Can We Fix It (2006)

Summary:

September 2006, Timberline, Oregon

Boog rages when Shaw shoots Elliot

Work Text:

The cool September air of Timberline, Oregon, hangs heavy with the scent of pine and impending chaos. Boog stands frozen, a hulking monument of terror, as Shaw's rifle barrel gleams in the afternoon sun, pointed directly at his chest. The metallic glint is a cold, final star in a sky that is rapidly darkening. It's not the fear of the shot that grips Boog, but the terror of the moment—the realization that his new, strange life is about to end, not with a bang, but with a hunter’s final, mocking grin. He sees a flash of movement, a blur of fur and antlers.

Suddenly, a loud, sharp crack echoes through the trees, not the pop-pop of a pellet gun but the deafening boom of a hunting rifle. Boog's breath catches in his throat as the sound rips through the air. The rifle is still pointed at him, yet the world seems to have tilted on its axis. He looks down, and his blood runs cold. A crimson stain blossoms on the chest of his new best friend, a dark, spreading flower against the light tan of Elliot's fur.

Elliot, who had launched himself in front of Boog, stumbles back, his eyes wide with a mixture of shock and pain. His gangly body sways precariously before collapsing. The white-tailed deer hits the ground with a sickening thud, a small cough escaping his lips. A single tear tracks down Boog’s face, a silent river of grief he has never known.

"Elliot!" he roars, a sound so primal it shakes the very leaves from the trees.

The shot shatters something inside Boog. The fear that had paralyzed him evaporates, replaced by a pure, unadulterated rage. He sees red, a blinding fury that eclipses the forest, the sun, and the man who stands before him, still holding the smoking rifle. Shaw, a man feared by all, stands paralyzed, his eyes wide with a different kind of terror. This isn't the lumbering, docile bear he's been hunting. This is a force of nature, an ancient, vengeful spirit embodied in 900 pounds of snarling muscle and fur.

A ferocious, guttural roar erupts from Boog's throat, a sound so terrifying it makes Shaw drop his rifle. The bear is on him in a flash, pinning the hunter to the ground with a single, mighty paw. Boog's claws are unsheathed, sharp as daggers, and his teeth are bared in a snarl of pure fury. The hunter's face, once a mask of smug satisfaction, is now a portrait of stark terror. He tries to scream, but only a pathetic squeak escapes his lips. He can smell the bear's hot, angry breath, feel the earth tremble beneath them. Boog roars again, a deep, booming sound that echoes through the valley.

It's a roar of grief, of love, of a friendship that has just been tested in the most brutal way imaginable. His paw presses harder against Shaw's chest, a silent promise of what's to come. He pulls back, his eyes still burning with rage, and then, in a move that surprises even himself, he doesn't tear Shaw apart. Instead, he grabs the dropped rifle and uses the gun's own strap to tie the poacher up.

"You don't get to kill him," Boog growls, his voice a low, terrifying rumble. "You don't get to hurt him. He's my friend."

The words hang in the air, a declaration of a bond that is both new and profoundly strong. Boog turns, leaving the terrified Shaw tied to a tree, and rushes back to Elliot, his mind a whirlwind of fear and hope. He kneels beside his friend, the large, gentle giant he has become, now dwarfed by the small, still body of the deer who just saved his life.
