Work Text:
Tossing her ring off Wickery Bridge she hears a familiar voice echo, “Aren't you pathetic.”
This remark startles Elena. She wants to say it's because it feels real, but it all feels real. All of it has. Every terrible thing the curse has been whispering into her ear feels so raw and real, but this is different.
Not laced with affection… But nor is it with the malice and antagonism she has been facing the past few days. She's losing it… Never in a million years would she hope that this is really Katherine before her. But she does. She hopes with everything left in her that this is her doppelganger.
“I never thought I'd say this… but I'm so glad it's you…” Elena quietly whispers as her eyes well up with tears.
Katherine rolls her eyes and scoffs, “Don't you ever stop crying?”
This pricks Elena’s heart, it really shouldn't. She's heard this the second time today, it should mean less, especially coming from Katherine.
Watching Katherine’s head tilting with slightly furrowed brows, Elena focuses on Katherine in fear of hearing the curse, which makes her want to give up on everything including herself, again. Losing herself, she believes, is the worst thing that could happen.
Looking into this mirror, she doesn't feel as lost. Elena sees her reflection in Katherine's eyes. She spots their differences. It grounds her, saves her from the onslaught of constant change and confusion.
The whispering, shouting, demanding voices subside and fade into the background. The torture is gone… Over…
But the sun begins to rise and Elena's hands start burning, leaving sharp pain.
“You… You have everything I want… How dare you die so fucking pathetically…” Katherine hisses before speeding over to jump off Wickery bridge with Elena in her arms, saving her.
