Company logos, Playtime co presents
The opening shot is a fade in to the sunrise over everyone’s houses in the valley, with a zoom in on Dogday’s house through his window as we can see he’s sleeping until his alarm clock rings, then he wakes up with a smile, turning it off and jumping out of bed
He washes his face and brushes his teeth, getting ready for the day as the opening credits play, and as he opens the door and runs out, the sky fades into the “The Smiling critters movie” Logo
Dogday goes around the neighborhood while singing the song “Smiling family” which is like ‘the family madrigal’ from Encanto or ‘bikini bottom day’ from SpongeBob, where he sings the main part but the other 6 critters get verses to introduce themselves and explain who they are and what they’re like as well as getting ready for the smiling day festival which is an important and historical event to celebrate the day smiling valley was discovered by the great Unziro Zirosyx, their founder and creator of this gorgeous world
At the end of the song everything for the party is ready and they keep singing, but suddenly, Dogday asks where Catnap is cause he's supposed to be here too, by now at least
Catnap was sleeping in soundly and Dogday bursts into his place
Dogday is angry and yells at him, saying that he KNEW the smiling festival was today and he slept in anyway, Catnap yells that he NEVER lets him sleep in and he didn’t even WANT to go to the stupid party, Dogday says that if all Catnap wants to do is sleep, maybe he shouldn’t be a smiling critter anymore cause he’s USELESS! (Which he didn’t really mean)
Catnap is hurt by this and takes his pendant off and throws it at Dogday’s face, then goes out to cry and sulk by himself in the woods
Eventually he realizes maybe Dogday had a point, and gets up to go apologize for missing the festival, but while he’s doing that he gets CAT-NAPPED by Ulrike the evil sorceress
Cut to Dogday and the others having the party not noticing Catnap isn’t there except for Dogday who starts to feel bad and plans to apologize to him after the party
Everyone slowly recognizes the party and their friend group as a whole isn’t complete without Catnap so they go to look for him
Dogday finds a note from Ulrike saying that “I have your Cat friend, You little pests have 3 days to come and get him or I'm turning him to stone forever
Hugs n Kisses, Ulrike”
Dogday worriedly tells the others, and they all agree that they will go on a quest to save their friend with a little preparation montage
They they go through a traveling montage and sing a song called “Jammin along” where they all have random lines and sing the chorus together a-la ‘into the thick of it’ from backyardigans
Meanwhile Ulrike has Catnap in a cage and is mocking and teasing him about being useless and the least liked critter by the others
She then sings a villain song called “Cold as stone” a-la ‘open up your eyes’ from the mlp movie or ‘main-hoon Romeo’ from roadside Romeo(Which isn’t a villain song but sounds oddly like one)
She then leaves Catnap to cry in his cage while she goes and prepares for the other critter’s arrival
Cut back to the critters who have set up camp for the night and are discussing their game plan about what to do when they arrive at Ulrike’s place atop the evil mountain, planning to take her down with their magic necklaces
But all Dogday can think about is how much he misses Catnap so he goes away for some alone time and onto a nearby cliff
Him and Catnap sing “Apogee” a distance duet about how much they miss each other a-la ‘this grill is not a home’ from SpongeBob over a montage of memories of them together. (Playing together, hanging out, Catnap sleeping on Dogday’s lap, them hugging, saying they’ll be best friends forever, etc etc.)
At the end of the song Dogday cries, and Crafty comes to comfort him and reassure them that they WILL get Catnap back. Dogday thanks her and she takes him back to the Campsite
The next day they finally reach Ulrike’s palace, on top of an eeevil mountain that was always surrounded by dark purple clouds, magical clouds that smelled of blackberries and rained red wine
They break in and go through a little scooby doo montage of them getting chased by skeletons and ghosts and stuff like that before finally reaching Ulrike’s throne room, where she’s sitting on her throne like a girlboss and Catnap is in a hanging cage next to her
She asks for their magic pendants in exchange for Catnap’s freedom, and Dogday of course refuses, but then she takes Catnap out of his cage and holds him by the throat and threatens to turn him to stone, so the others offer their pendants, leading to Dogday giving up and offering his
Ulrike takes all the pendants and transforms into her ultimate evil queen form, then lets Catnap go so he can breathe and the other critters ask for him back now that they gave her the pendants
Uh oh, Ulrike betrays them and turns Catnap to stone anyway, and lowers the statue down to the ground
She then mockingly waves goodbye and leaves the palace to start her conquering of the world
Dogday goes to Catnap and breaks down crying, hugging him and crying while the other critters sadly stand around, mourning the loss of their friend
Dogday starts to sing “You are my sunshine” To Catnap, which is his favorite song, over and over
On the second time the other critters hold hands and start to join in one by one, Crafty being first
The power of everyone’s friendship de-stone-ifies Catnap, and Dogday and him embrace and say they’re sorry and that they love each other as friends/brothers and it’s all sappy and sweet
(But in the director's cut they KISS instead because I’M the director >:) )
They then realize they don’t need the necklaces to be smiling critters, because the power of friendship was inside them all along!
So they leave and use their regained powers to blast Ulrike’s bitchy @$$ and turn HER to stone, and all cheer and hug and Dogday gives Catnap his necklace back and says he’s sorry again, Catnap accepts it and rejoins the smiling critters
Cut to the next day where they finally get to have the smiling day festival(/celebration of taking down Ulrike) a few days late and sing a reprise of “smiling family” this time with Catnap getting his own verse
The movie ends with Catnap and Dogday sitting together on the roof of Dogday’s house and watching the sunset as the credits start to roll
At the end Ulrike’s statue shell starts to crack, teasing a sequel
(That never came because the critters were a flop in-universe)
