Brothers (2006)

Summary:

September 5, 2006; Los Angeles, California

Jack cooks for Tony

Work Text:

The soft glow of kitchen lights illuminates the cozy apartment as Jack Bauer, renowned for his unwavering dedication to duty, stands at the stove, fully focused on the task at hand. It's a rare moment of tranquility amid their chaotic lives, especially after the previous day's harrowing events, where Tony Almeida was shot in the neck during a failed mission. Jack, determined to help, decides to cook Tony's favorite comfort food: a hearty beef stew. Tony, propped on the couch with a thick blanket, watches Jack with amusement and gratitude.

"Jack, I never pegged you for the domestic type," he says, his voice raspy yet affectionate.

Jack chuckles softly, eyes fixed on the bubbling pot. "I have my moments, Tony. After what you've been through, I thought a home-cooked meal might aid your recovery."

Tony smiles, the gesture tugging at the fresh scar on his neck, a constant reminder of his close call. "I appreciate it, Jack. Smells amazing."

Jack adds a pinch of herbs, his movements are deliberate and practiced, despite the unusual role. "It's an old family recipe, something my grandpa made when we were sick. Figured it might help you too."

"Your grandpa, huh?" Tony's voice softens, his eyes distant with memories. "Heard a lot about him. Wish I'd met him."

Jack's smile holds a hint of sadness as he stirs the stew, the rich aroma filling the room. "He'd have liked you, Tony. He always said a man's worth is in the company he keeps."

Tony's gaze softens, and he shifts to ease the neck discomfort. "I'm honored to be considered good company by the Bauers."

Jack checks the stew's consistency, nodding in satisfaction. "Almost done. How's the pain today?"

Tony grimaces, a fleeting expression of discomfort. "Manageable. Docs say I'm healing well. Thanks to you, I'm alive to complain about a sore neck."

Jack's eyes flicker with concern. "I wish I'd arrived sooner, spared you this pain."

"Hey, you did arrive, Jack," Tony says firmly. "You always do. That's what matters."

Jack turns off the stove and ladles the stew into bowls, steam rising like a warm embrace. "Here, let's eat. This'll put hair on your chest."

Tony laughs, wincing slightly. "Not sure I need more hair, but I'll take the nourishment."

They sit across from each other at the small dining table, spoons clinking against bowls punctuating the comfortable silence. Jack watches Tony take the first bite, eyes closing in pleasure.

"Damn, Jack, this is incredible," Tony says, his voice laced with surprise. "Tastes like home."

Jack smiles, genuine and heartwarming. "Glad you like it. It's the least I can do for my partner."

They eat in companionable silence, the stew's warmth mirroring their friendship. Jack, the protector, finds solace in this simple act of caring for Tony, who has endured so much.

"Jack," Tony begins, setting down his spoon, "this means a lot. You taking care of me like this."

Jack's eyes meet Tony's, a silent understanding passing between them. "We're brothers, Tony. We look out for each other, no matter what."

Tony nods, his eyes glistening with gratitude and affection. "Brothers. Yeah, I like that."

The evening continues, the stew soothing Tony's physical wounds and the emotional scars of their work. In this moment, over a simple bowl of stew, their bond deepens; it's a quiet, unspoken promise to always be there, through good and bad.
