Work Text:
She finds her there with a little stool, her tome, and three dozen pumpkins and counting.
“I never knew you as someone to favor any holiday” Kara says quietly, trying to not disturbed whatever Lena was doing.
Her friend looks up, her back popping from how hunched over she was, Kara winces in sympathy on her behalf. Humans were not made for their anatomy at all.
“Hey you. What are you doing here, shouldn’t you be at the party?” Lena asks, wiping off pumpkin goop on her jeans.
Kara sits on the grass close leaning against Lena’s thigh, “I could say the same to you”
She runs the back of her knuckles along the jean’s seams. In front of her was a half-carved pumpkin, with a happy smile and round eyes laughs back at her.
“This little guy is cute” Kara says, Lena hums quietly, “Thank you”
But again, Lena doesn’t offer more, so Kara settles deeper into the ground, curling an arm around her younger friend’s leg.
One after the other she watches Lena work, stripping away layer after orange layer like a surgeon would tissue. Pumpkin after pumpkin Lena works, it’s methodical and intricate, and the beaty of the art to add on top is just amazing.
Kara yawns blinking back when Lena hands her a couple of tools, “If you’re going to stay you might as well partake—and no heat vision” Lena gave her a look.
It wouldn’t be the first time her heat vision was seen as cheating.
And as time dissipates into nothingness, the sky changing colors and darkening, Kara enjoys her time with Lena in the silence, the cool air bringing some pink to Lena’s nose and cheeks distracting Kara more than once leaving to a few times where if she were human, they’d have to go to the hospital to reattach fingers.
She’s on her 7th pumpkin and Lena on who knows which one when Kara can’t help but ask again.
“Why aren’t you at the party”
The heavy sigh that follows sounds as if Lena was a tire losing air more than anything else, the noise seemingly endless and just as worry some.
“Kara…” Lena trails off, tools halted midway through slicing a nose in the current model.
Kara looks up and turns to face her friend when she feels a tear fall onto her cheek. One that is not her own.
A broken red face and glittering eyes look down upon her.
“Oh, Lena” Kara says as she pulls the woman off her stool and into her lap, she feel more dampness around her collar as Lena tucks her head under Kara’s chin.
Kara coos as Lena cries, rocking the two of them and let’s Lena release whatever is pent up inside of her.
Theres a shift, as Lena makes herself smaller, her head presses into Kara’s chest.
“It’s silly” was muffled against her.
“Lena” Kara chides lightly, cupping the woman’s face, “You can talk to me, whether it’s important or silly”
Kara wipes the tears with her thumb, the ache in her heart deepens when Lena whimpers, somehow looking even smaller than she already does.
“I hate seeing people dress up as my brother” Lena whispers.
Kara’s brow furrows, “I’m sorry, we’re they at the party?”
Lena shakes her head, “I don’t know, I never made it past the gate. I saw several on the way over and I just—couldn’t”
Kara feels a nose brush against the crook of her neck. “I know it’s stupid and ultimately inconsequential, but it just—I don’t know, makes me hurt, mad, uncomfortable? I really don’t know”
The super leans back a bit to look her friend in the eyes, “So you isolated yourself in your home garden, the one in Ireland which you miraculously forgot to tell anyone you had”
It makes Lena smile a small smile, “Sorry. It was supposed to be a surprise”
And it’s the best thing in the world when a smile is on her friend’s face again.
Kara pulls Lena closer and kisses the tear tracks away on either side and ending on Lena’s bare lips, “You do know how to pull the rug out from someone”
Lena freezes. A look of surprise on her face.
And Kara frowns before freezing herself when she realized what she’s done.
“I—yeah” Kara cleared her throat, “So, um, yeah. I could always fly you to the party if you’d like, or if you don’t want to go that’s cool. We could have another later, after this one. I mean at the next game night. Or well, I see you have your portal watch you could always take, but I still don’t know if you want to go and hang with the rest of the fam and their friends. We could get pancakes or something if that doesn’t sound nice or…please say something so I won’t keep rambling” she finishes.
Kara bites her lips, her fingers shake and sweat and she doesn’t know where to put them now, and Rao Ireland was surprisingly warm at night.
“I don’t think the party is for me tonight” Lena says.
Kara tries to gulp down the emotion that’s stuck in her throat, what if she made things worse. What if Lena doesn’t want to talk to her again? Why did she do that in the first place, sure Lena was attractive, very much so but Lena wouldn’t be into her like that right?
“But, maybe we could invite the rest here. The pumpkins should last a couple days even without the magic I was going to try and put in them”
The Kryptonian releases a sharp sigh, okay Lena isn’t freaking out that’s good. That’s great! Crap did she ask something?
“Kara?”
“Yes?” She forces a smile.
“Does that sound good? You, me, and the rest to have a housewarming game night with a Halloween theme? I have plenty of pumpkins we can still carve”
Kara nods absently, hands playing with each other.
Rao, Lena really looks good in moonlight. Wait, no more pressing things needed to be taken care of, like Lena feeling conflicting emotions about people dressing up as her brother.
“Kara” Lena says, leaning back and arm wiping at her eyes and the fleeing tears, “You’ve been staring at me for like five minutes…are you going to go back to Alex’s Halloween party?”
“Oh, right. Yes”
Lena raises a brow before standing up and whipping off the hay from her legs.
Kara vaguely hears the sound of a portal opening before a finger pokes her in the nose making her blink. There’s a hand in front of her face, palm up and inviting.
Gently she holds onto the hand as it pulls her up.
“Give Alex and Kelly my regards” Lena says voice soft.
Kara nods, feels her shoulders relaxing as she looks at their entwined hands, “Yeah, sure” she leans in and stops. Kara watches as Lena looks her over, her eyes trailing from her eyes to her lips.
“Happy Halloween darling” Lena whispers, pulling Kara lower, her own lips grazing against her lips lightly before pressing forward, kissing her.
Kara’s eyes close as she deepens the kiss, a small hand cupping her cheek, pulling her farther down.
But just as quickly as it started it was over.
A familiar sound filled the area as light deepened the shadows. Kara looks at the portal and then at Lena and back again.
“You can always come by later” Lena says, pulling her cheek to her for a brisk kiss. “Enjoy yourself”
Lena doesn’t give her an option to stay as she gently urges Kara forward with a nudge.
Kara looks back a hand up in a wave of goodbye, too distracted by the woman to see one of the pumpkins and trips, falling through the portal.
Alex clinks her glass against her wife’s as the last remaining stragglers go home. It was a fun party, she’d gotten to see some old friends, and Eliza was in town for a couple of days to see her and her family. It was perfect.
The telltale sound of familiar whirling fills the air before bright blue and red shoot past. Kara faceplants into a lamp table, breaking the thrift find over her head.
Alex looks at the clock, the blurry numbers showing it was half past two in the morning. She pinches the bridge of her nose and thanks the stars her mother took Esme this evening.
“Alex” a familiar warble calls to her.
The former director pours another glass, handing it to Kelly who takes it with a laugh at the sisters, before taking the bottle for herself and starts drinking straight from it. She sighs heavily as Kara starts spouting on and on about pumpkins and Ireland, and quite frankly a thousand other things her alcohol and sleep deprived brain can’t parse out at the moment.
“Oh Rao, Alex you should have seen just how well her carving skills were. And I wish she could have been there; Ireland is really pretty and Lena’s new home—”
Alex blinks heavily looking at her sister, she’s happy she’s happy but, “Wait why do you have hay all over you?”
Kara throws her hands up in the air, stomping over and raiding the food bowls, talking and inhaling the chips at the same time.
“Alex, you weren’t listening! So like I was saying—”
Alex groaned, head falling over the back of the couch. She should have kept her mouth shut.
