The Runaway Prince That Makes Flowers Bloom

Summary:

Shu never agreed to this. He hates how he’s been told what to do and say all his life. He never got a chance to be himself. Everything had been decided and planned out for him whether he liked it or not.

He just turned 18 and now he’s forced to marry the princess of a neighbouring kingdom even though he’s told his parents multiple times he’s not interested in her.

“You have to do it for the kingdom, refusing is not an option. It’s for your own good.” It’s for the kingdom…It’s for his own good they say…What a bunch of crap.

Work Text:

Shu never agreed to this. He hates how he’s been told what to do and say all his life. He never got a chance to be himself. Everything had been decided and planned out for him whether he liked it or not.

He just turned 18 and now he’s forced to marry the princess of a neighbouring kingdom even though he’s told his parents multiple times he’s not interested in her.

“You have to do it for the kingdom, refusing is not an option. It’s for your own good.” It’s for the kingdom…It’s for his own good they say…What a bunch of crap.

His parents never try to hide the fact that they only see Shu as a tool to be used for the kingdom and even if they die, they’ll make sure to have trained the people in the castle to treat Shu in certain ways. Despite Shu, who will be the one to rule some day, still has to listen to these people who act as ‘guides’. He will never be allowed to make his own choices. Not even in their death.

He decided enough is enough, it’s driving him insane and he couldn’t take it any longer.

It’s the middle of the night when the prince sneaks through the castle. He knows the midnight guards are useless. All they do is sleep on the job so it was easy to escape them. Funny how the kingdom hasn’t been raided or attacked when security is as good as a piece of cracker. This place has turned to ruin ever since his parents took the lead.

With his smarts, he plans an easy escape route, no one will be able to see him at the castle blind spots. Not that they even realise how poorly planned this castle and guard circuits are. He did try to warn them, but it’s not like they will give him a chance to speak. Every croak from him sounds like a complaint to them.

His feet land on the other side of the tall wall separating the prison-like castle from the outside. He’s free! He’s finally free from years of tyranny. He runs away into the thick woods, not once looking back.

Shu isn’t sure how long he has been running but he’s getting tired. He pants and decides to take a quick rest under a tree. He looks up at the night sky. When was the last time it looked so clear? Maybe it’s just the environment he’s been in that makes them feel so gloomy in his eyes.

He gets up after a few minutes, dusting down his garments before continuing his journey. In the far distance, he sees light. Walking further from atop a hill, another kingdom comes in his sight. He huffs with excitement and continues to run when he hears thunder roar in the distance. He needs to find shelter soon before the weather turns against him.

He sneaks inside the kingdom, hiding in the shadows of the buildings around him. He can’t let people know he’s a prince on the run. They might capture and sell him off or worse, return him home.

He finds some old rags at the back of a clothes shop and changes into them. He removes his golden pins and diamond clips, letting his long hair fall. He quickly and neatly folds his royal clothes, hiding them under his ragged clothes as thunder booms and rain starts to pour.

He sees the people on the streets run into buildings to seek shelter and warmth. While he, on the other hand, is still determining where to go next. Would it be safe for him to show his face to the public?

The strong wind blowing makes him shiver as he curls into himself for comfort. He closes his eyes shut, and tears start to fall on his face. He’s been sitting in the cold in silence for at least thirty minutes now. Did he make the wrong choice? It feels a little late to turn back now.

Well even if he dies now from hypothermia, it’ll probably be better than returning home. At least he will be at peace.

The sound of a galloping horse and rickety wheels stop in front of him. He looks up to see a charming dressed man with blonde hair kneeling in front of him, unbothered that his fancy clothes are now dirtied by wet soil. “Are you ok? Do you not have anywhere to go?” he asks.

Shu sobs harder and shakes his head. He sees the man frown, and his hand gently wraps Shu’s arm, pulling the ravenette to his feet. “Come with me,” he ushers.

Shu blinks, the man seems nice. He has a soft smile that makes you drawn to trust him. Shu follows him and steps into the carriage without further question, it’s not like he has nothing else to lose anyway. Inside, the blonde holds an oil lantern close and passes a blanket over to help warm him up as the carriage continues to move.

A few minutes of silence between them later, the carriage comes to a stop. They step out and Shu’s mouth gapes by what lies around him. They’re inside a castle, which means this man…“You’re a prince?” he asks, bewildered.  The tattoos on his body gives an impression more fitting to a rich crook or a pirate.

The blonde shrugs his shoulders, unbothered. For a prince, he seems very casual unlike the uptight way he’s always been told to present. “Yup and I’m guessing you’re not from here? If you want, you can stay the night at the castle, I don’t mind. Oh and pardon my rudeness, what should I address you as?”

Shu’s eyes widen as he quickly bows, “T-thank you for the hospitality, Your Highness. Please, call me Hika”

The blonde waves his hand with a smile. “Don’t mention it. It saddens me to see your situation, and this is just a small gesture I do for many. I do this to help people get their bearings together because there is so much more to life. It will be a waste to throw it away. I’ll have people guide you to your temporary room and prepare something more comfortable for you to wear. Your rags cannot withstand this type of weather.”

Shu’s face flushed at the kind gesture, once again thanking the kind prince before following one of the maids to a room complete with a bath and clean clothes on the bed. He thanks the maid and closes the door, leaving him alone.

He sighs, he’s lucky to have stumbled across the blonde prince. Who knows what would have happened to him if he didn't. He takes a seat on the comfortable bed and unties his royal clothes he has kept hidden under his clothes. He looks at it before hiding it under the bed. Out of sight and best be out of mind.

In the bath, he thinks to himself. What should he do now? Where should he go? Would it be safe for him in this kingdom? The prince doesn’t seem to recognise him as a royal. He hums and looks at his reflection in the water. He makes his decision in the end, and hopefully the prince will agree with it.

The next day, Shu walks around the castle to look for the prince. Eventually, he finds the man at the archery range, his hand drawing back a bow as he aims. He takes his shot, and the arrow lands at the black ring on the target. The man clicks his tongue in annoyance and turns to grab another arrow when he notices Shu’s presence.

The ravenette bows before speaking. “Your Highness, may we talk?” The blonde gestures his hand, telling Shu to continue. “I have nowhere else to go, I was wondering if it’s possible for me to work for you? I’m not asking for a high position, being a maid is enough for me. You don’t have to pay much either, as long as it’s enough for me to survive, I would be most thankful.”

The blonde pauses, eyes glancing to the sky. He turns away with another arrow in hand. He draws the bowstring, taking aim. “You can start tomorrow morning. I’ll have my lead maid, Klara train you.” Shu perks up, feeling thankful to be given an opportunity, A new change in his life.

Before leaving, he watches an arrow fly across the field, landing in a bad spot on the target once more. He can see the blonde getting a little annoyed as he takes another dart.

Shu can’t help but step closer to the prince. “Relax your shoulders a little and straighten your right arm,” he mutters, hands gently guiding the blonde. The prince doesn’t complain nor seem to get mad that someone touched him without prior permission. The blonde takes a deep breath before releasing the arrow, it whistles in the wind, landing dead centre on the target.

His mouth slightly gapes as he turns to Shu who bows politely, “I apologise for stepping too close in your proximity. Thank you for the opportunity, My prince. I shall take my leave,” he utters before stepping away. The blonde stands there in silence, a soft smile on his lips as he takes another arrow.

Another day comes rolling in, Shu has come to learn the name of the young prince from Klara as they walk down the hallway to the kitchen. He is the same age as Shu. Young and yet he seems very mature for his age. It’s like he’s ruled over this kingdom for years.

Klara stops him and hands over one of the maid dresses available. “All of our maids had been women and we haven't had time to tailor you a new one. I tried my best to find a dress to fit you. I hope you don't mind.” Shu smiles and shakes his head. He thanks her before changing into the uniform. It’s a perfect fit that covers every part of his body. He puts on the headscarf and returns to Klara to begin his training.

Hika is a fast learner, Klara concludes. He’s able to cook and bake many dishes in a matter of days, learn the schedule and routes of the castle on the back of his hand, and even know royal etiquette and rules like it’s second nature.

One day, She can't help but ask him while they are out cleaning the garden. “Hika, where are you from?” she whispers while pulling out the dead weeds on the ground.

The man pauses, “A different kingdom. I ran away from my family because I dislike how they dictated my life,” he answers without looking at the brunette. His hand picks on the brown dead leaves, leaving soft crunches when they touch.

There's silence, other than the wind that blows their hair. “You're part of royalty aren't you?” Shu’s eyes widened for a split second. He doesn't say anything, prompting Klara to continue. “Sorry I wasn’t intentionally trying to pry… I- found your clothes under your bed when I was tasked to change the sheets and it got me thinking, if you’re trying to run away…Why didn't you get rid of them?”

Shu stays quiet for a second, then looks up at the blooming daffodils in front of him. His hand moves to gently caress them. “Because despite the painful memories they bring…it is still a part of me. It’s not something that can easily be thrown away. The past shaped you to the person you are now. No matter how hard you try to move on, it will still haunt you. Though my family crest of white-yellow chrysanthemum which ironically is supposed to mean joyfulness now bears the meaning that that previous life of mine is dead.”

Klara turns to him with pity but notices his sorrow has now turned into a soft smile on his face. His eyes continue to look at the yellow flowers fondly. “Have you ever noticed the crest that lies on Prince Luca’s chest? It has daffodils in them. A sign of new beginnings, new opportunities. The prince brings random people who need help into the castle every now and then. Whenever they question why, he answers with the same words that he also uttered to me ‘I do this to help people get their bearings together because there is so much more to life. It will be a waste to throw it away’. It was then and there, I knew my life would be in great hands if I stayed here.”

The two maids make eye contact. Klara softly smiles back at him and turns to look at the yellow daffodils with a newfound admiration for them. “Many travellers have said that this is a kingdom of opportunities. A place to find yourself. It too has helped me find my purpose…Don’t worry Hika, your secret is safe with me.”

Klara leaves a minute later to tend to her other duties, leaving Shu in the garden alone to appreciate the flowers. He hears footsteps steadily approach him. He turns to see none other than the prince himself, clad in his white and gold garments. Shu bows at his presence, noticing the blonde glancing between him and the floras.

“I take it you enjoy the gardens? I notice you're here most of the time during breaks,” The prince speaks.

Shu turns away sheepishly from being caught. So he noticed… “I love learning about flowers and their language. I think it’s a beautiful form of storytelling that not many realise.”

The blonde hums and walks over to the hedge full of yellow roses. “Then, would you care to share your knowledge with me?”

Shu chuckles and nods his head. He follows the prince, taking his place next to the taller. “Yellow roses symbolise friendship. Let's say you have a friend you care deeply for. These flowers are a perfect gift for them,” Luca nods. Maybe he should give some to his friends when he visits their kingdom someday.

Luca then turns to the burgundy dahlias planted a few rows down with the maid following dutifully to answer his unspoken question. “Burgundy or black dahlias means betrayal. It is one of the most negative meanings out of the other colours. Best not to give it to people lightly,” Shu informs. The prince takes note, maybe he should plant something else as a replacement.

“Interesting…” Luca mumbles. “What about my favourite flower? What do they mean?”

Shu hums with interest, “What is your favourite flower, My prince?”

The blonde walks over to the rows of yellow and purple flowers growing flourishly. Shu’s face turns a light shade of red as he mutters “Tulips…” They’re my favourite too…

Luca nods, waiting for Shu to tell him their meaning. The maid clears his throat, “Yellow tulips means joy, strength and growth. They represent the warmth of the sun and new beginnings…Is it fine for me to say that they…kind of remind me of you, My prince.” Shu whispers his thoughts just above his breath before turning to the purple tulips.

“Purple tulips represent royalty, charm and elegance. They are used in a way to express one's attraction for someone who they find their appearance, personality or charisma captivating,” he continues his explanation.

The prince placed a finger to his chin, then kneels to caress the petals of a purple tulip. He plucks the flower from the ground and hands it over to the ravenette with a grin. “They kind of remind me of you, Hika. You're a fascinating individual, full of charm. Thank you for taking your time to entertain me” The blonde says before bidding the maid farewell and walks out of the garden without further explanation, leaving Shu with the purple tulip in hand, speechless. His heart is beating loudly in his chest as he looks at the flower, face growing hotter by the second.

Shu wakes up to the purple tulip Luca gave him last week on the windowsill. A glass bottle is used as a makeshift vase. He should dry them so they’ll last longer. He thinks with a smile before getting up and heading to the bath. Today is his turn to prepare breakfast for all of the maids.

As much as it is nice to have the company of the other maids, Shu enjoys his alone time in the kitchen, where he is able to sing songs with a skip in his steps without worry of bumping into people. Although, unbeknownst to him there is a spectator just around the corner.

“Good morning, Hika,” the man greets. Shu jumps. He doesn't expect anyone but the guards to be awake at this hour. Out of everyone, it’s a surprise to see the prince up and early in his sleeping garments.

His bed hair makes his golden locks extra fluffy and Shu without thinking steps closer to pat them in place neatly. When he realises what he did, he steps back in horror. Back at his castle, anyone who dares touch a royal, especially at their sacred head, is punished severely. “My prince- I’m sorry. I don't know what came over me. I- I.”

Luca waves it off with a chuckle, “It’s fine. What are you making?”

The ravenette looks down, relieved yet a little ashamed of himself for being so casual with the prince when their status is so far apart to be allowed such actions. “Just some eggs benedict and buttered bread with fruits at the side,” he answers while placing the bread dough he made into the oven.

He walks to the bowl of fruits, picking out the bad ones and throwing them away. He feels something heavy resting on his shoulder. He stutters, face growing red when he realises it’s Luca’s head “M-my prince, aren't we a little too close?”

The blonde just shrugs, “Can I have a strawberry?” Shu looks at him, bewildered by how nonchalant the royal is but nonetheless, he picks a berry and feeds it to Luca who grins widely. “Thank you,” he utters before pulling himself away to look at the baked goods in the oven.

The maid stands there speechless and confused while his hands continue to pick out the berries. “Say, I’ve been wondering. If I were to give you a promotion, would you accept it?”

Shu pauses as he looks at the prince to make sure he isn't playing some sort of joke. The man has a neutral face, it’s a little hard to tell what he’s thinking about at the moment. “Depends on the job,” he answers, not giving a solid conclusion just yet.

Luca smirks and steps closer to him to hand over a flower. A freesia to be exact “A promotion to be my personal maid. Kind of like a non-political lord-in-waiting if you will. So what do you say?”

Shu is silent, mouth agape with no words coming out. His face blushes slightly, lips pursed and hands gripping the flower tighter. A lord-in-waiting is a very high position, so why is he, a common maid Luca picked up from rags, being offered such a personal task. “But why me? I don’t know if I can live up to your expectations. Plus, we’ve only known each other for a month and a half…”

The prince wraps his hand around Shu’s, “Someone told me flowers are a beautiful form of storytelling. Now, I too find them quite intriguing. Your answer lies in them. I’ll give you time to think about it,” the blonde responds and leaves the maid to his duties.

Shu looks down at the flower. A Freesia, it’s a symbol of trust and friendship. So, does that mean the reason why Luca chose him is because he trusts him and maybe, just maybe the prince wants to know him better? Something he had also been longing for. A small smile spread on his lips. This also means that Luca studied flower language just for him.

His heart thumps. It’s been doing so more often lately, especially with the blonde prince. He is a kind person indeed and every gesture he does is gentlemanly. How can you develop any ill feelings for such a person? How couldn’t you not want to get closer to someone who is so understanding of you?

Shu knocks on heavy wooden doors before stepping in with a silver tray in tow. “Good morning My Prince, breakfast is ready,” he utters while placing the tray down on a table. He draws the curtains open, hearing the prince groan in annoyance when the sun rays hit his face.

“Give me five, maybe ten more minutes…” Luca whines and pulls the blanket over his head.

Shu sighs and stands next to the bed, a hand on his hips like a parent about to scold their child. “No can do. We have to meet Prince Eveland today, remember?”

The blonde doesn't budge. Lately, the prince had been more stubborn but in a playful sort of way. Shu rolls his eyes with an endearing smile. Looks like he has to pull his special move and bribe the man again. “I’ll feed you breakfast if you wake up right now.”

That catches Luca’s attention. He practically jumps out of bed with renewed vigour and runs over to the table, waiting for Shu to feed him like an excited little kid.

The ravenette laughs, for the past months of being Luca’s personal maid, he has also learned a lot about the blonde, especially the fact he has a soft spot for Shu. It seems like the prince is easily responsive to all of Shu’s ideas.

“Open wide,” and just as much, Shu is also very agreeable to Luca’s whims. He can’t say no to that face. The maid giggles, watching the blonde beam happily like the sun.

Ever since he became closer to Luca’s presence, Shu has quickly come to realise that he has developed feelings for the prince. Something he really shouldn’t be doing. When he knows it will never bear fruit. It’s clearly a one-sided attraction since royals are not allowed to be with commoners and that is what Shu is now, a nobody.

He’s no longer a prince, he threw that life away in favour of a new beginning at the Kaneshiro’s Kingdom. Despite how saddened he is, knowing that one day his stupid little crush will be married off to a beautiful princess, he’s just happy that he managed to stumble upon the blonde. He wouldn’t trade the encounter for anything in the world.

Seeing Luca happy should be enough for him…right? But does it really? Will he be able to handle seeing Luca being so in love with another person in such close proximity as their maid?

“Hika… Are you ok?” That voice with a charming accent calls him.

The maid gently smiles and nods his head “Yeah, I’m fine… Just thinking about the future and suddenly remembering stuff from my past.”

Luca frowns and places a hand on Shu's "Well, the past is in the past now, and the future is unpredictable. As much as you plan it, sometimes you can’t expect it to go the way you want, there's no use dwelling on it too much. Focus on the present because that's where you are now."

Shu sighs and feeds Luca another forkful of pancakes, laughing fondly when whipped cream is smothered all over his face. "Yeah… and right now I feel very happy, thanks to you Luca," he mumbles while grabbing a tissue to wipe the cream off.

The prince smiles wider when he hears Shu call him by his name and only his name. Of course, they only do so in the confines of his bedroom or when they are sure it's just the two of them. “I’m glad.”

When breakfast is done, Luca turns to Shu. "You get ready too, I had Klara prepare something fancier for you to wear on special occasions like this," he informs before leaving to take a bath. Shu nods and picks up the dirty dishes to wash and put away.

In his room, Shu pats down the suit Klara gave neatly, turning to the long mirror in the corner of his room to check himself. His eyes soften at his reflection, lips slightly upturned, there's a linger of regret on his face. He caresses his hair that used to reach his thighs.

The day after he got his job as a maid, he cut them short up to his chest and removed his pink highlights. He was proud of its growth but he needs to move on from that image. Lest people of royalty might recognise him. He remembers the surprised look on Luca's face when he first saw it.

He places his white lace maid headscarf and smiles to himself. It doesn’t match his outfit nor he’s forced to wear the accessory but it has now become a part of him and it feels off without it. "This is better," he whispers to himself before meeting up with the prince at the front gates.

He bows in His Highness’ presence and looks around, questioning the lack of guards that would usually follow him on trips like these. "It's a short journey so no guards are needed. Come on, I'll be the one steering." The prince reaches out a hand to Shu who accepts it happily. He helps the ravenette up the carriage with him sitting next to the maid.

The sun cascades lightly on their skin throughout their journey, sunny yet not too hot. They talk the entire way to the kingdom, telling stories and cracking jokes with each other. If it weren't for their title and obvious difference in clothing, one might assume they are just very good friends on an adventure.

Upon reaching Prince Eveland's kingdom, the common folks greet them warmly, used to the blonde prince's presence as the two royals are close. The carriage stops at the castle's court where Prince Eveland is seen waiting for their arrival. Their feet touch the ground and they all bow as a greeting and courtesy. "Thank you for hosting us Ike," Luca speaks for the both of them while handing out a yellow rose.

Ike straightens himself, noticing the flower presented, "Thank you for the gift, Luca. It's nice to see you and your..." The brunette pauses, eyes widening ever so slightly before smiling. "Ah, this must be your maid that you’ve foretold me?"

Shu chucks Ike’s reaction off to the side, after all, it's uncommon for a prince to be travelling around with a maid. The ravenette places a hand on his chest with a gentle nod out of respect, "Indeed I am Prince Eveland. It's an honour to meet you."

Ike smiles, "It’s an honour to meet you too, please step in." The brunette guides them through the castle and to his study where their discussion will be held. Ike places the rose in a vase along with his collection of beautifully bloomed flora before taking a seat opposite of Luca.

Shu wanders around the shelves close by while the two talk about royal affairs and trades. Normally, non-royals aren't allowed to hear such private matters and yet Shu is trusted with important knowledge when he could have easily sold off the information to other kingdoms to make money.

A few hours pass, and Luca calls Shu over when their discussion is settled. While making their way out, Shu notices a garden filled with rare flowers he has never seen before. He gently tugs at Luca's sleeve, eyes silently asking for permission. The blonde chuckles, "Ike, do you mind if Hika takes a look around the gardenscapes?"

The brunette shakes his head with a giggle. "Not at all, go right ahead Hika. I'll even allow you to pick something for yourself" The maid beams, he thanks Ike and makes his way to the beautiful flora, leaving the two royals to watch him from afar.

"It's him isn't he?" Ike questions, his cheerful voice now turned serious and careful.

"The runaway prince? That he is," Luca answers. "I found him in my kingdom dressed in rags on a rainy day. I didn't know back then and thought he was another lost commoner. I took him in and the next day he came to me asking to be a maid. I accepted because he sounded like he desperately wanted to stay. I notice he has excellent knowledge in the art of archery, a noble skill and he intrigued me to get to know more about him. I was weirded out when I found zero history of him. No family to his name. Then, a week after that was when I heard the news of a runaway prince and what they describe perfectly matches Shu or I guess in this case, Hika. His appearance and date of disappearance," he retells his story.

"So, why didn't you expose him after finding out?" the brunette asks, not out of malice but genuine curiosity.

"He says he's never been happier ever since we met. He doesn't go into detail but he always seems depressed whenever he recalls his past. It makes me wonder how they treat people back in the Yamino’s Kingdom. They had always been so secretive and ruled with an iron fist. It's obvious Shu wants to start anew and I'm all about someone who seeks to turn their life for the better. Plus, his company has been nice. Hika is a very interesting and admirable person..." he mutters while looking at the maid with a longing smile on his lips.

"I know that look anywhere. You've fallen in love with him, haven’t you?" Ike turns to him with a knowing smirk.

Luca chuckles nervously from being caught red-handed. He scratches the back of his neck, eyes darting to the side. "It's hard not to...Oh, that reminds me, do you mind if we have a walk around for some sightseeing? Hika mentioned how he never got to leave his home so I plan to show him as much of the world as I can. Could you order your guards to have my carriage ready at 6 pm at the entrance for us to leave?"

Ike gives him a thumbs up. "No problem, have fun on your date," he teases, making Luca turn red.

Shu returns to the two royals with a flower in hand, he thanks Ike for the opportunity to explore the field, feeling giddy and fulfilled. The brunette looks at the flowers in the maid’s hand, a wide smile spreads on his face. "A beautiful choice my dear Hika. Then, I shall leave you two to your own devices. Have a nice rest of your day," and with that, Ike walks away to tend to his duties.

Luca turns to Shu, his hand gently takes the bunch of flowers off the ravenette's hand to place it on his head. "Kalmias are perfect for you. Come on, let's go have a stroll around town." Shu follows the prince in silence, face growing red from Luca's gentle touch next to his ear.

They walk around town where people greet them from left and right. Luca smiles fondly at Shu whose eyes sparkle in excitement. He points at the beautiful decor and unique foods and clothes available. Luca spoils Shu with whatever he wants, it honestly overwhelms the maid a little. He's not used to receiving gifts so when Luca drops hundreds for him, it leaves him stuttering.

"I noticed something peculiar... There's a clock tower yet we haven't heard a bell ring the whole day unlike the one back at your castle," Shu mutters while looking up at the tall building.

"Ike isn't fond of bells, he had them removed," Luca clarifies. "Speaking of which, it's almost three o'clock. Let's have fika." Shu tilts his head, confused by the unfamiliar word. Luca notices and begins explaining, "The people of this kingdom celebrate this tradition called fika at 10 am and 3 pm. The easiest way I can describe it, it’s basically a coffee break but its aim is more towards socialisation rather than eating." The maid's lips form an 'o' intrigued by the customs.

The two step into a bakery around the corner, the smell of freshly baked goods makes their mouths salivate. One of the workers who notices their presence, curtsies with a smile. "Welcome noble prince and his humble maid, please feel free to look around," she greets before returning to the kitchen to grab another tray of pastries.

The two walk up to the displays with a tray and tongs in hand. "Anything catches your fancy?" Luca asks. Shu looks around, noticing a few pastries he's unfamiliar with. In the end, he decides on cardamom buns and lingonberry rolls.

"What about you?" the maid questions. Luca smiles and walks up to the counter to order something called 'prinsesstårta' or princess cake as he translates to Shu along with hot drinks to go with their baked goods.

The worker from before who has dark hair with two tone purple braids turns to the fridge to take out said cake and places it on a small display tower. "Will that be all Your Highness?"

The blonde hums, "I'll take some vanilla hearts to go, thank you."

She nods and calculates the total. "I will pass over the vanilla hearts later, please enjoy your food." She gives a little bow and watches the two step outside with their treats in tow.

Once out of earshot she squeals, catching the attention of another staff member with pink-yellow hair split in the middle. "Oh my god they are so cute together Koto! Ah, imagine a story where the prince and maid fall in love and they have to fight for their right to be together," she swoons.

Koto shakes her head while piping cream into the pastries, "I'm guessing you're going to make another story based on your people watching Melo?" The dark haired girl only smirks as she turns to prepare the vanilla hearts with a skip in her step.

Shu hums as he takes bites out of his pastry. Fluffy, sweet and melts in your mouth. He watches Luca slice into the princess cake, revealing the beautiful layers inside. He places a slice on Shu's plate before taking one for himself. The maid eagerly takes a bite, eyes closed as he savours the taste. He places a hand on his cheek, preening happily.

Luca watches the ravenette with the fondest smile on his face. "Do you have a sweet tooth?" Shu reopens his eyes and nods, taking another bite of the cake. The prince chuckles, "I'll keep that in mind," he mumbles. They chat over the baked goods, watching the townspeople engage in their fika. As time passes, more laughter and smiles are shared between the two.

Before they leave, Meloco gives them their pastries in a transparent yellow wrap with a purple bow. "Freshly made for you two. Thank you for stopping by our shop," she curtsies and leaves to tend to the customers.

They continue their sightseeing, while Shu is busy admiring a sculpture on a fountain and entertaining the kids who flock to him, Luca walks over to a botanist with pink hair and a rose as an accessory. She greets the prince with a bow, noticing him holding onto a mini bouquet with money in his other hand. She nods and accepts the payment with a thank you.

She watches him walk over to a ravenette who waves goodbye to the children, the flower hidden behind his back. "Ready to go home?" Luca asks, noticing a glimpse of sadness on Shu's face but nonetheless nods. It's been an amazing day but they have to return eventually.

They make their way to the gates where their carriage awaits like he requested from Ike. Luca thanks the guards and gets on along with Shu. They wave goodbye and slowly make their journey home.

Midway, the sky turns dark quicker than expected. The change of wind and atmosphere rings alarm bells in Shu’s head. “Luca, I think it’s going to rain heavily very soon. We need to stop and get inside now,” he warns. The prince trusts Shu’s judgement and stops the carriage under a shady tree and quickly ties the horse down

He stops the ravenette who is about to step into the carriage, making him turn with confusion on his face. Luca gently moves him to the side, then pulls out the drawers under the seat and unfolds the chair cushion to cover the top, effectively making the space bigger for the two to sit and even lie down comfortably. Shu admires the design in awe and steps in with Luca following from behind.

A few minutes later, they hear trickles of rain gradually growing heavier by the second. Luca peeks outside through the small window at the door with a hum, “Looks like it will be a while. Let’s just get comfortable and enjoy the vanilla hearts we bought.” Shu nods in agreement and takes one of the oil lanterns, lighting it up to place it near the entrance.

Luca lifts the cushion to grab blankets from the drawers, passing one to Shu who takes it with a thanks. Luca unwraps the cute packaging, passing the pastry to the ravenette after taking one. They eat in silence before it’s broken by Shu’s giggles.

The blonde looks at him with a tilt to his head. The maid leans closer to his face, “You have vanilla cream on your face,” he mumbles and uses his finger to clean up the mess. Luca’s face heats up from the intimacy, one of his hand unconsciously grabs onto Shu’s wrist that in turn makes Shu flush.

Luca’s eyes widen when he realises what he’d done. He lets go of Shu’s hand, eyes looking away, “Sorry…” he whispers sheepishly, heart thumping loudly in his ribcage. He just hopes Shu doesn’t hear it.

The ravenette smiles gently and shakes his head, “It’s ok.” He whispers while wiping his hand with a clean cloth and the two continue to eat quietly.

“Thank you,” he hears Luca utter. He looks up to see the prince handing over a mini bouquet, still avoiding eye contact. “Since we were visiting Ike, I studied some of the flowers that grow there and I’m glad I found a bouquet unique to the kingdom’s flora… Hika, your companionship has been amazing. I'm glad I made you as my personal maid and I appreciate every moment spent with you. I hope you enjoyed today and I would like you to have this bouquet as a small token of my appreciation.”

Shu’s mouth gapes slightly, his eyes soften, and his mouth turns to a smile. He takes a few pansies from the arrangement and places them in Luca’s suit pocket. “I should be the one thanking you, for picking me up from the dirt road, giving me shelter and a job. You did so much for me. I enjoy your companionship a lot too and today has been one of the best days ever.”

Luca smiles gently, “I’m glad you had fun.” The blonde finally makes eye contact with Shu for a brief second before shyly looking away once more. He clears his throat and wraps his blanket around him tighter.

Their comfortable silence continues for a minute. Luca’s brows furrow, glancing over at the ravenette at times who notices his uneasiness, “You seem like you have something to say…”

Luca sighs and opens his mouth but no sound comes out. He pauses, takes a deep breath and continues. “I have something important to ask. My father wants me to organise an event next month so I can find a significant other. It will be a masquerade ball for royals only and he wants me to choose someone at the end to dance with. I need you and Klara to help make sure everything is in order.”

Pieces of Shu’s heart fall apart. The king is an old man and he’s not in the best of health, which is why Luca takes on most of his responsibilities at such a young age. He can understand that the king wants his son to marry soon and carry on their legacy but the thought of Luca being with someone makes him wish he is still a royal, just so he could be accepted by the king and to maybe marry the blonde prince one day.

Shu weeps internally but still drags a warm smile on his face, “You have my trust to plan everything accordingly. I will share the news and start planning as soon as we reach home,” he answers, trying his best to hide the disappointment in his voice. Luca thanks him, his smile is small. The prince doesn’t seem too enthusiastic with this ball either.

Hours pass and the rain doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. They decide to sleep and continue their journey tomorrow morning. Two bodies slumber at two separate ends out of gentility but both of their hearts yearn to be closer. Entangled in each other’s warmth. They wish one another good night before blowing off the lamp.

Shu groans when he wakes up. His waist feels heavy when he tries to move. Looking down he sees the prince hugging him close, his body heat feels calming. It seems like no matter how far, they still manage to find each other in the end. Shu can’t help but pass a tear down his cheek the longer he watches the other. He takes a deep breath to calm himself down, a hand gently rakes through golden locks with care.

He watches Luca snuggle closer, unaware that what they’re doing is considered scandalous. If they are caught in such acts, it could tarnish Luca’s name but the selfish side of Shu wants this to stay longer. He shuffles comfortably, letting Luca’s head lean against his drumming chest. He closes his eyes and buries his nose in Luca’s hair, fingers untangling golden locks.

It’s fine, he tells himself. The chances of someone being anywhere close to where they are is slim. No one will know, no one shall know.

The prince only smiles as he wraps his arms tighter, silently preening in happiness that Shu reciprocates his feelings.

They wake up later, giving their morning greetings like normal as if the two never cuddled each other in their sleep. They continue their journey home without further issue, never mentioning or questioning their acts this morning. ‘Maybe Luca is embarrassed or upset that he did something so…disgraceful and unseemly,’   Shu’s reasons to himself.

It has been a busy month for Klara and Shu. They are working hard to prepare the ballroom for the event happening at the end of the week. The two sigh out loud the moment they sit down, catching a break out in the gardens where no one is around to disturb them.

Shu purses his lips nervously as he thinks about a plan he’s been mapping out in his head for weeks. “I’m going to join the ball,” he whispers to the only person he could trust to not expose him.

Klara turns to him bewildered by his sudden declaration. “What? Why and how? It’s only for royals and the chamber orchestra the prince hired, not even guards are allowed anywhere inside.”

Shu scoffs at himself as he grips his uniform tightly. His emotions are pulling on his heart strings so tightly that it might just snap. It annoys him how much Luca is on his mind. How he can’t stop loving him despite knowing this road leads to nowhere. “For selfish personal reasons...Plus, it’s a masquerade, it’ll be easier for me to slip in. I just have to change my appearance a little, the mask will do its job to hide my face.”

Klara hums, the sole of her feet hitting the ground gently. “Are you jealous?” she asks, looking up to Shu who looks away nervously, struggling to answer. “You want to sneak in because you’re curious of who Prince Luca would choose to dance with…You’re upset because you love the prince and wish to be with him,” she continues.

The ravenette sits in silence, unable to retort when she hits the nail on the coffin. He blinks quickly to stop the tears forming in the corner of his eyes when he feels Klara pat him on the back for comfort, “I’m not here to push away your feelings. I think the feelings you’re going through are completely valid, Hika. Don’t worry, I’ll help you get in,” she whispers with a reassuring smile.

Shu’s lips wobble, and his head hangs low, never would he imagine stooping this far for a person. “Thank you, Klara…and it’s Shu. My real name is Shu…”

The brunette lips form an ‘o’ then a smile, “Thank you for trusting in me, Shu”

The day of the ball arrives. After making sure everything is in order, Klara enters Shu’s room to help him get ready. His hair is trimmed short and temporary dye is used to cover his natural hair.

He bends down to retrieve his royal garments from under the bed. One look at the crest, and floods of horrible memories with his family resurface. He shakes his head to clear the bad thoughts when Klara places a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

He takes a deep breath and heads to the bathroom to change. When he steps out, Klara gasps in awe “You look amazing Shu” she compliments, making the ravenette blush. He walks to the mirror with his eyes on the floor,  nervous to see his reflection.

His hand curls into a fist as he slowly looks at himself - the royal clothes - they…don’t feel as terrible as he remembers. He combs a hand along his hair. He feels…different. Maybe it’s because of his new life, he doesn’t feel as tied down. The garment doesn’t carry the same weight as it did in the past. The bad memories are still there but he doesn’t have to worry, he knows he’s safe here.

He turns to Klara who steps up to help fix the crest in place, a smile on her face. “Good luck,” she whispers before leaving. Shu takes the mask that he made. It's skull-like with a mix of white and purple, and a few purple tulips to decorate. He puts it on and makes his way to the ballroom.

Luca huffs out in boredom, one hand nursing a glass of wine alone at the centre. No one at this event captivated him like a certain someone. Their fancy dresses and suits sparkle to flaunt their wealth but the prince rolls his eyes away at the sight.

If his father is here, he would have nagged him for not engaging with people. He could hear his father’s soft but commanding tone going, "Just pick someone already!" He frowns, most of them just feel like they're being nice for the sake of being nice or to lick his boot. He's had a few people flirt with him but he shuts them down since he has his interest in someone else.

A lady walks up to him with a smug look under her lace half-mask. She seems to be a lot older than him, possibly early to mid thirties. He greets her with a bow out of respect for a senior and the two engage in small talk.

Immediately, Luca starts to feel uncomfortable with her presence. Overly flirty and clingy with no regard for his feelings or boundaries. He laughs nervously when she pulls him by the arm, wanting to force Luca to dance with her. Plus, what’s a middle aged woman doing here with a barely legal adult?

As he was about to run away, Luca's eye caught someone walking behind a crowd. His eyes widen, his mouth smiling enthusiastically for this person. He pries the annoying lady off, ignoring her offended gasp when he told her to screw off.

Shu is wandering amongst the crowd of royals. Some introduce themselves to him, hoping to be on friendly terms and form connections. Shu responds with the same amount of respect but his mission tonight is not to mingle.

While looking around, Shu accidentally stumbles across a familiar brunette, Ike. Shu freezes in place out of panic when Ike turns around, “Good evening, please pardon my presence as I have somewhere else to go,” he utters before stepping off somewhere else. Shu lets out with a nervous breath, hopefully Ike didn't notice it was him.

When he finds Luca in the centre of the room, all he can do is watch from afar. His eyes follow the multiple people walking up to him. How he wishes he can walk up to the man right then and there.

Those who flirt with the blonde prince make Shu's heart ache in annoyance but nothing pisses him off more than this one lady who is all up in Luca's personal space. It's obvious the blonde prince is uncomfortable with her but she doesn’t seem to care. Shu clicks his tongue, he needs to do something or be somewhere else before he loses it and causes a scene.

Just as he walks away, a hand stops him, "Excuse me, would you care to dance?” a man asks. Shu turns to see a guy with jet black hair and red highlights. This red mask barely covers his charming and calm smile. The ravenette kindly bows and refuses the offer. Thankfully, the man doesn't complain much and accepts Shu's rejection openly.

He doesn't even get a chance to step away when he's stopped by yet another person, "May I humbly request you to be my partner for tonight’s dance?" the person asks with a chuckle to his tone. Shu freezes in place. He recognises that voice anywhere.

He looks over his shoulder to see blonde hair cascading over a golden lion mask. White and gold dress his pristine suit, a yellow tulle flows behind him gently when he moves. The slither of ink across his body hidden behind a tall collar.

Shu's heart beats loudly in his ear. His presence is found out and he should really refuse and run away but his selfish side nods his head in agreement, following what his heart wants. He lets himself be dragged to the centre of the room where others flock to join the dance with their partners.

Right on cue, soft classical music is played for the prince and his chosen partner. The two bows as a greeting and gloved hands intertwine around one another. Their footsteps move in rhythm to the music, gliding under the bright fancy chandelier. "May I ask for your name?" The blonde asks in a whisper.

Shu pauses and mutters in a voice lower in pitch, "Kurano."

Luca smiles as he twirls the shorter one around, letting Kurano’s tailcoat flutter in momentum. He captures the man into his arms, their bodies inching closer as their waltz slowly in tempo. "Which kingdom are you from? I don't seem to recognise the crest," Luca questions further.

Shu swallows a nervous lump in his throat as he comes up with something, "Santos... It's a fairly new kingdom," he answers, trying to hold down the shakiness in his voice.

Luca hums in acknowledgement. "You know Kurano, from the short time we had, you've piqued my interest. There is such a large crowd in this room and yet, it seems I'm only able to see you. Truly, your allure outshines the rest."

Shu's face flush. "Thank you... you flatter me..." he mumbles but in all honesty, it breaks his heart knowing for sure Luca doesn't reciprocate his feelings when he’s out here flirting with ’another man’. He sees Shu as nothing but a friend.

What makes it all the more bitter, Luca is fawning over him. The 'royal' him, ‘Kurano.’ Fancy and prim with a high status and not... the him that is now. A nobody with nothing to his name. If he had still been a royal and attended this ball, would Luca pull him to the centre all the same?

A hand gently lifts Kurano’s chin to look into the blonde's lilac eyes. The prince frowns, "I see your headspace is somewhere else. Forget about your worries and let's just enjoy the night." He turns the ravenette around as they cross around the room. Their tailcoats flow in motion at every step. It's clear to everyone that Shu is the star of the night. The one who captured the prince’s eye.

Shu hugs the blonde close as the song slowly comes to an end. In the corner of his eye, he sees the insufferable lady from before in the crowd, fuming at the fact Shu has Luca's undivided attention. He can't help but smile smugly at her, more so when it triggers her as she storms away with a clack in her heels.

The song ends and they bow as a thank you. Before Shu could leave, Luca stops him by the wrist once more "Kurano, may I take you somewhere a little more private to talk?" he asks with a gentle tone as if he’s telling a secret. Shu just dumbly nods his head, unable to reject the offer when he’s too curious and blinded by love to think.

They end up at the balcony just outside the ballroom, leaving the event behind as they oversee the gardenscapes under the dark sky. The same gardenscape where the two would often meet on a daily basis during breaks before Shu got promoted and now able to stand by the prince’s side at all times.

While Shu's eye is in awe of the view during a full moon night, Luca kneels next to him with a red rose in hand. "For you, I plan to give this flower to the person who has captured my heart, as a symbolism that I’ve given myself to you, and you, Kurano are the one who I would offer my soul to. Please, accept my humble request to have you as my chosen partner."

Shu’s mouth gapes, body trembling like an earthquake. Shaky gloved hands take the rose, his heart breaking and shredding to pieces from Luca’s declaration. He tears up, sniffles can be heard clearly. "I'm sorry...You can't...You're choosing the wrong person, I can't- give you what you deserve."

The blonde prince stands up, frowning, "What do you mean? Why can't-"

"Because I don't exist!" Shu shouts with a choke, crying harder. "I love you, My Prince... but you can't love me. You can’t love someone who’s soul no longer belongs to this version of themself," he continues, head hanging low. The rose thorns pricking his hand feel numb.

Shu feels his mask being gently pulled off his face, yet his eyes continue to be glued to the ground. Scared and overwhelmed, his legs feel like jelly.

"I love you too, Shu" he hears the prince utter.

Shu looks up, the golden mask on Luca's face is placed to the side next to his. The prince looks at him with a longing smile, full of adoration, "Luca I-" he pauses, mouth agape and eyes widen in shock when he processes what Luca said.

He said his real name. "You...knew?"

The prince sighs and steps closer to the ravenette, his thumbs wiping away the tears that fall on Shu’s cheek "Shu Yamino, the prince who ran away from his kingdom. I found out a week after we met. Honestly, I was hoping you would sneak into the event and I’m so happy that you did. You may look different, but you can never fool me, not when you have those purple amethyst eyes that shine like stars in a galaxy. Everything I've said tonight is true. You piqued my interest, you outshine people and you have captured my heart ever since I let go of that bowstring at the range. You're a flower that blooms from hardship. You’re admirable and I choose you to be the one to stand next to me if you would let me."

Shu's stares at him in disbelief. All this time, Luca knew of his origins and yet, he would treat him the way he wanted to be seen. Luca never exposed him even though he could. He was respectful of his past and wishes, never pushing to tell, only lending an ear if he needed to.

The ravenette finds himself falling into Luca's hold, a shaky breath escaping his lips "But can we even be together? I'm just a lowly maid now."

The blonde smiles, "You think I wouldn't look up about this? In the law, it's stated as long as there's royal blood present it counts. And you Shu are still a royal blood in the end no matter which life you choose. As long as you have that, we technically aren't breaking any rules."

Shu laughs, a grin spreads on his face now that the huge weight has been lifted off his shoulder, "But, can we wait and only do my reveal when we're about to get married? That way, my kingdom won't have the right to claim me back when I'm married to the king of a different kingdom."

Luca laughs and hugs the shorter tightly. "Of course, I wouldn't mind being a little risque or scandalous with my maid here in the meantime," he teases. Shu rolls his eyes playfully before pulling Luca into a kiss.

Like the first spring flower, their hearts bloom in their chest with love and warmth like the gentle sun from a windowsill. Their hands gently caress each other's face as the kiss deepens, the ball long forgotten in the minds.

Ike is busy in his study, nose buried deep in paperwork when he hears a knock on the door. A young lady dressed in white with round glasses and a white-blue tipped feather pin on her uniform steps in. "My King, you have a very important invitation," she informs while handing over a letter.

Ike thanks her and opens the yellow-purple wax seal carefully. He reads the contents with a smirk, "Aia, please clear my schedule on this date."
