Chapter Text
Izuku and Katsuki had just been in a relationship for a couple months when Izuku had decided to go on his vigilante era, leaving behind just a few letters, among those, a breakup letter for him.
“…I will not stop right now, and I will not let anyone hold me back. How things are now, I think we should go different ways. I’m sorry, and I love you, Kacchan. But this means we are no longer together. I’m really sorry”
That letter had said everything he needed to know, and still, he went to look for him and even apologized in front of everyone. In his books, he had humiliated himself enough, but it was only fair after what he made Izuku go through. That still didn’t mean they were back together.
Izuku had broken up with him, and that was final. Maybe Izuku had assumed he wouldn’t accept it, and it had never happened, but it did, and he did not take it lightly. It was a long time before they had officially said they were together, so a breakup was pretty hard, but unignorable.
When they were looking for Izuku and had updates on him, he had even corrected them when they called him his boyfriend, saying, in Izuku’s words, that they were no longer together. They were shocked, but didn’t ask for details, it was for the best.
Ever since, Katsuki has put some distance between them, back to being friends.
.
Izuku was destroyed.
As soon as he returned to UA, things seemed normal, Kacchan had gone to look for him and had carried him back when he fainted, as he saw it, things were going to get back to normal, but they didn’t.
The first night after he was back, he went to bed just after showering, the stress catching up to him and having him fall asleep in a matter of seconds. He couldn’t notice then, but Kacchan did not even offer to go sleep beside him.
The next day was much more obvious though. Izuku had asked him to train together, and while they were training, they didn’t talk much, Izuku just assumed they were very focused on the training, because of the upcoming war, but Kacchan usually didn’t reject his kisses between hits, now he did.
He set his mind to thinking Kacchan was mad about his whole stunt, so after practice, he went to his room to formally apologize for his actions and what he caused to everyone, but even after the apology, Katsuki had just said that it was fine and not fucking do it again, and then closed the door in his face.
He wanted to cuddle, but that was a hard no.
He didn’t know what else to do. So, he went to look for All might.
“Yeah…I did go and apologize to him specifically, but he didn’t budge, he even closed the door in my face, why would he do that?”
“Hm…seems weird, he hadn’t done that in a while”
“Yeah! Do you think he is still mad at what happened?”
“That seems like the most reasonable answer. Maybe he is still a bit embarrassed about apologizing and going on first name basis”
“Should I call him by his whole name too? I mean Kacchan is also his name, but maybe it’s a bit awkward now that he calls me by my whole name, I should call him by his proper name too!”
“Yeah! Sounds about right, now you will be on equal footing. That should make things easier”
Needless to say, that just made things worse.
.
The first time he called him Katsuki, class was just about to start, and he had said it to try and get his attention, but as soon as he did, Katsuki had looked really hurt, like the look he gave him when he had first told him about one for all. He was shocked to see that face.
“Yeah? What do you want, nerd?”
He didn’t know what to say now.
“Um…I said it’s nice to be back, Kac- Katsuki!”
He didn’t make that face again, so maybe he was just getting used to having Izuku back. He did just turn around on him though. Izuku was lost again.
After class, they all had training, so everyone was there when they were both training.
It did look a bit awkward.
When they were in combat, they didn’t talk at all, Izuku talked and Katsuki just told him to be silent, and when Katsuki was the one talking first, it was just to say he was too slow or was not focused.
Even during their break, when Izuku had gone to sit beside him, Katsuki had stood up and gone to the bathroom. Everyone gave him a pity look that he couldn’t decipher. Why were they all behaving so weird?
“Uraraka, are you guys, okay? You’re acting weird…”
“No- I mean, I don’t think so, it’s just that maybe you and Bakugou are bit tense…”
She didn’t want to say that he looked a bit pitiful acting like normal with the guy that broke up with him, or that’s what they thought.
“Kacchan’s been acting weird…I don’t know what to do…I mean Katsuki!”
She patted his shoulder and gave him another pitiful look, he sighed
“Why are you guys looking at me with pity? I don’t get it. Weren’t you the ones to try to bring me back?”
She was startled by that
“No, no, no! It’s not about that! I mean we were just sad for your breakup, it had nothing to do with bringing you back!” She covered her mouth immediately, she didn’t mean to mention it “I’m sorry, I know it’s still a sore subject, we just didn’t mean it like that…” She was looking somewhere else to try to avoid awkwardness, but when she returned to loot at him, he seemed more surprised than her.
“Wait, what do you mean breakup? But I thought-” Katsuki’s behavior came to his mind and he realized he had been the one in the wrong the whole time
“What? Bakugo said you guys were no longer together…We all thought he broke up with you” They both looked at each other with confusion
“No, I mean- Kind of. I broke up with him, but I thought he refused it, and we never really broke up. Wait, does that mean we really aren’t together?” He seemed to just realize the implication of the word breakup, and his eyes filled with tears. “Me and Kacchan, we aren’t…”
He started crying in the middle of their training, making everyone look at him. He couldn’t care less, but Uraraka took him aside.
“Hey, it’s okay, alright? You guys are still friends! Maybe you can-”
“I’m the worst boyfriend! I don’t even deserve to be called his boyfriend ever again… I didn’t even break up with him in person, and then I go and behave like an asshole, treating him like nothing!”
Katsuki’s sad face came to his mind, and he cried even harder.
“But you can still talk to him about it…everything will be fine, alright? I’m sure he still loves you, he was the first one to go talk with the principal to get you back, so it’s not like he will just forget your past together!”
Izuku tried to calm himself down, thinking about her words.
“Yeah… you’re right…I will be brave for once and talk to him about it!”
“Yeah!”
She patted his back again as a sign to go for it, but as soon as they were back, he noticed Katsuki had already ditched him and was now training with Kirishima. He was going to go back to his crying corner, but Uraraka held him there and told him to train with her until Katsuki was free again.
Training with her helped him calm down, and when it was time to go back to the dorms, he was ready to talk to Katsuki. What he wasn’t ready for was how Katsuki avoided him like the plague.
When he got even remotely close, Katsuki was already a mile away, when they were showering, he refused to engage with him and even ignored him on the way out. Izuku didn’t want to give up.
“Wait, Kacchan!” The blonde didn’t stop until they were at his door. “Kacchan! Please…”
For the first time after training, he looked him in the eye
“It’s Katsuki” He got into his room and closed the door
Izuku was left speechless, he had gone back to calling him Kacchan, but Katsuki did not forget how he had used his name before.
He was screwed. Now how did he even try to get him back when he had fucked up so many times in that short time?
He decided to leave him alone for the time being. It was better to cool his head first, before hurting him even more.
-
He spent the whole night researching ways to get another chance with your boy, so he went to class very optimistic, tired, but with a plan in mind.
He had asked Uraraka to meet him before class started to check if his plan would go well, he explained his reasoning for every step, and she gave him the best advice she could, trying to think like Bakugo, like she had put it. Unfortunately, they lost track of time, and ended up arriving after the bell rang. That had already ruined the first step of his plan.
Aizawa was already there to give them some instructions, because after the way they had just been having some rescue instructions and battle training, still, arriving late was a no.
They had the walk of shame to their desks, but Katsuki didn’t even look at him, not even glanced. He wanted to give him some compliments before class, but now he had to just sit down and wait.
-
His plan was absolutely not working. Even when he managed to get Katsuki to train with him, all his words were ignored. Katsuki even looked hurt at his compliments. He looked at Uraraka for help, but she was also clueless.
After training, and they were heading to the showers, he grabbed Katsuki, and even when he protested, he took him to a private place.
“Kacchan, can we please talk?”
“Katsuki…” Izuku knew what he meant, but he refused to comply.
“No, Kacchan, it was a mistake to have ever called you that, I didn’t mean for it to sound like I was pulling away from you, I thought that’s what you might want, but I realize it’s not. I’m really sorry, Kacchan, I’ve just been-”
“What I might want? You gotta be kidding me. I didn’t think you’d move on so fast”
He was shocked.
“Kacchan…It’s not what you think…I have not moved on not even one bit, I’ve been confused all this time, I thought we didn’t even break up” That seemed like a very bad choice of words, because Katsuki was furious
“What?! You were the one to break up with me! You gave me a fucking letter, Izuku! I almost gave my life for you, and all you could give me was a fucking wet letter basically saying I was going to hold you back, so we should break up, and now you getting amnesia or something? Don’t try to make a fool of me” He tried to leave, but Izuku grabbed him
“I’m not, Kacchan! Everything just seemed so normal at first, I thought you refused to break up with me, but about the other thing, I regret every letter I wrote on that damn piece of paper. I was not in the right state of mind and just looked for the best way to make everyone leave me alone”
“Well, you fucking succeeded, now you are alone, you and I are no more” He got out of Izukus grasp, but stopped when he saw the tears in his eyes, he had some in his eyes too, but he still couldn’t bare to see Izuku cry.
“wait…please, Kacchan…” he didn’t know what to say, but he didn’t want Katsuki to leave.
Katsuki didn’t move
“I know we are not together anymore, but would you… consider giving me another chance? I already promised you I would not leave again, but now let me promise you I will never let you down again…” He went to grab Katsuki’s hand and was actually allowed to.
“I…I can’t forgive you so fast…I don’t take it lightly…a breakup is a big deal for me, you are not my boyfriend anymore, you wanted that” He knew those words hurt, the both of them, but they had to be said.
Izuku squeezed his hand as he closed his eyes and tried not to cry anymore.
“I know I don’t deserve a second chance just like that, but I love you, Kacchan, I can’t bare to live in a world where I don’t get to be by your side every second of the day, I need you. The time I spent away from you, I felt miserable, I missed your warmth, your hugs, your kisses, the sound of your voice…” He was tearing up more and more “I only came back because you were the one I was coming back to…”
Katsuki didn’t want to talk, it would make his sobs very obvious, but he looked at him with hurt in his eyes.
“Then why did you break up with me? You knew you could’ve just talked things out with me, I already knew your secret, so why just try to hurt me to keep me away?” He had tried controlling his voice from cracking, but he failed miserably.
“Kacchan…I have no real answer to that…I thought I was keeping you safe, but I just made things worse. I’m sorry” He didn’t want to let go of his hand, but still did “I’m sorry for even suggesting it. I’ve just been hurting your feelings over and over again, and I…love you so much, I don’t want to make you cry ever again.” He covered his face in frustration “I think it will be best for me to focus on ending this war…”
Katsuki’s had also covered his face to not let him see his tears.
“Yeah, I guess that’s better for you, than worrying about relationship problems. See you tomorrow at practice…” He left before Izuku could say anything. But he couldn’t stop him, he had nothing else to say.
-
When Katsuki reached his bedroom, he couldn’t help but breakdown crying. Did Izuku just give up on him? He had said he couldn’t forgive him so easily, but he never said that he wanted it to be over. Shit, he loved Izuku too, but he had broke his heart, and had to repair it, but instead, he chose to just leave him alone to pick up the broken pieces by himself.
He couldn’t even deny his reasoning, he was asking too much for someone who was dealing with a war. He just…felt like they should mend things before anything. They were heroes, they couldn’t know if they even had another day to live, but he hoped they would.
