Albeit Awkward (2006)

Summary:

September 24, 2006, 3878 Alonzo Avenue (living room), San Diego, California

Drake surprises Josh after forgetting his birthday

Work Text:

The air inside the living room feels thick with unspoken frustration. Josh, sprawled on the living room couch, barely registers the soft glow of the table lamp beside him. His fingers idly tap the worn fabric, a rhythm of annoyance echoing the incessant, tinny barks from Megan's virtual pet game. Toby, the digital dog, demands attention, but Josh's mind is miles away, still replaying the sting of Drake's forgetfulness. He glares at the small, pixelated creature on the screen, wishing he could silence it.

Suddenly, the front door creaks open. Drake steps into the living room, a nervous energy clinging to him like static electricity. His eyes, usually brimming with carefree confidence, dart towards Josh, a flicker of genuine remorse softening their edges. He holds something behind his back, a crinkling sound betraying its presence. Josh, still lost in his brooding, doesn't immediately notice him.

"Hey, Josh," Drake says, his voice softer than usual.

Josh finally looks up, his expression a mixture of surprise and residual anger. "What do you want?" he grumbles in a flat tone.

Drake takes a deep breath, then pulls his hands from behind his back, revealing two crisp, golden tickets. Not just any tickets, but two shimmering passes adorned with a familiar, iconic silhouette. Josh's eyes widen, his jaw dropping as he reads the bold lettering. His heart leaps into his throat, a sudden, overwhelming wave of disbelief washing over him.

"You got me tickets to Oprah!" Josh screams, the words tearing from his lungs in a joyous explosion. He scrambles off the couch, the virtual pet forgotten.

Drake grins, a genuine, relieved smile spreading across his face. "Hug me, brotha!" he exclaims, opening his arms wide.

Josh lunges forward, wrapping Drake in a bone-crushing embrace. It’s a tight hug, filled with all the hurt, the forgiveness, and the pure, unadulterated joy of the past few hours. His face, still flushed with excitement, pulls back slightly. Without a second thought, Josh grabs Drake's cheeks, his fingers pressing into the soft skin, and plants a sloppy, enthusiastic kiss directly on Drake's lips.

Drake freezes, his eyes wide with shock, a faint "Ew!" escaping his throat.

Just then, a small, mischievous head pops up from behind the back of the couch. Megan, her eyes gleaming with wicked delight, steps away from her virtual pet toy, but her hand clutches a small digital camera. A bright flash illuminates the room, capturing the exact moment of their brotherly, albeit awkward, kiss.

"That'll be good blackmail," she announces, a triumphant smirk playing on her lips, as Toby the virtual dog barks happily from her hand.
