Hajime and Peko: Snow Day

Notes:

Work Text:

As Peko Pekoyama usually did, she awoke bright and early. As she left her bed, she couldn’t help but feel something was off. It felt a lot colder not to mention there was a layer of frost on her window. As she opened her door, Hajime was standing there, wearing a big puffy coat and hat.

“Hinata did something happen on Jabberwock?”

“Yeah it just started snowing last night. The island is covered in a thick layer of snow,” he said as he entered.

“That seems a little odd…”

“It is definitely strange to say the least, but I think we should at least have some fun with it before it all melts. After all this might be the only opportunity we get on the island.”

“Well what should we do for fun then?”

“We could build a snowman!”

“Snow...man?” Peko raised an eyebrow

“You’ve never built a snowman before!?”

“Not really, I haven’t had much experience with snow. Whenever it snowed, I was usually…too busy to be going and playing. I think Class 77 once had a snow day, however I chose to pass.”

“Ah well now I gotta show you everything the snow has to offer!”

“Oh, s-sure Hinata,” replied Peko, it was rare to see Hajime this enthusiastic.

“First we need to get you some proper snow attire. Honestly I think you might be fine with what you regularly wear. Although you could maybe use a scarf around your neck, and some mittens would also be good. Here you can borrow mine.”

“A-are you sure?”

“Yeah, I made sure to bring an extra pair or two with me.”

“T-thank you Hinata.”

After Peko finished putting on the gear, the pair exited her cabin, Peko couldn’t help but be amazed. Everywhere was blanketed by a layer of snow, it was…majestic to take in.

“S-so what should we do now?”

“Oh what can’t we do! That’s the easier answer! We could build a snowman, go sledding or skiing, we can make snow angels-” And Hajime just kept going on, Peko was beginning to feel overwhelmed, she hadn’t realized how versatile snow truly was. Eventually, he came to a decision, “Ooh how about we go Ice Skating!”

“Ice skating?”

“Yeah, you pretty much just glide across the ice to your heart’s content, it’s a blast!”

“Well what do we need to do it?”

“A special kind of shoes, but there’s probably some shoes for that in the storage room.”

“Are you certain?”

“There should be some in there, after all, this is where I got the winter gear from.”

And as Hajime had figured, there were a few pairs sitting in a box labeled “Winter stuff”.

As they made their way to the ice, Peko examined the boots she was carrying

“Blades on the shoes, how peculiar…”

“Yeah they’re there to help give you better traction on the ice.”

Eventually they arrived at the frozen body of water, the pool outside the hotel.

“It’s a bit tricky at first, but you’ll get the hang of it. It’s sort of like rollerblading.”

“I’ve never done that either.”

“Oh. Well I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it.”

Peko put on the shoes and walked onto the ice. She quickly found herself gliding along the ice and for a moment, she felt like she knew what she was doing…only to then find herself slipping and landing on her rear end.

“I thought we were in winter, not fall,” snickered Hiyoko as she walked past.

“How about I help you for a bit,” smiled Hajime as he made his way towards her. He took Peko’s hand, causing her to blush. With help from Hajime, Peko found herself having an easier time making way around the ice. However, she soon felt herself slipping again. But this time, instead of the ice, she found herself landing on Hajime’s chest.

“Gotcha. You ok?”

“Y-yes,” replied Peko, her face turning an even brighter shade of red.

“Perhaps we should take a break from ice skating for now, there's a lot more we can do.”

“Y-yes, I think that would be a good decision,” replied Peko, still beet red, “How about we do that snow man thing you mentioned.”

“Oh yeah, building a snowman, that’ll be lots of fun!”

The duo made their way to a nice open stretch of land that was absolutely covered.

“Welp, here's our building material Peko, let’s get to work!” Hajime then began rolling the snow into a large ball. Once it was about half the size of him, Hajime stopped. “Here’s our base, we need two more smaller balls for the body and head. Peko, would you like to make the body?”

“Sure, I shall try my best.” It took Peko a bit to get the hang of it, but soon she had rolled out a second snowball and placed it on top of the first.

“Great, and here’s the head,” Hajime grunted as he lifted the snowball. “We just need to put it on top.”

With fairly little effort, Peko lifted the snowball onto the other ones and their snowman was complete.

“All he needs now is a nose,” said Hajime, as he pulled out a carrot. “Peko you want to put it on?”

“S-sure.” As she went to stick the nose on, the head fell off. “H-Hinata, I’m so sorry!”

“It’s ok Peko, it’s ok. I probably should’ve made a sturdier base, plus we can always rebuild him if we want-” A snowball whacked him in the back of the head, sending him plummeting face first into the snow before he could finish.

“Ha, ha! Got you Hajime!” The culprit was Kazuichi Soda. “Gotta be more on your guard bro.”

He continued to have a good laugh, until he saw the death glare that Peko was giving him. “H-hey now, it was just a friendly s-snowball to the face. H-how about I let Hajime get a free hit when he gets back up-”

Hajime wasn’t sure exactly what happened, since he was still face deep in the snow, but when did get back on his feet, Kazuichi was gone and there was now a big pile of snow where he once was.

“Ah that’s a shame, I was interested in showing you what a snowball fight was like. Oh well, I’m sure there’s next time.”

“Yes…next time,” replied Peko. She then blushed. “Hinata, I think I’d like to give ice skating another try, i-if that’s fine with you.”

“Certainly,” smiled Hajime.

The two arrived back at the frozen water.

“After you,” smiled Hajime.

The two began to skate, and soon enough, Peko had the hang of it! They skated for hours, with Hajime even showing her a few nifty tricks like the figure eight. The ice skating didn’t stop until the sun had gone down. Both of them were freezing, but they both could agree that they had a lot of fun.

—--

After a long day of being out in the snow, the two decided to spend that evening together in front of the fireplace. Hajime had stopped by the kitchen on the way back and was now making the two of them some hot chocolate as well.

As he brought their drinks, he cuddled up under the blanket next to Peko.

“So what did you enjoy most about your first snow day,” he asked.

As she cuddled up closer to him, Hajime realized that he didn’t need to hear her answer to know that this was her favorite part of the day.
