Beginnings to sleepless nights

Summary:

MK, after his first interaction with Macaque, has felt way more on edge than usual. Turns out there’s more of a reason he’s felt like he’s being watched.

Work Text:

It had been about a week since the incident. About a week since MK started flinching at shadows and jumping at every slight movement in the corner of his eye.

About a week since Macaque put his hand on his shoulder, only ending in panic and hurt.
MK wasn’t as affected by it as most would-at least that’s what he told himself-and had managed to adjust well!

Yeah, real well!

…the memory of him rushing aside, and pulling his jacket off to make sure the emblem on the back wasn’t changed flicked through his mind for only a moment before it was pushed away.

But now, he was just delivering noodles! For Pigsy. Right! Just push away all the bad thoughts and he’ll be perfectly fine!

That’s exactly what he did as he forcefully ignored the shadows flicking beside him as he drove to his destination. He’d already been on edge enough with the whole Calabash situation a month ago with delivering noodles, he didn’t want to acknowledge any more stress alongside that. Handing over the delivery and being paid, he started to ride back to Pigsy’s Noodles, listening to music on the way. He noted that nobody seemed to be out- it was fairly late, yeah, but it was only 9 pm! Usually people were out on the streets. But no, not even a car was driving alongside him.

Now, a perfectly well-adjusted person would either ignore this and enjoy the lack of traffic, or get a little worried and go on their way.

MK is not a well-adjusted individual, especially after recent events. So when he saw shadows move alongside his vehicle and his music cut out for a moment before returning, he was immediately on edge.

“It’s fine! Nothing’s here, just me!”
He spoke out loud, hoping it would quell his growing fears. An audible tremble in his voice as his hands shook on the wheel

“Yeah… just gonna head back and maybe I’ll take a break! Catch that rerun of Monkey Cop…” his rambling trailed off as a distinct flick of shadows appeared behind him in his car. He stiffened, trying desperately to not shake more and crash, but he could feel their eyes burning into the back of his skull. After a moment, he decided he couldn’t take it anymore and pulled to the side of the road, grabbing his staff and looking behind him

…nothing.

He released a breath. Really? Nothing?? He had to be going insane or something- maybe it was the stress? He hadn’t given himself time to process-not that he ever would-and he just pulled over for a- a stupid fear!

Maybe Wujing was right and he should go to therapy or something…
quickly pushed that thought out of his brain as he started his car back up to drive back.

Rumble rumble

Nothing. Try the keys again.

Rumble rumble-laughing?

The car wouldn’t start.

He knew it was old- his friends always joked about it breaking down whenever he needed it. How those jokes became reality. One more try

“C’monnnn, please-!”

Rumble rumble-start!

The car started up with a jolt finally
“Yes! Oh, I knew you could work!” MK praised the vehicle, hugging the steering wheel “now we just gotta get home ‘n-“
He saw something out of the corner of his eye, along with more of that laughing. MK finally turned around to see-

“Shit-!”

A tail whacked him in the face, along with another barrage of laughter. He scrambled for his staff, failing to hold it defensively in the small space of the car- this only caused more of that now infuriating laughter

“Dangit! Can you at least take me seriously??”
Two shadows seemed to materialize in his backseat, one a dark purple the other a dark red. Fear suddenly gripped him when the resemblance hit him- these were the

shadow-creature-clone-things Macaque used! The things that kept tripping him in the fight or smacking his staff from his hands! Oh, these things were gonna pay-

The red one shook itself like some kind of animal before flicking out of existence then returning right up in MK’s face, a wide, toothy grin and bright glowing eyes on display. Neither of them spoke, but MK got the distinct impression that they both didn’t want to hurt him outright, and that they were making fun of him

“Ok. Yeah, that’s… fine.” He grumbled, decidedly not fighting this and starting his car again.
“Oh- come ON!” MK barked, slamming against the wheel angrily as the engine only sputtered. Laughter behind him stopped only when he whipped around to glare at them. After a moment, the engine started with a jolt

“Alright, you two have to. Go,” he stated, hesitating “to… wherever you go. Just not here.” He finished with a satisfied huff. The two shadows looked at eachother, before the purple one shrugging and disappearing into the shadows. The red one followed after a grumpy display of displeasure.

Now alone in his car, MK drove back to the shopand to his apartment above. He parked, clocked out, and finally climbed the stairs to his bedroom. MK breathed a sigh of relief before flopping down on his bed.

Now, only if he didn’t hear distant laughter and have the feeling of someone watching him the entire night.
