“You really shouldn’t have done that.” Agent Phoenix looked at the Zoraxis operatives under them as they peered from the vantage point. “You really shouldn’t have done that.” They tried to hold back a laugh as they loaded the firearm in their hands, heavy and packed with explosives.
They know they will face a disciplinary hearing because of what they’re about to do, but what can the agency really do? Suspend their greatest agent? For what? Rescuing their handler? The one behind the scenes in order to support them? Really, would they have the guts? They doubt it.
They usually avoid violence but even they know that this trap will not be solved by mere words alone. Not when Zoraxis is involved. Never when Zoraxis is involved.
They held their earpiece that was still transmitting static, a reminder on who exactly is the person they’re looking for. Part of them believes that if anyone can escape unimpeded, he can. However, the second person makes the entire situation muddy.
Zor despised Roxana, stating there will be a far worse fate planned for her. Alas, they cared not for the past entanglements she had, only caring about what future they want to see. And that future? Currently threatened by Zoraxis.
A simple click and a sharp bang echoed an alarm that caused many to take flight in order to arm themselves, but it was far too late.
Reginald heard the alarms blaring on his way to Roxana’s location, internally hoping it was who he thought it was, only to push that thought down in order to focus on the small window of opportunity he’d been given.
The winding halls gave him a sense of deja vu, both from the screens he usually peers through and from the memories he occasionally misses. His footsteps matched the quickening heartbeats as he fired a gun he’d picked up on the way towards one of the operatives he’d marked as a target as soon as they’d locked eyes.
“Roxana.” He whispered, noticing her sluggish movements and groans, internally annoyed at the flashing red lights from the alarms and at the loud sirens that seemed to deafen his words. “Roxana Are you there? Can you hear me?”
“... Reginald?” His name barely left her lips when he put his hands on her shoulder to look at her closely, grip slightly tighter as soon as he passed through her injuries once.
A sharp sting jolted her awake, feeling threads stick at her skin as she can barely make out someone lifting her gently.
“Stay awake for me, please.” He whispered to her, secretly hoping that his practice of carrying Phoenix would help right now.
Agent Phoenix’s breaths were labored, hands barely able to hold onto the gun as they used their TK to toss back the grenades thrown at them, ears barely covered as the explosions drowned out the shouts.
They need to buy a little bit more time, for their family’s sake.
Only for their thoughts to pause and shift upon the sight they caught a glimpse of. Their blood ran cold, only for a burning anger to take hold seconds later.
Their eyes glazed over with indifference as soon as they counted the number of bullets they had before leaving the vantage point.
There is no longer any more time for broad impersonal explosions that kill indiscriminately.
