Chapter 1: Interlude

Chapter Text

It was a normal day, Jungkook got up, waited for his lovely roommate, Hyun to wake up so he could annoy him and they could cook together.

A grumbled "Happy birthday" was heard when Hyun came to be

Then Jungkook realized, "Oh, It's my birthday."

There was no rapid fire voice going off in his head, or headache like the ground was shaking, so he was happy.

Until 14:27 (2:27)

At the specific time, he was struck with the worst headache he felt could ever be experienced, A headache he was sure outdid the one Seokmin and Mingyu suffered through on their birthday.

"Does getting soulmates have to be this painful? He thought, and in the middle of class he had to suffer too.

He tried to take the brunt of the pain, until his head started to sizzle and tingle so much, so he'd packed up this things and asked too be excused by his professor, he didn't even like taking English anyways, but his friends all said they would, and whoever dropped out first had to pay every time they went out for a year straight, and Jungkook sure as hell wasn't going to be the one.

He stumbled back to his dorm, feeling like his head was going to come loose and roll down the street, and was greeted by Hyun, who was eating something he'd never seen before. He walked over, dumping his body on top of the taller boy's and begun complaining "My head hurts so baddd" he mumbled

"What's that got to do with me?" was the response he got

"You have absolutely no empathy, I hope your head actually falls off when this happens to you." Jungkook then began to leave, wanting to sleep off the headache. He didn't even really want soulmates like that either, sharing his head? crazy.

"It'll happen to you first~" Hyun taunted, so Jungkook walked back to where he was sat, and took a huge bite out of whatever he was eating "This is good" he hummed, walking away. He was happy that it was good, because if it had tasted horrible he would've murdered his roommate then and there, just because he could.

Jungkook continued to suffer as his head pounded while he tried to go to sleep, but eventually, after trying more breathing techniques than he thought possible, some of which he probably invented, he fell asleep.

He later woke up annoyed for a completely separate reason, very loud and talkative voices.

"HYUN! WHOEVER YOU'RE TALKING TO, TELL THEM TO SHUT UP."

Then there was silence, and the mentioned person entered the room

"The fuck are you on?" Hyun questioned

"You and your guests are too noisy" Jungkook groaned, flipping over

"Excuse you, tyrant. We're the only people in this place right now." Hyun stalked over and with calculated motions grasped the exposed skin above the older boy's sweatpants with his nails and twisted it, resulting in a loud shriek and Jungkook throwing whatever he could find at the younger boy while throwing out heinous amounts of insults.

There was a loud cackle he heard through his closed door before silence returned.

"Um," He heard an unfamiliar voice "are you alright?"

He shot up "Who's there?"

"It's your birthday, We're your soulmates. Happy Birthday by the way." and a chorus of Happy Birthdays followed

"Oh." Jungkook deadpanned "I'm going back to sleep, goodnight." He stopped a laugh, and laid back down, tuning out the panicked voices in a manner he had honed from listening to his friends rant about petty issues with their soulmates and just rant about petty things in general.

The next morning his head was silent, to his thanks. His head throbbed a bit, but not bad at all, and he got ready for the day, waking Hyun who's body clock isn't used to waking for morning classes. They made a simple breakfast, small pancakes and eggs, then, left for the day. Eventually, the throb in the back of his head dulled, it all was great, until about halfway through his night class, groggy voices were heard, like they were just waking up.

"No way my soulmates live in an entirely different country" he groaned, it's not like he really wanted to be with them, but knowing he'll likely never meet them randomly was disappointing.

"Where might they be from?" he mumbled, maybe a bit too loudly as his teacher responded

"Jeon! I'm aware of recent changes, and maybe you're not prepared but please refrain from speaking, especially during a test. points off."

"Sorry Mrs. Cha!" he rushed out, now he has to explain himself after class.

The rest of the class went by quickly, although Jungkook's mind was filled with voices of busy-bodies, who seemed to be going to work. He stayed silent, not wanting to alert them as what he said before went unnoticed in their morning haze.

As his peers filed out the space, he took his time packing up, then approached his professor.

"Professor Cha, can we talk about.. before?" he questioned quietly, hoping his voice wouldn't transfer into his soulmates thoughts, but it seems they did, no matter how quiet he was because they suddenly went near silent.

"About you speaking during the quiz?" she responded

"Yes, I was just surprised after suddenly hearing noise, because it was quiet before, I hope that's fine, but if not, I'll accept points off." he spoke

"Just this once, I'll let you off the hook. Invest in Blocking patches before you get too comfy if you want to, and you should start using alternative methods of communication for more privacy if you don't want to use patches" She explained hastily, "Now, off you pop."

He left the classroom highly embarrassed as he was attacked with a barrage of apologies, which he waved off, because he was told off by his teacher, and because his soulmates heard the whole exchange, or at least what he said.

He didn't want to overuse blocking patches as the health affects are severe if you do, but he did not pay attention in his communications classes, and he now regrets it entirely. No time to dwell on the past, and there's no better time than the present, so he goes to practice sign language in his dorm.

Which fails horribly.

Jungkook decides he'll use the alphabet he studied so hard all those years ago instead. "Thanks baby Gguk, he mutters, sprawled on his bed starfish style after throwing himself back.

At this time, Hyun walks in, a fluffy blanket which Jungkook realizes was now missing from the other's bed draped on his body. "School's cancelled tomorrow. Wanna go out?" he asks

"Like, now?" The older raises an eyebrow.

"Obviously."

"Mkay, Lets go." He hops off his bed, leaving the room to put on shoes as Hyun puts on sweatpants. Then, when they both have on warm clothes, they set off to..

"Where are we going?" Jungkook questioned "

Wherever the night takes us."

"Okay free spirit."

They walked in silence. No music, no devices. Just taking in their surroundings, something not a lot of people have the opportunity to do on a daily basis. it was nice. they walked past parks, big fields, quiet neighborhoods, and happy friend groups.

There was the buzz of music in his head, Jungkook sang along. a mutual favorite song of theirs by Bullet Boys, Hyun joined him. They came to a bench that outlooked the river and sat there.

"Are you feeling sentimental?" Hyun asked

"Nah."

"Me neither."

They laughed, stayed for a while, then decided they should head back.
