Work Text:
Alhaitham lay in bed, surrounded by the soft glow of moonlight filtering through his curtains. His roommate, Kaveh, had been tirelessly working on his architect project all night. The rhythmic tapping and scratching sounds echoed through the walls, even with Alhaitham wearing earmuffs in a futile attempt to drown out the noise.
Regret gnawed at Alhaitham as he reflected on his decision to let Kaveh stay until his debts were paid. The walls weren't supposed to be this thin, yet every detail of Kaveh's labor echoed into his room, disrupting any hope of a peaceful night's sleep.
As the night wore on, frustration mounted within Alhaitham. He tossed and turned, questioning why fate had chosen this relentless soundtrack for his night. "Why is it not even morning yet?" he mumbled, checking the clock.
Finally, a sudden silence descended. Alhaitham's wearied eyes closed in anticipation of some much-needed rest. But as dawn broke, he realized it was already morning. "What the..." he exclaimed, caught between the relief of silence and the shock of daylight.
Kaveh emerged from his room, seemingly oblivious to the chaos he had created. Alhaitham, exhausted and exasperated, couldn't help but wonder if a night of peace would ever be within reach with his dedicated, noisy roommate.
Alhaitham groggily stumbled into the kitchen, his bleary eyes barely open. The relentless night spent tossing and turning due to Kaveh's architectural endeavors had taken its toll. A sense of weariness hung over him like a heavy cloak as he fumbled with the coffee maker, desperately seeking the lifeline of caffeine to jolt him awake.
Three mugs of dark, strong coffee later, Alhaitham's hands shook slightly, and his eyes were wide open, fueled by the rush of caffeine coursing through his veins. He felt a temporary surge of energy, just enough to propel him towards the Akademiya where his duties as a scribe awaited.
As Alhaitham entered the bustling halls of the Akademiya, he clutched his fourth coffee, the aroma of which mingled with the countless scholarly tomes lining the shelves. Despite the initial burst of alertness, fatigue began to reclaim its territory. Alhaitham fought to stay focused, the potent brew doing little to stave off the inevitable descent into drowsiness.
His desk at the Akademiya beckoned, covered with scrolls and quills awaiting his meticulous attention. Alhaitham tried to concentrate, but the exhaustion was overwhelming. The lines of text blurred, and the once-steady hand now faltered.
In the midst of this struggle, Alhaitham's eyes grew heavy, and the warmth of the coffee became a distant memory. Unbeknownst to him, his head slowly descended, finding solace on the pile of parchments before him. The scholars nearby, engrossed in their own studies, gradually noticed the unusual stillness at Alhaitham's desk.
A hushed whisper swept through the Akademiya as scholars turned their gaze toward the scribe, now peacefully slumbering amidst his work. A mixture of disbelief and amusement danced across their faces as they witnessed the usually diligent Alhaitham succumb to exhaustion.
"Is that Alhaitham? The dedicated scribe?" one scholar whispered incredulously.
"He must have had a long night," another chimed in, eyebrows raised in surprise.
As word spread, curious onlookers gathered around Alhaitham's desk, marveling at the sight of a scholar renowned for his meticulousness now caught in the clutches of sleep. Chuckles and sympathetic nods rippled through the crowd, creating a momentary diversion from the scholarly pursuits that typically consumed the Akademiya.
The scribe's unexpected siesta became the talk of the Akademiya that day, leaving scholars both amused and astonished at the sight of Alhaitham, who had valiantly attempted to battle fatigue with an army of coffee mugs, ultimately succumbing to the irresistible call of sleep.
Nilou stepped out of the Zubayr Theater, taking a break from her duties as a performer. The vibrant atmosphere of Sumeru City surrounded her, but her thoughts were occupied with the whereabouts of her friends, especially the mysterious traveler she had met not long ago.
As she strolled through the bustling streets, Nilou's keen eyes scanned the crowd for familiar faces. Spotting a gathering at a nearby tea stall, she approached, eager to catch up with her friends. The laughter and animated chatter welcomed her as she joined the group.
"Nilou! It's been ages since we've seen you," exclaimed Dehya, one of her close friends and fellow performers at the Zubayr Theater.
Nilou grinned, "I've been busy with rehearsals, but I couldn't resist taking a break to catch up with all of you. How's everyone doing?"
The lively exchange of stories and updates continued, but Nilou couldn't shake the curiosity about the traveler's whereabouts. With a thoughtful expression, she turned to Dehya, hoping for any information.
"Have you heard from the traveler recently? I was hoping to say hi and see if they're still around in Sumeru," Nilou inquired, her eyes reflecting a mix of anticipation and concern.
Dehya's expression shifted, and she hesitated before responding, "Oh, about that... I heard they and Paimon left for Fontaine not too long ago. Seems like they're on a new adventure."
A frown crept onto Nilou's face, a mixture of disappointment and a tinge of longing. The transient nature of the traveler's journey weighed on her, knowing that they could be gone in an instant.
"Fontaine, huh?" Nilou muttered, her gaze distant as if trying to grasp the reality of their departure. Nevertheless, she maintained a cheerful facade, not wanting to burden her friends with her feelings.
As the break continued, Nilou excused herself with a smile, deciding to return to her home. The bustling streets of Sumeru City echoed with the hum of activity as she navigated her way back to her cozy residence.
Once inside, Nilou's determination to spread joy overcame her melancholy. She began preparing a basket filled with an array of delightful sweets – carefully crafted cookies, candies, and treats that reflected her passion for confectionery. Each bag was adorned with a name tag, meticulously handwritten for every friend she cherished.
The fragrant aroma of baked goods filled her home as she worked diligently to ensure each treat was perfect. Nilou couldn't shake off the feeling that sharing a bit of sweetness would somehow bridge the gap left by the traveler's departure.
With the basket in hand, Nilou made her way back to the Zubayr Theater, her heart lightened by the thought of surprising her friends with these personalized gifts. The small bags of joy were a tangible expression of her affection, a sweet reminder that even as the traveler ventured into distant lands, the bonds of friendship remained steadfast.
Nilou distributed the last of the sweet bags to her friends, leaving only one remaining – the special one for Alhaitham. As she pondered how to approach him, a determination settled within her to make this moment memorable. She decided to personally deliver the bag to him, hoping to brighten his day.
With the sun casting long shadows in Sumeru City, Nilou walked back towards the Akademiya. The familiar streets seemed quieter now, the energy of the city changing as the day progressed. The Akademiya loomed ahead, and Nilou asked for directions to Alhaitham's office.
Following the given directions, she arrived at the door of his office. A gentle knock echoed, but there was no response. Concern furrowed her brow as she gently pushed the door open. The sight that met her eyes was unexpected – Alhaitham, fast asleep at his desk, surrounded by scrolls and quills.
Nilou stood there for a moment, a mix of surprise and amusement playing on her features. As she gazed at the peaceful expression on Alhaitham's face, a soft smile formed. Unintentionally, her eyes lingered a bit longer, and a blush tinted her cheeks.
Shaking her head as if to dispel any intimate thoughts, Nilou quietly tiptoed towards Alhaitham's desk. The basket of sweets in her hand held a bag with his name tag in green ink, a little hand-drawn book next to it. She carefully placed it on the desk, not wanting to disturb his slumber.
A sense of warmth filled her as she observed him sleeping. The soft glow of sunlight filtering through the window added a serene ambiance to the room. Nilou took a moment to appreciate the tranquility before quietly leaving the office, closing the door behind her.
Returning to the Zubayr Theater, Nilou resumed her work with a newfound lightness in her step. The anticipation of Alhaitham discovering the surprise left her with a delightful buzz. As she focused on her performance, thoughts of the sweet gesture she had left behind lingered in her mind.
Meanwhile, Alhaitham stirred, slowly waking from his unintended nap. Groggily, he rubbed his eyes, his thoughts immediately shifting to his frustration with Kaveh's late-night activities. The memory of the relentless noise weighed on him as he sat up, determined to get back to work.
However, his attention was diverted when he noticed the bag of sweets on his desk. Picking it up, he saw his name tag and, upon closer inspection, read the small note – "from Nilou." Alhaitham's face turned several shades redder as realization dawned on him.
He knew there was a connection between him and Nilou, a mutual affection that lingered in the air whenever they interacted. Trying to play it cool, he shook his head, putting the bag down with a measured nonchalance.
Resolute in his decision to focus on work, Alhaitham reached for a cookie from the bag. As he took a bite, a pleasant surprise danced on his taste buds, and a shy smile escaped his lips. The sweetness of the moment lingered, both in the cookie and the subtle connection he shared with Nilou. As he delved back into his work, Alhaitham couldn't help but savor the unexpected joy that had brightened his day.
