Work Text:
— The world seemed much too large for this lone flower to bloom amongst the others, yet its roots have already begun to set the foundation.
At the age of 5, Jungwon was still too young to fully comprehend the world of royalty and its strict intricacies. Amidst lessons tailored for children, the older prince — Heeseung — was free to mingle with Yeonjun, the son of one of the King’s bravest knights, and Beomgyu, the son of a close aristocrat friend to the Royal Family.
While on breaks from their lessons, Heeseung would spend time with them, playing games and running around the castle. Though his older brother was kind enough to include him in such activities, Jungwon still felt jealous over the fact that his brother had what they called “friends”.
After one afternoon lesson, their tutor praised them for another job well done before dismissing the children for their afternoon tea time. Ushered to one of the castle’s grand gardens, Heeseung and Jungwon sat by the tables, maids serving them with biscuits and juice.
“Yeonjun and Beomgyu are coming over again today, Heeseung.” the tutor says warmly, “Will you be playing again?”
“Maybe!” Heeseung beams after sipping a little juice.
The tutor chuckles, patting the older prince’s head. Heeseung then places his hands on the glass table, leaning forward, “Jungwon, want to join us?”
Jungwon hums, little fingers playing with the teacup in front of him. He glances at his older brother, tilting his head as if to ask “really?”. Heeseung nods his head, smiling warmly as he speaks.
“Of course! Yeonjun and Beomgyu like to have you around just as much as I do!”
The younger prince giggles, smiling widely. The happy moment is, however, broken when the tutor coos and places a gentle hand on Jungwon’s head. She lightly dusts off a biscuit crumb from his cheek.
“I’m afraid the little princes will have to skip on this, Heeseung.” she explains, “Today is his art day. The Queen has specifically requested for him to paint with me today.”
“Aw, that’s unfortunate. There’s next time, right?” Heeseung pouts.
“Of course, my prince.” the tutor chuckles, heart melting at the sight of the younger prince on the verge of tears, “We can paint a funny picture of Heeseung and Riki if you’d like, little prince.”
Jungwon stifles a sniffle, nodding his head and smiling softly. The idea of painting his older and younger brother in a comical scenario was better than sitting in one of the castle’s study rooms, being taught how to walk and speak in a royal fashion.
“Can we also paint horses? The ones in the knight’s quarters? And roses! And cakes!” the younger prince claps his hands.
Heeseung laughs at his brother’s excitement, prompting another amused chuckle from their tutor. “Of course, of course! Whatever you’d like.”
— Yes, the world was still too large for the flower, but perhaps, in time, it would be ready to bloom and join the other flowers in the garden.
— The flower began to bloom, a little bud innocently staring into a vast world; fortunately, another small flower prepares to spring by its side.
While Heeseung was whisked away to study a higher level of royal lessons, Jungwon had put himself in his previous shoes; gone were his basic etiquette lessons and painting sessions, now replaced with even more specific manner classes and brief moral and history sessions. As Heeseung grew a year older, he also became busier and spent more time with Yeonjun and Beomgyu. Jungwon was just thankful he still had Riki to keep him company.
It was, however, different from having friends the way Heeseung did.
“But I don’t want to read anymore!” Riki wails, crossing his arms in a pout.
Jungwon laughs at his younger brother, reaching over to flip a page on the book Riki was supposed to read.
“Look! This is easy to read, Riki! You can play after anyway. That’s what Mrs. Yoo used to tell Heeseung and me.” he says.
Riki groans, shaking his head before looking out the window. There, in the garden, are Heeseung, Yeonjun, and Beomgyu, seated in a circle on the grass as they study a child-friendly map of the entire land the Royal Family ruled over.
“Why can’t I be with them?” Riki protests.
Jungwon can only laugh, being able to relate to his sentiments as he asked the same thing a year ago. Mrs. Yoo gently pats the youngest prince’s head and smiles, “You’ll be able to join Heeseung in a few years, sweetheart. For now, your Father and Mother want you to focus on these lessons.”
Another grumble escapes the youngest prince, prompting an amused sigh from the tutor. Jungwon chuckles in kind, tugging on Mrs. Yoo’s sleeve. When the older woman turns to him, the prince asks.
“I will still take my lessons and behave nicely, but when will I be able to make and meet friends like Heeseung? He had friends when he was my age…”
Mrs. Yoo smiles, gently fixing the prince’s hair. “Not to worry, my dear, as I believe you’ll be able to make friends in no time. It’ll come.” she explains warmly.
Jungwon nods, offering a toothy grin before turning his attention back to the book in his hands. As a seven-year-old, lessons weren’t extremely technical and heavy and would often be composed of fictional stories meant to teach a moral lesson or set an example.
Today’s particular lesson was about an adventurous prince who made friends with everyone he met because he had a kind and compassionate heart. Smiling to himself, Jungwon immersed himself in the story, imagining his future to be similar.
— The flower may have been just a small bud for now, but its petals anticipated the day it would unfold and welcome the world into its view.
— The flower finally blooms — still small in comparison to the other flowers in the garden but very much vibrant on its own. Beside this small one, another flower blooms in surprise, though quite somber.
The prince begins more intricate lessons and exposure to royal events and activities to be attended with his parents and brothers. When he was younger, Jungwon did not understand why the King and Queen were always dressed up, meeting people in the castle and hosting fancy events in the ballroom. Now, he learns that these formalities were meant to build and maintain alliances — or friendships, as Heeseung would put it. Festivals and other ceremonies were also meant to be held for the sake of the common-folk.
A small gala was going to be held in the evening to commemorate some sort of anniversary — Jungwon doesn’t quite remember the details — but the servants hustle about, getting the prince ready for the event. The morning goes by as usual, with breakfast and a few lessons held. In the afternoon, with a few hours left on the clock, Jungwon decides to roam around the castle in search of either Heeseung or Riki.
He sees a figure slightly, assuming it to be his older brother. When he playfully pushes the figure’s back, he is, however, taken aback at the surprised and puzzled expression on the person’s face as he turns around.
A gasp of shock escapes the prince’s lips as he realizes that this was most definitely not his older brother, but a complete stranger who seemed to be the same age as Heeseung.
“I apologize, I thought you were my brother.” Jungwon frowns, feeling heat rise to his cheeks.
The stranger blinks a few times before flashing a lopsided grin. As if suddenly remembering something, the stranger clears his throat and politely bows. When he stands straight again, his grin is still plastered on his face.
“The prince isn’t at fault. I’m sorry for causing confusion.” the young man says.
Jungwon tilts his head, “Are you…Heeseung’s friend? You don’t look like Yeonjun or Beomgyu…”
The other male smiles, “Oh, I’m not…quite friends with the prince yet. But I’m Jongseong.”
Formalities and the invisible division between royalty and non-royalty didn’t quite exist with children as Jongseong reaches his hand out. Jungwon recalls this gesture as what is called a “handshake”; smiling, he takes Jongseong’s hand and gives it a gentle shake.
“Jungwon. Prince Jungwon.” he giggles; at this very moment, Jungwon was filled with excitement.
“I know.” Jongseong grins, slowly letting go of the prince’s hand, “You have a pretty jacket. My mother would think so too.”
Jungwon twirls around, losing balance as he does so; this prompts a laugh from Jongseong. The prince flashes him a smile before responding, “Thank you. I…don’t know if it’s nice to ask but I’ve never seen you in the castle before. Are you Heeseung’s new friend? Or maybe Riki?”
Jungwon eyes Jongseong up and down — he isn’t dressed in luxurious attire like Heeseung and Riki, so he can’t be a prince from another kingdom. He isn’t dressed elegantly like Beomgyu, so he isn’t of nobility either. Was he like Yeonjun, son of one of the King’s knights, or another one of the servant’s children the Queen fondly brought into the castle every now and then?
As if reading his thoughts, Jongseong shifts from one foot to another, smiling sheepishly as he answers, “Neither. I’m…a servant?” he tries before looking away with flushed cheeks, “I’m Yeonjun’s younger brother.”
Jungwon shakes his head and reaches out to grab the older boy's hands, swinging them around in the same way Heeseung would do to Riki’s and his hands.
“I didn’t know Yeonjun had a younger brother. Neither he nor Heeseung mentioned it. Perhaps it wasn’t my business to know.”
Jongseong offers a more relaxed smile and nods his head. Encouraged, Jungwon continues to swing their interlocked hands, jumping about two times out of excitement before asking, “Will you train to be a knight as well? Oh, are you attending the ball?”
The other male smiles, nodding his head in the same enthusiastic manner as Jungwon.
“I’m still thinking about it.” he answers the first question, “And because of the ball, my father will be busy guarding you and your family, while my mother was asked to help decorate the place. The Queen allowed me to stay here since I could help my mother.”
Jungwon smiles at this, nodding at the male’s explanation, “So you can attend the ball too? Want to go together? I can introduce you to Heeseung and Riki!”
Jongseong’s cheeks flush once more at the sudden invitation, eyes wide that the prince was this friendly. “I…I don’t know if I’m allowed to.” he admits with a sheepish smile, “Those are for royalty and nobility.”
Jungwon’s lips protrude as he pouts, a dejected expression on his face. If he were older, perhaps he would have insisted on having Jongseong join him for the ball, but alas, a child like him was not exactly accustomed to making friends.
Refusing to let the opportunity slip, Jungwon lightens up and smiles, “If you can’t join the ball, let’s play first! It’s happening tonight, so we still have time! We can go to the garden where Heeseung always plays!”
“Are you sure?” Jongseong asks with uncertainty.
Jungwon nods, “Yes! It’s safe, and well…I’ve never really played with anyone other than my brothers and his friends so…let’s go! Please!”
“I can’t say ‘no’ to the prince himself, can I?” Jongseong chuckles.
Jungwon lets out an excited squeal before running off and pulling Jongseong along, their hands still holding onto each other. Once they arrive in the garden, Jungwon begins to excitedly list all the activities and games he would play with Heeseung and the rest. Time seems to fly by as Jongseong indulges in his whims, ticking off each of those activities as if they had a to-do-list.
Childish and boisterous giggles fill the garden as the two children play with full-blasted energy. The fun, however, comes to a halt when the two children decide to chase each other around the vast garden in an infinite round of tag. Jungwon trips as the heel of his shoe catches onto a small crack on the pavement, hands and knees taking the brunt of the impact since he was wearing shorts. Jongseong watches in horror, rushing over in an instant.
“Prince Jungwon!” he exclaims, kneeling down just as Jungwon adjusts himself into a sitting position on the ground.
Fear floods into the boy’s eyes as he catches sight of the abrasion on the prince’s knee, red and angry in comparison to his white clothes. Contrary to what he expects, Jungwon does not cry but instead looks at his wound with curiosity.
His attention shifts to Jongseong, offering a brave smile as he tries to reassure him, “I’m fine, don’t worry.”
Jongseong’s frown deepens, “This is my fault…they’ll punish me now.”
Jungwon can tell his newfound friend is in panic, so he gently places his hand on the older male’s and smiles, “You won’t. I’ll make sure to tell Mother it was an accident!”
Jongseong smiles a little, nodding his head. He is about to speak when one of the maids arrives to call Jungwon into the castle after minutes of searching for the child. To her horror, she sees both Jungwon and Jongseong on the ground, the older child hunched over the prince’s knee.
A gasp escapes her lips as she rushes over, swiftly scooping the prince into her arms. “My dear prince!” she exclaims before turning to the other boy, “What have you done?”
Neither Jongseong or Jungwon get to respond because the maid is already leading them into the castle. It isn’t long before they both stand in the King and Queen’s presence, timid and nervous eyes glued to the carpeted floor. Jungwon spares a glance at Jongseong — the boy is afraid, he can tell, because he makes a similar expression to that of Heeseung or Riki when they caused a ruckus.
Running over to his parents, the young prince pleads, “Please don’t punish Jongseong! It wasn’t his fault, I promise!”
Jongseong stares at Jungwon in surprise, not bothering to close his mouth as it hangs open. The Queen smiles gently at the young boy before turning to her son. The King does the same before speaking in a soft voice.
“No one is going to be punished, but we’d like to know what happened.”
Jongseong hesitates, and when the King nods in encouragement, he continues, “We bumped into each other in the hallways and decided to play before the ball tonight.”
“I just want to make friends like Heeseung does…” Jungwon admits, getting teary eyed at the prospect of getting in trouble for the first time in his life, “Jongseong’s my friend…”
“Of course, my dear son.” the King says, “Jongseong is your friend, and you are also his friend. It’s alright to play, but remember to be careful next time. We don’t want anyone getting hurt, alright?”
“Yes.” Jungwon offers a small smile before pointing at Jongseong, “Is he forgiven too?”
The King chuckles, “Of course.”
Jongseong looks down at the floor, but a small smile plays at his lips.
Later on, when evening comes and the ball is about to start, Jungwon spots Jongseong down the hall near the entrance of the ballroom. Running towards him, the prince smiles.
“Jongseong!” he beams.
Jongseong looks at the younger, bowing with a smile, “Prince Jungwon.”
The young boy pouts his lip, looking at his friend with innocence, “I know you can’t join the ball for now, but we can…play together again next time?”
Jongseong nods, flashing a toothier grin this time. “If the prince wishes so, then we will.” he declares.
Jungwon giggles before throwing his little arms around the young boy. Jongseong’s taken aback, already capable of knowing that the royal children — the prince at that — is not someone he should be hugging. But he is also still a child, and there is still a child-like innocence in his heart.
So, he hugs the prince back, laughing with him when the younger exclaims with a small “yay”.
— The radiant flower tilts towards the somber one — their gravitation towards each other is yet to bloom in full.
— Both the radiant flower and the somber one steadily grow in the garden, slowly catching up to the older, larger flowers around them. The radiant one mingles with several other brightly colored roses sprouting beside it, while the somber flower begins to grow thorns.
Years later, the prince is happy to have established his own friendships, namely with two princes from a closely allied kingdom — Prince Sunoo and Prince Taehyun. Along with this was Jungwon’s still-lasting friendship with Jongseong, the boy who he met from before; the young man, now around 14 years old, had begun training for knighthood just like his father and older brother.
“Don’t be ridiculous, Sunoo.” Taehyun says, taking a sip from his juice, “Riki or Jungwon aren’t going to be heir to the throne — Heeseung will.”
Despite being fairly young, Taehyun was already maturely intelligent. Sunoo, though just as intelligent, was a bit more imaginative.
“But imagine what it would be like if Riki was the firstborn!” Sunoo chuckles.
Jungwon listens to his two friends discuss the matter, smiling when Taehyun looks perplexed. “Either way,” Jungwon joins the conversation, “Riki isn’t keen on being king. He says he’s perfectly fine being a prince.”
“And you? Do you want to be king?” Sunoo asks.
The prince shakes his head, chuckling, “Not really. It would be…nice, but I wouldn’t say it’s something I need to achieve.”
Taehyun nods, taking a bite from the biscuits prepared for them before speaking, “Heeseung seems to be the one being prepared for the throne anyway.”
Jungwon nods in agreement. “He spends a lot of time in Father’s study. But not to worry. He spends his free time practicing sword-fighting with Yeonjun and Jongseong these days.” Jungwon states.
“Surprised he’s allowed to hold a sword.” Sunoo jokes.
“Of course!” Jungwon laughs, “We’re all somehow supposed to be knowledgeable in at least sword-fighting! Maybe you’ll start your training next year.”
Sunoo grimaces at the thought; Taehyun would probably be excited for that, but he was more of the bookish type, preferring to read and write in his own castle’s library, surrounded by knowledge and intellect.
“Where is Jongseong anyway?” Sunoo asks, “You guys are always together.”
A blush on Jungwon’s cheeks doesn’t go unnoticed, and Sunoo ends up smiling cheekily while Taehyun’s lips quirk into a slight smirk. While it was common knowledge within the castle staff and Jungwon’s family that Jongseong was one of his closest friends, only these two princes — as well as Jungwon’s brothers — knew about the little crush he had on the knight-to-be.
When it started, he wasn’t really sure, but perhaps a now-better understanding of the world around him and how human interaction worked contributed to such a blossoming feeling.
“He’s probably with Heeseung right now.” Jungwon says softly with a shrug, “By this time, I’d assume my brother is practicing his swordsmanship.”
The afternoon spent with the two other princes continues pleasantly, with the three friends catching up on various aspects of their life. They stroll around the garden later on, talking about the new flowers that were planted. Before the night could creep in, however, Taehyun and Sunoo had to begin their trips back to their own kingdoms.
After having just finished dinner and getting changed into his clothes for the night, Jungwon opens the door to his room, glancing around the hallway. He isn’t really looking for anyone in particular, but when he sees Heeseung and Jongseong talking to each other just outside the older prince’s room, he grins.
“Psst!” Jungown calls, catching the attention of both males.
Heeseung smiles warmly at his brother, “Jungwon. Shouldn’t you be getting ready for bed?”
The younger prince raises an eyebrow, “As with you, Heeseung.”
Jongseong chuckles at their little exchange, and Jungwon hopes it isn’t obvious that he feels butterflies in his stomach. Heeseung grins wider at his brother’s words, nodding his head in what seems to be a silent understanding.
“Well, I’ll leave you two to catch up while I prepare for bed.” Heeseung laughs, patting Jongseong’s shoulder before turning to the younger prince, “But don’t stay up too late, Jungwon! You need to sleep as well.”
“Yes, brother dearest.” Jungwon chuckles.
The older prince smiles and waves at his brother before heading back inside his bedroom. Jongseong fixes an easy-going smile on his lips, footsteps light as he approaches the younger male.
“Heeseung’s right. Shouldn’t you be in bed by now?” he teases.
Jungwon shrugs, gesturing to the large windows that line the hallway of the living quarters. “Felt like watching the stars. Care to join me?” he says.
“Always.” Jongseong responds.
The two grin at each other before walking over to the large windows, sitting on the carpeted floor of the hallway as they fix their eyes on the starry sky. Right now, Jungwon wasn’t the prince — he was just a young man, sharing another quiet and comfortable moment with his best friend. Jongseong was the same, thinking nothing too much of this little bubble they were in, simply happy that the prince enjoyed his company just as much as he liked having Jungwon around.
“Jongseong?” the prince softly speaks up.
“Hm?” the knight-to-be responds.
“Do you…” Jungwon tilts his head, eyes glued to the stars, “...ever wonder if the stars are lonely?”
Jongseong falls into a thoughtful silence, subconsciously pouting his lip as he mentally strings his words together. He spares a quick glance at the prince before following his gaze back to the starry sky.
“I don’t think they’re lonely.” he answers, “A single star has a lot of other stars around it, so it’s like it has a lot of friends.”
“But having a lot of people around you doesn’t mean they’re your friends.” Jungwon pouts; somehow, he puts himself in the place of a star — surrounded by people, but not quite friends with everyone.
Jongseong hums pensively, nodding his head before adding, “But there’s at least one person who always watches the stars. It’s like someone watching over you. That doesn’t sound so lonely.”
Jungwon turns to face his friend, smiling amusedly. “Did you pick that up from the books in the library?” he chuckles, lightly hitting the elder’s arm.
Jongseong laughs, eyes wide as he shakes his head, “Of course not! I came up with that.”
Jungwon smiles, and Jongseong feels himself drowning in the warmth of such eyes. The prince stifles a laugh, trying not to make too much noise. The little giggle that does escape him sends Jongseong’s heart into overdrive, and he has to mentally slap himself to remain calm.
“You put other princes to shame with such wise words, Jongseong.” Jungwon chuckles.
Jongseong fondly smiles, reaching a hand up to softly pinch Jungwon’s cheek. “I spend a lot of time with you and your brothers after all.” he grins.
The young prince then rests his head on Jongseong’s shoulder, eyes returning to the stars above. He watches them glimmer in the dark sky, unaware that his knight-to-be friend is watching him in a similar manner.
Perhaps it was better for Jungwon to not be aware; if he saw the way Jongseong was looking at him, he would melt on the spot.
Their little moment doesn’t last too long as a voice gently breaks the silence. “My dears, you both should be in bed.” the voice says.
Upon realizing the Queen was now there, the two young individuals are quick to their feet, standing up straight. Jongseong is the first to kneel, apologetically speaking up, “My apologies, Your Highness.”
The Queen smiles at the young man, “Jongseong, sweetheart, stand up. It’s alright.”
Jongseong does as he is instructed, still quite shy with flushed cheeks. Jungwon offers a small smile before turning to his mother. “Sorry, Mother. I wanted to watch the stars as usual. Jongseong just kept me company so I wouldn’t be lonely.”
The Queen chuckles warmly, nodding her head in understanding. “That’s wonderful, sweetheart, but it’s already nighttime, so both you and Jongseong need to wind down and get ready to sleep.” she says.
Jungwon frowns, and Jongseong can’t help but smile at his friend. The Queen hums, her smile unfading as she approaches the two. She puts a hand on their shoulders, giving them a squeeze. “There’s always tomorrow, children. For now, you must get to bed.” she continues.
The two young individuals nod, earning another smile from the Queen. She gently says goodnight to Jongseong who bows at her and waves at the prince. Jungwon smiles as he walks back towards the knight’s chambers before turning to his mother with a bright smile, “Goodnight, Mother.”
“Goodnight, sweetheart.” the Queen kisses the prince’s forehead before gently ushering him to his bedroom.
When the prince enters and gently shuts the door, the Queen smiles, eyes now gazing at the end of the hallway where Jongseong went off to not too long ago.
— Though not as experienced and seasoned like the fully-bloomed flowers around them, the radiant one and the somber one begin to see a new world.
— The distance between the radiant flower and the somber one continues to shrink. The leaves on their stems reach out in an attempt to touch, just like a pair of lovers’ fingers connecting at the tips.
Jungwon has a year left before he turns 18; that would be the age he fully becomes an adult and embraces his full-blown duty as prince. Heeseung, already past 18, has begun aiding their father with his kingly duties while Riki continues his lessons — though admittedly, Riki is much more focused on swordsmanship, perhaps desiring to lead the kingdom’s knights one day.
And speaking of knights was Jongseong. Now of legal age, the prince’s friend was officially appointed as a royal knight; he was skilled for his age, having a natural talent for the sword paired with his quick wit and intellect. He, along with Yeonjun and other knights, accompany the prince and the royal family whenever they visit other kingdoms or go on trips.
Jungwon has always prepared herself for this moment — a time when he would be the one perpetually dressed up, going here and there to smile and make pleasantries with people. It still doesn’t stop him from being overwhelmed every now and then, and he often finds himself weary after every obligation.
Neither Jungwon nor Jongseong know when it started or how, but their friendship from childhood had blossomed into something more — not quite a romance, but definitely deeper than the child-like bond they had years ago. The knight was Jungwon’s comfort zone; he was someone he could be himself with and not the perfect prince the people needed to see. Jungwon was the softness and gentleness that Jongseong needed whenever knighthood became too rough and exhausting.
The two balanced each other out, perfect chemistry unlike any other.
Amidst the busy schedules and obligations, Jongseong finds himself with free time in his hands since the King allowed him to have a day off. He immediately makes a beeline for Jungwon’s personal study room, knocking on the door. Soobin, the prince’s personal adviser, opens the door and gestures for the knight to come in.
“Soobin.” Jongseong grins at the other male before turning to the prince, “Prince Jungwon.”
“Hi, Jongseong. How can I help you?” Jungwon smiles as he sets his pen on the table.
“Are you busy?”
“Not…anymore.” he laughs, glancing over at Soobin, “Why?”
Jongseong smiles, nodding his head towards the window behind Jungwon. “Let’s go out.” he announces, “You need to get some fresh air.”
Jungwon’s eyes beam extremely brightly as he stands from where he sits, startling both Jongseong and Soobin. He leans forward on the table, eyeing his personal adviser knowingly
“Soobin…do you think I can have the rest of the afternoon off?”
Soobin tilts his head, pursing his lips as he thinks. “Hmm, I don’t see why not. There isn’t much to do right now.” he answers.
Jungwon grins, “Riki’s out with Kai, and Heeseung is…doing whatever. I would like to spend the rest of my day resting as well.”
“Yes, but I do have apprehensions about going out.” the adviser states, “You both are aware that someone attempted to harm Heeseung and Riki when they were out the other day? It’s probably because there have been rising tensions between kingdoms, but…”
Jongseong smiles at Soobin, putting a hand on the adviser’s shoulder. “I’ll be accompanying him, Soobin. I’ll make sure he’s safe, don’t worry. I am a knight, right?”
“I know.” Soobin nods, sighing, “Just make sure to stay close by, alright?”
“I promise.”
Before Jungwon knows it, he is walking side by side with Jongseong, basking in the afternoon sun as they stroll around the town’s plaza. The common folk greet the prince politely, and he returns the gesture with kindness. The knight is by his side, smiling fondly as usual as if Jungwon was the sun himself.
“How has knighthood been for you?” Jungwon asks when they get to a less crowded place.
Jongseong hums, throwing a side-eye while smiling, “It’s alright. It does get tiring to be so physical all the time, but I enjoy it. It’s fun.”
“That’s good to hear.” Jungwon hums, “Are they treating you well? I know it must be difficult being so young in their ranks.”
“They’re alright.” Jongseong assures his friend, “We all get along, and the older knights are good mentors to Yeonjun, Sunghoon, and me. Riki drops by every now and then.”
Jungwon finds himself admiring his friend, an endeared smile on his lips. Jongseong catches him staring, raising an eyebrow and smirking as he decides to tease a bit.
“What? Admiring me too much?” he laughs.
Jungwon chuckles, shaking his head in denial. The knight then pats the prince’s head before asking, “How about you? Heeseung tells me you get bored of kingdom visitations unless it’s to Sunoo or Taehyun’s residence.”
“Yes, that’s true.” the prince starts, “Taehyun and Sunoo are my friends after all.”
Jongseong then takes Jungwon to a nearby bakery where he buys some pastries — the prince initially insisted on being the one to pay, but the knight was stubborn and made sure the baker only took his money. They snack on the pastries at the nearby plaza, seated on the benches as they watch the common folk bustle about.
Jungwon has just finished his pastry when a shop full of flowers catches his attention; without much thought, he gets up and prepares to dash towards the shop.
Jongseong was feeding a nearby bird, but out of the corner of his eye, he noticed the prince’s movements. His reflexes are quick and polished through training, so it isn’t a surprise that he manages to hold onto Jungwon’s wrist just before he sprints off. Jungwon yelps in surprise, turning to look at his friend with wide, confused eyes.
Jongseong gets up, looking at the younger warmly as his lips quirk into a smirk. “Didn’t you promise Soobin you’d stay close by?” he says, “Don’t go running off without telling me.”
Jungwon sheepishly chuckles, nodding as he glances at Jay’s grip on her wrist, “Sorry, I got carried away. There’s a really pretty flower shop over there.”
The knight lets go of the prince’s wrist, chuckling as he nods his head. “Come on then, Prince Jungwon.” he teases.
“I specifically told you to call me ‘Jungwon’, not the whole title.” he responds, laughing when the knight sticks his tongue out.
The pair then make small talk with the quaint flower shop’s owner, learning about the background of the shop and such details. The prince purchases a few bouquets for his brothers and a few to send to his friends in the other kingdoms. While deciding from the wide variety of flower crowns, a few little children run to the shop and yell, “It’s the prince! Wow!”
Jongseong laughs at their excitement, nudging Jungwon’s arm to get his attention. The prince swivels, eyes wide with pleasant surprise at the children squealing and excitedly waving their hands.
“Hello.” Jungwon greets them, kneeling down to their height.
One little girl beams, “Are you buying flower crowns? Those are so pretty! The pink and white one will suit you!”
“Really?” Jungwon chuckles, “How about I buy some for you children? Pick anything you want.”
“Are you sure?” the children squeal, jumping up and down in excitement.
“Yes, I’m sure.” the prince says.
The children excitedly squeal before pointing at the flower crowns of their color choice, clapping their hands happily when the prince pays and gently places each one of their heads.
One of the little boys then turns to Jongseong and shyly asks, “Mister Knight, are we allowed to hug the prince to say thank you?”
Jungwon looks amused as he waits for the other male’s response, internally melting at the warm expression that rests on Jongseong’s face as he looks at the children with gentle eyes. Lifting his eyebrows, the knight turns to the prince, directing the same warm gaze at him.
“You’re allowed to as long as the prince is fine with it.”
Jungwon feels his cheeks flush at the gaze Jongseong sends his way, attempting to hide it with a dismissive chuckle. He turns to the children, nodding as he opens his arms for them.
“Of course you can.” Jungwon says, and the children squeal and give the prince quick hugs and “thank you’s”.
When they leave, Jungwon turns to see Jongseong already smiling at him, expression a mixture of fondness and teasing. “What is it now, my dearest knight?” Jungwon laughs.
Jongseong shrugs, taking one flower crown from Jungwon’s hands and gently placing it on the prince’s head, “Nothing,” he smiles, “my prince.”
“I’m buying you a flower crown of your own so you can show Heeseung and the knights. I command you to wear it during your duty.”
“Please don’t.”
When the pair arrive at the castle, Jongseong escorts the prince back to his room so that he could rest a little before heading to the dining hall. They stop outside the door of Jungwon’s room, standing in the familiar hallway where they would gaze at their stars through the large windows when they were children.
“Thank you for accompanying me, Jongseong.” Jungwon starts, “I had fun.”
The knight smiles, nodding his head in acknowledgement. “As did I, Prince Jungwon.” he says the name teasingly once more.
Jungwon rolls his eyes, prompting a “that’s not very prince-like” comment from his friend. He then playfully slaps the knight’s arm, to which Jongseong responds with an overly dramatic gasp. The two share another round of boisterous laughter.
Jongseong then nods his head to the side and says, “I’ll go ahead now.”
“Alright, but before you go…” the prince says before reaching into the little pouch he carries around whenever he goes out into the town.
Jongseong watches, head tilted to the side in curiosity. It isn’t long before Jungwon pulls out a single-stemmed rose, offering it to his knight friend. “For you,” Jungwon smiles, “as a token of my gratitude for today.”
Jongseong laughs, “I’ve never seen royalty give flowers to a knight.”
“Jongseong.” Jungwon sighs, a pout on his lips as he gently waves the flower around.
The knight chuckles, gently taking the rose from him. The smile on his lips brings a grin back to the prince’s face as he nods his head.
“Thank you as well, Jungwon.” he says, and Jungwon isn’t sure if his cheeks are flaring up again.
The knight then excuses himself, reminding the prince not to be late for dinner lest he wants to be lectured by Heeseung again.
Jongseong takes a rest at the knights’ quarters, waiting for their own meal to be ready. He lays on his assigned bed, holding up the rose Jungwon had gifted him. His hold on the rose is extremely gentle, as if the flower were an actual representation of the prince’s heart and soul — something he’d soon realize he’d want to have.
— The somber flower continues to lean ever-so-slightly towards the radiant one, leaves further reaching out. Their leaves do eventually meet, the touch nothing more than a ghost-like caress.
— The wind brings the two flowers even closer, leaves swaying and brushing against each other as if they were lovers holding hands. Tangled up together, the two flowers seemed inseparable.
Now at the age of 19, Jungwon had become immersed in even more duties as a prince, obligations and responsibilities slowly piling up. It was no different from Riki and Heeseung who were also just as preoccupied. Thankfully, despite the looming obligations, there was something else to look forward to with this bigger step into the royal world.
The King and Queen had their own appointed personal guards, so in the same manner, the royal children were each appointed a personal guard when they reached the age of 19. Last year, Heeseung was ecstatic to have a childhood friend — Yeonjun — appointed as his guard.
For Jungwon, it seemed like a dream come true of sorts that his personal guard was none other than Jongseong, his closest friend.
While this meant that he would be by Jungwon’s side more often, it did not allow them to act the way they used to; they were no longer children, but rather, adults who were at the age that others expected them to behave properly — and for Jungwon, that meant “behave like a proper prince”.
It was evident to the prince that Jongseong was also doing his best to fulfill his role; it was obvious in the way he would act more “professional” in the presence of other royalty or nobility.
Needless to say, their comfortable friendship remained, and they would often find themselves revisiting their casual behavior when not in the presence of others.
Jungwon had returned from a trip he and Riki were sent to. They were with a few other advisers and knights, as well as Jongseong and Sunghoon; he was the knight to be appointed as Riki’s personal guard in the coming year. To “reward” them, the Queen gave them a free day from work; obviously, Riki decided that honing his swordsmanship with Sunghoon was his idea of a break.
Jungwon, on the other hand, requested for a trip outside the castle where he could feel the sun and enjoy the breeze; the Queen approved it, as long as he was accompanied by his personal guard.
Jongseong helps the prince get up on his horse, following right after. Jungwon gleefully circles his arms around the knight’s waist, exclaiming with an excited “lead the way!” that has the knight laughing in amusement. Jongseong then takes him to the field near the castle, filled with trees and all sorts of flowers — a quiet place for only the two of them.
Once they arrive, Jongseong gets off the horse first, reaching up to assist the prince. He gently places his hands on Jungwon’s waist, helping him clamber off the animal. The two venture further into the field, settling at their usual spot by the stream. Jongseong removes his jacket, setting it on the lush grass as he motions for the prince to sit. Jungwon does so, motioning for the knight to join. Though Jongseong hesitates, he eventually obeys, taking a seat next to his friend.
Jungwon shares some details from his recent trip, ranting about how the family of that kingdom was not friendly at all, and that he and Riki felt disrespected the entire time. Jongseong listened intently, comforting his friend and assuring him that once the King hears about it, it won’t happen again.
At some point into their conversation, Jungwon notices that the knight’s eyes are heavy, threatening to shut; being royalty was difficult, but he was certain that being a knight was just as tiring — it could even be harder since they’d have to be alert and on guard. Jungwon recalls that Jongseong once mentioned they had to sacrifice sleep every now and then.
After much negotiating and a little friendly arguing, Jongseong finds himself lying down, the prince gently cradling his head on his lap. The older male’s eyes are peacefully closed, soft humming and occasional singing escaping his lips as he finds rest in this exact moment. Jungwon looks down at his friend, taking in the features of his face.
Jay’s long eyelashes tickle the skin of his cheeks, and the little moles placed on specific parts of his face were still very visible. The prince softly runs his fingers through the knight’s hair while the other hand hovers above Jongseong’s face. Jungwon then taps the mole between the latter’s eyebrows, a smile forming on his lips as Jongseong subconsciously scrunches his face.
The knight slowly opens his eyes, gaze already met with Jungwon’s. He lifts an eyebrow, but continues to sing a familiar song with a soft, low voice; the sides of his eyes crinkle in amusement when Jungwon giggles at him. The prince continues to study his friend’s face, now realizing that surely, he was much older now.
Jongseong, now 20, had become much, much more handsome. He was always quite good-looking, Jungwon knew, and he still resembled the Jongseong he met many years ago. His features were just more defined, a certain roughness and maturity to him now that he was an adult. His eyes were as warm as ever, just like the day they first met — dark and intense yet had so much room for stars and galaxies called love.
Jungwon doesn’t know when Jongseong became this handsome, or when he realized it, but he feels his heartbeat suddenly accelerate, face heating up as he looks down at the knight. Jongseong is quick to catch the flush in his friend’s skin, lips quirking into a smirk as he lifts his head from Jungwon’s lap.
The prince is about to protest, but he doesn’t get to say a word as the older male gently takes his hands in his, pulling him up to his feet.
“Please don’t push me into the stream.” Jungwon laughs.
Jongseong grins, “Too bad, I wanted to.”
“What—” the prince squeals when the knight lifts him, carrying him like a bride, “Jongseong! Stop it! I command you to stop!”
Jongseong nears the stream, a mischievous laugh escaping him as the prince continues to yell at him. At the last minute, he takes a few steps back, placing Jungwon back down where the grassy area is. Glaring at the knight friend, Jungwon hits his shoulder and mumbles.
“You are insufferable.”
Jongseong laughs before reaching out once more; this time, he wraps one arm around Jungwon’s waist while the other hand gingerly laces their fingers together. Jungwon is about to ask what he had in mind now, but he doesn’t get to proceed with the question because Jongseong begins to sing louder this time, swaying the prince around in a calm waltz.
Jungwon puts all those years of ballroom dancing lessons to good use, keeping up with Jongseong’s leading. He keeps his eyes on the knight the whole time, smiling until his cheeks are sore. When their dancing comes to a halt, Jongseong keeps Jungwon in his arms, holding the prince with a respectable distance yet close enough to see the stars in his eyes.
Jungwon stifles a giggle, tilting his head amusedly when he speaks. “Sometimes I wonder if you’re a long-lost prince or someone who’s secretly from nobility.” he smiles.
Jongseong chuckles, “What makes you say that?”
Jungwon’s arms rest loosely around the older male’s neck, hands clasped behind his nape as he hums in thought, “You sing and dance like a prince. Sometimes I think you’re better than my brothers.”
At this, the knight laughs a bit louder, tilting his head back and subconsciously holding the prince closer to him. Jungwon doesn’t seem to mind, smiling fondly at the male in front of him.
“Are you saying those not in royalty or nobility aren’t capable of singing and dancing well?” he challenges playfully.
“Of course not!” Jungwon laughs, “I know many great performers who aren’t of royalty or nobility. It’s just…I wasn’t expecting it from you.”
“Why?”
“Ever since we were children, you always liked running, playing outside with the horses, and animals. Even when we got older, you preferred to spend time with the knights — you and Riki would spend hours practicing your swordsmanship with Yeonjun. I just didn’t see you as the type to engage in princely activities.” Jungwon admits, fingers idly playing with the strands of hair at the base of Jongseong’s nape.
“Does it surprise you that much?” Jongseong asks, and Jungwon can tell it’s a genuine question, “That I can actually be refined and charming like a prince?” — he adds the last bit more playfully.
Jungwon pouts before smiling, mustering as much assurance as he can when he answers, “I’m not exactly surprised. You’ve always been capable of many things, Jongseong. I just mean that…”
The prince searches for the right words, pursing his lips as he thinks. “I’ve always seen you as a prince” is what Jungwon wants to say, but he settles with something else — something safer — instead.
“I just mean that it’s nice to see this side of you.” Jungwon smiles fondly.
Jongseong is satisfied with the answer, flashing the prince an lopsided smile that makes the latter want to pinch his cheeks. Jungwon is about to say something to add to his previous statement when the familiar voice of Yeonjun calls after them.
“Prince Jungwon! Jongseong!” he says as he approaches.
Jongseong and Jungwon detach themselves from each other’s arms, eyes on the grass as they feel heat rise up to their cheeks. Yeonjun doesn’t seem to notice, unless he simply chose to leave the matter alone.
The older knight bows before addressing the prince, “I know today was supposed to be your rest day, but your parents are requesting your immediate presence in their study.”
“Did something…happen?” Jungwon inquires.
Yeonjun shakes his head, smiling warmly, “Not exactly. It would just seem that they’ve received a visiting invitation from a neighboring kingdom with the intention of introducing you to their son — potential suitor.”
The word “suitor” strikes Jongseong’s chest as if he had been stabbed by multiple arrows. Jungwon’s surprise distracts him from noticing how the younger knight’s expression sours, eyes suddenly filled with a gloomy blueness. Yeonjun clears his throat, having caught on to the younger knight’s disappointment.
“Anyway, I’ve been instructed to take you back. My apologies, Prince Jungwon, but it’s the King’s orders.” he apologetically smiles.
“It’s alright. Let’s go.” Jungwon offers a smaller smile.
Yeonjun nods, mounting his own horse. He waits for Jungwon and Jongseong to mount the latter’s horse as well before leading the way back to the castle.
Jongseong is much too absorbed in his crestfallen thoughts to register that when Jungwon holds onto him from behind, he hugs his torso a bit tighter than usual, cheek pressed against Jongseong’s back as the horse carefully trots away.
— A sudden, violent gust of wind rips the two flowers apart, leaves no longer touching and tangled.
— The somber flower hopes and hopes and hopes that it can reconnect with the radiant one, but every time it gets a chance to be close, a gust of wind interrupts; the somber flower can only admire its radiant counterpart from afar, hoping to somehow make it across.
Two years later, Jungwon begins to resemble his older brother, regal and poised for perfection. Along with that were the usual responsibilities, and he finds himself with little free time. Days are spent studying politics and attending meetings, and nights are for resting. Jongseong is still by his side, and though the two remain on good terms, a heavy and mysterious emotion hangs in between, causing occasional instances of awkwardness for both of them.
While Jungwon has voiced apprehensions and unwillingness to find a suitor for the time being, it was, unfortunately, tradition to prepare for such a thing as early as now. The 21 year old prince does not see the point, quite frankly, but he does what he can to delay the process.
The evening ball was going along smoothly as Jungwon spoke with Taehyun and Sunoo. Eventually, however, he is whisked away by another prince, keen on getting to know him and introducing himself as a suitor. Taehyun, knowing of Jungwon’s true feelings, raises a skeptical eyebrow before excusing himself, dragging Sunoo with him as they look for Riki and Kai.
The young prince finds himself speaking to several other princes throughout the night; he can’t even remember much about them because they don’t make much of an impression.
Everything happens with Jongseong keeping an eye on Jungwon from afar, as would any other personal guard. The older male’s eyebrow twitches with irritation every time a prince gets too chummy. His lips curl into a scowl when a prince gets too handsy. His ears bleed each time a prince boasts of his prestige. However, he bites back any words and keeps his feet planted in place, not wanting to cause a scene or make any issues for Jungwon.
He is, after all, more than content with the small smiles and assuring glances the prince sends his way every now and then.
When the ball ends late at night, and Jungwon bids farewell to his friends, he is almost ready to collapse on the spot. Riki teases his brother, joking that he was free to sleep in the ballroom, earning a slap on his arm. Heeseung gives his younger siblings a goodnight hug before excusing himself, wanting to rest as well. Similarly, Riki follows Sunghoon, ready to crash and sleep.
Jungwon then allows Jongseong to escort him, dragging his feet across the hallways and making Jongseong chuckle at the latter’s display of behavior.
Jongseong waits by the door of the prince’s room, eyes glued to the floor as Jungwon escapes to his bathroom, excited to get ready for bed. When he finishes and opens the door, Jungwon immediately jumps to the bed, falling flat with his face on the pillows. Jongseong continues to be amused by his friend’s behavior, shaking his head as he asks.
“Do you need anything else before I take my leave?”
The prince shakes his head, “Nothing that I can think of…”
The knight offers a smile, “Then I’ll be heading back now.”
“Wait!” Jungwon calls before Jongseong can even put a hand to the door’s handle, “I have a question. Come, sit.”
The knight follows his instructions, sitting on the little cushioned seat beside the bed. Jongseong gestures for the prince to continue.
“What is your opinion on suitors and marriage?” Jungwon suddenly asks, and Jongseong thinks he’s messing around, but the younger’s eyes are nothing but serious.
“Are you asking me what I think of that in general,” Jay starts, “or what I think of your suitors?”
“In general…I think.” Jungwon clarifies, though he isn’t sure either.
The knight hums, resting his elbows on his knees as he thinks of the right way to answer. “I think…” he starts slowly, “that as long as you’re happy and comfortable with the person you marry, then that’s enough.”
Jungwon doesn’t seem too convinced with his answer, so he presses on. “I don’t like it.” he breathes out.
“Don’t like what?” Jongseong furrows his eyebrows.
“I don’t like the idea of having a marriage arranged for you.” the prince states, turning his head to look at the knight, “Why is it even done? What if you end up with someone you don’t actually love? That’s terrifying! You’re stuck with them forever.”
Right now, Jongseong sees that the prince is not the 21 year old man who acted like everything was perfectly curated for his life — right now, he sees a young man afraid for his future, the heaviness and delayed realization that this came with being royalty.
Though it pains Jongseong’s heart and he wishes to console his friend in his arms as he did when they were children, he cannot bring himself to cross that invisible line — not anymore.
So he smiles as warmly as he can and responds, “But your father and mother met through an arranged marriage yet they’re happily in love. I know it seems bizarre, but not all arranged marriages are that bad.”
Jungwon sighs, “Perhaps, but that’s probably a miracle — a once in a lifetime thing. My parents are an exception, I believe. Every other marriage I’ve seen isn’t quite as beautiful.”
“Sunoo’s parents are also happy with their marriage. Same with Taehyun’s and even Kai’s.”
“Still—”
“Are you unhappy?” Jongseong then asks directly, leaning forward to look at the prince with intense eyes, “Do you not like the suitors you’ve met? Are you afraid of choosing?”
Jungwon sighs, sitting cross-legged on his bed as he fiddles with the sheets. His eyes are glued to the fabric, shaking with unease. Was he afraid to acknowledge the unfamiliar feelings of affection he held for the knight? Was he afraid to admit that the only “prince” he’d ever love is Jongseong, even if he wasn’t a prince?
Did he not like the idea that he would never be able to tell him so?
“It’s nice that my parents found each other.” Jungwon begins, “But I’m…not quite sure I can say the same for me. I don’t like anyone yet.”
“Then give it time, Jungwon.” Jongseong says, and he feels his heart crying in pain at his next words, “You’ll find the perfect prince eventually.”
“But—”
“Jungwon.”
“Alright.”
Jongseong smiles once more, nodding in approval — he was quite good at hiding the fact that he wished he were the “perfect prince”. The younger male makes himself comfortable on the bed before reaching a hand out.
Jongseong is familiar with all of Jungwon’s mannerisms, and when the prince did this, he often wanted his hand held; he did this many times when they were children, reaching his hand out when he was scared. Either Heeseung, Riki, or Jongseong would hold his hand, giving it a little squeeze.
But to hold the prince’s hand now would be quite different, especially when the knight knows his feelings for the latter are no longer that of “simply friends”. Jonngseong clenches his fist, resisting the urge to envelope Jungwon’s hand in his larger one.
“Jungwon, you know it’s improper for us to do that now.” he sighs, a sad and apologetic smile on his lips.
The prince smiles in the same manner, resigned eyes giving away the idea that he already knew the outcome.
“I know.” Jungwon says, dejected. “I just miss it” He wants to say, but he keeps that to himself and instead whispers, “Can you at least sing me to sleep? Like before? I haven’t heard you sing in a while.”
“If that’s what it will take for you to sleep.” Jongseong smiles.
The knight sings, voice soft and loud enough for just the prince to hear. Jungwon would always tease Jongseong for having a beautiful voice, often questioning why he didn’t become a performer instead of a knight.
Not even a minute passes as Jongseong’s voice soothes the prince, eyes instantly shut as he falls asleep soundly.
So without the eyes of anyone else — not even the prince himself — Jongseong stands from where he sat and slowly drags his feet closer to where Jungwon lay. He leans over, pressing a very quick and chaste kiss to the top of the prince’s head before pulling away. Jungwon remains asleep, and for a moment, none of his worries and burdens are clouding his expression.
It makes Jongseong smile knowing that he is able to grant him a little comfort.
But it also leaves a bittersweet taste in his mouth knowing that one day, he will no longer be able to do so.
So he leaves Jungwon’s room immediately — Jongseong leaves before he takes action and wakes the younger just to foolishly pour his heart out to the man he cannot have.
— Dozens of small, thorny plants begin to sprout on the ground between the two flowers, separating them further. The somber flower turns away, unaware of its radiant companion trying to reconnect once more.
— The little, thorny plants have somehow stopped growing between the two flowers, but the somber one continues to keep them apart as its own thorns grow larger and longer.
At some point, Jungwon realizes that the knight had begun to distance himself again, offering small smiles that never seemed like it belonged to him.
The distance Jongseong wedges between them grows when word goes around that an emerging powerhouse kingdom — the Yoon Kingdom — wishes to visit the Royal Family in hopes of asking for Jungwon’s hand in marriage for their own son.
As the Yoon Family discusses matters with the King, Queen and royal children, word continues to go around that the King and Queen are considering the arrangement as it appeals to both parties in a very beneficial way. Heeseung muses that the Yoon prince doesn't seem too bad, but he keeps it to himself that he thinks someone else is better.
As Yeonjun and the older knights are on duty guarding the royal family during the meeting, Jongseong and Sunghoon take a break in the knights’ chambers. The latter is polishing his sword when the other knight suddenly speaks up.
“I don’t like it.” Jongseong mutters.
“Don’t like what?” Sunghoon inquires, “The Yoon prince?”
Jongseong lays on his bed, tossing an apple up and down as he replies, “Among others.”
“Well, it’s not our place to exactly speak on it,” Sunghoon muses, “but I see where you’re coming from.”
“Right?” the other knight suddenly sits up, “I just…don’t feel like he’s right for him.”
“In all honesty, Jongseong, you’ve never thought of anyone as ‘right’ for Jungwon.”
“I know.” Jongseong’s voice falters, shaking his head and laying back down, “This is probably just the jealousy speaking.”
“Well,” Sunghoon hums, looking at his friend with a knowing look, “at least you’ve somewhat acknowledged that.”
It’s afternoon by the time the meeting with the Yoon Family is concluded; Jungwon’s parents are busy touring the Yoon King and Queen around their castle, while the Yoon prince is having a conversation with Heeseung somewhere in the courtyards.
Jungwon spends the rest of his day with Riki in the garden. Seated by the glass table, they enjoy their tea and cakes. “So…Prince Yoon Joohyuk…” Riki starts, looking at his older brother, “Anyone can tell he’s smitten. He’s head over heels for you, brother!”
Jungwon makes a face, sipping his tea before responding, “Not exactly my type.”
The younger prince chuckles. “You aren’t exactly keen on many of the princes you’ve met, you know?” he points out, “You’re only interested in a certain knight. Why don’t you just have an honest conversation with Father and Mother? Maybe they’ll see where you’re—”
Jungwon shoots him a glare, interrupting his words, “You know the chances of tradition being changed are very, very slim.”
Riki chooses to drop the topic and instead wiggles his eyebrows playfully. “I hear the Yoon Family is staying ‘til night for dinner? Think you can entertain Prince Joohyuk for a few more hours?”
Jungwon groans, and his younger brother has the audacity to laugh at his predicament, “With all due respect, can they go back to their kingdom already? I’m exhausted.”
The two siblings continue to converse with each other; it was a nice break from all the royal duties and obligations they recently had to deal with. The moment is cut short, however, when Jongseong approaches them, a neutral expression on his face as he addresses the middle prince.
“The King and Queen wish to speak with you, Prince Jungwon.” he announces.
Jungwon nods, a small pout on his lip as he excuses himself from Riki. He then follows the knight back inside the castle. Riki can only stare at his empty tea cup, a sympathetic smile on his lips as he muses to himself, Those two fools.
“So…” Jungwon starts in an attempt to break the heavy silence that has blanketed him and the knight.
It does little, however, to alleviate the situation. Jongseong merely hums, turning to him with a blank expression and tilt of his head.
“The meeting with the Yoon Family went…alright.” Jungwon starts, unaware of the way Jongseong tenses at the mention of that family’s name. “Mother and Father are still mulling it over as well, so nothing’s definite. Heeseung did say I should speak to my parents about—”
“What takes place during the royal meetings is none of my concern, Prince Jungwon.” Jongseong suddenly says, “It’s not my place to speak on it.”
Jungwon flinches, and maybe Jongseong misses it because he seems to press on and walk towards the King and Queen’s study.
“Of course.” the prince mutters, sighing to himself.
Neither says a word when Jungwon steps inside his parents’ study, door gently shut behind. Jungwon is then informed that while the arrangement with the Yoon Family is appealing, and though the Yoon Family seems fond of him already, his parents assure him that nothing is set in stone.
Jungwon purses his lips, shifting his weight from one foot to another before managing to form a coherent sentence, “None of the princes I’ve met have been people I want to marry.”
“Do you have someone in mind? Perhaps we can arrange and discuss with whoever their family is.”
Jungwon clears his throat, shaking his head and faking a smile. “None at the moment.” he declares, “I’ll wait, perhaps someone will come along.”
Dinner was not unpleasant, but it was not the most enjoyable thing for Jungown either. The Yoon prince was a great conversationalist who spoke eloquently and kept the discussions alive, and even the King and Queen were quite amused. Jungwon threw in a few comments and reactions every now and then, but his eyes never settled and would often glance at Jongseong who was standing by the doors with Yeonjun and Sunghoon.
Something the Yoon prince silently took note of.
As if the Yoon prince could already tell what was happening, he gently puts an arm around Jungwon’s shoulders, chivalrous and sweet, as he releases a few praises for the other prince. Jungwon tenses at the touch but forces a polite smile which the Yoon prince takes as a victory of sorts, especially when he sees that Jongseong’s jaw clenches, eyes downcast on the shiny floor.
Later on, Jongseong escorts Jungwon back to his room; he still plays the silent game, merely humming or nodding when the prince speaks to him. The usual routine of him waiting by the door while Jungwon gets ready for bed is still the same, but the buzzing silence begins to pester the prince.
Once he’s on his bed and Jongseong is about to leave the room as usual, he calls the knight’s name.
“Jongseong.” Jungwon says — it’s a gentle command, or plea rather, for the older male to just stop and look at him properly.
The knight turns around, expression still blank as he stares at the prince. Only now, in the solace of his room, does Jungwon take notice of the uncharacteristic darkness in Jongseong’s eyes.
Frowning, he takes a deep breath and speaks, “Will you finally tell me why you’ve been acting like this?”
“Like?” Jongseong lifts an eyebrow, “It’s nothing.”
“Don’t lie to me.”
“I’m not.”
“I know you.” Jungwon bites his lip; moments like these were times he wishes he had Riki’s brazen attitude. “Will you at least tell me what I did for you to act like this?” the prince tries.
Jongseong’s expression finally softens, but the warmth in his eyes is still missing. “I’m your personal guard, Jungwon. This is how I’m supposed to be.” he explains.
“Yes,” Jungwon huffs, “but you’re also my friend.”
Jongseong looks at the floor, and the prince is met with silence. Jungwon’s throat suddenly feels dry, the room too small and suffocating.
“Unless that title doesn’t mean anything to you anymore.” he mutters bitterly.
When Jongseong doesn’t respond, Jungwon feels his eyes get watery, and his vision begins to blur. There’s a heaviness clutching at his chest, eating him from deep inside. It only becomes worse when Jongseong turns on his heel, poised to exit the room.
The knight doesn’t make it past three steps as he feels a pair of arms circling around his waist, holding him from behind. Jungwon’s face is pressed against his back, voice broken and desperate.
The prince breathes out, “Stop walking away from me.”
“Jungwon.” Jongseong sighs, turning around to look at the younger male.
He is instantly met with Jungwon’s distraught face, eyes teary and expression weary. Jongseong reaches a hand out, slow and tentative as if he were afraid of getting burned for being too close. Sighing, the knight breaks his own rules, gently wiping the prince’s tears away with his thumb.
He’d be a liar to say he didn’t care; the sight of his best friend — the man who had his heart — broken over his immaturity crushed him immensely.
“I’m sorry.” he whispers, warmth slowly returning to his brown eyes, “I’m just a bit tired.”
“Me too.” Jungwon admits; he attempts to offer a smile, but his lips only quiver in response.
Jongseong brushes a few strands of hair away from Jungwon’s face, and the return of his gentle smile is enough to soothe the slight ache the prince had been feeling. For a while, the two just look into each other’s eyes, a million unspoken words flying back and forth as they try and try and try to convey their emotions and feelings.
It’s bittersweet — there’s a comfort in knowing that they always had and will have each other, but it was also bitter and unfortunate that what they truly desired for each other was not exactly attainable.
Jungwon knows that deep down, Jongseong was not a prince he could give his heart to.
Jongseong knows that the prince wasn’t his to hold for the rest of his life.
But Jungwon will try.
“Forgive me for what I’m about to do, Jongseong.”
In an instant, Jungwon surges forward, lips pressed against Jongseong’s — the prince worries that the action would scare the knight off, but to his surprise, Jongseong kisses back, strong arms wrapping around his waist tighter.
The longer they kiss, the weaker Jungwon’s knees become, so he takes small steps backwards until he and the knight are falling onto his bed with the elder hovering above. The sudden change in position has the prince gasping in quick surprise, and Jongseong takes the opportunity to slip his tongue inside his mouth. Jungwon welcomes the intrusion, humming contentedly when he feels the older male’s tongue exploring him from within.
It’s curious and eye-opening, but also messy and frantic. The wet, popping sounds that fill the room each time their mouths separate reminds them of seconds that tick by like a countdown. Longing gasps and desperate whispers are exchanged between the two, kiss after kiss that has Jungwon feeling like he was drunk on Jongseong’s lips.
He certainly did not know that kissing Jongseong would feel like paradise. Kissing Jongseong felt like an escape, a chance to breathe new life as the knight took his gasps and whimpers, returning them in the form of his tongue dancing with the prince’s own.
There’s an impending sense of doom looming in the corners of the prince’s bedroom; this temporary indulgence will fade when the sun rises. This truth taunts Jungwon even more when Jongseong reluctantly pulls away, both males panting with unspoken yearning glossed all over their swollen lips.
A string of saliva hangs between their lips as proof of the line they just crossed — hanging between as if it were the only thing keeping them this close.
“Jungwon.” the knight sighs against the younger’s parted mouth, “I can't…we can’t—”
“Is it a sin to want you?” Jungwon croaks out, tears trickling down the sides of his face once again, “Is the world going to go up in flames just because I want to love you?”
A speechless Jongseong frowns, eyes filled with heartache as he leans down to kiss the tears away. Jungwon keeps one hand braced at the back of the knight’s nape while his other one quietly unties the strings of the tunic he wore, pulling the fabric to expose a small portion of his chest. Jongseong is alerted of the action and leans back just enough to look at the prince with worried but inquisitive eyes.
Jungwon responds with silence, gaze intense yet gentle as he takes hold of one of Jongseong’s hands, slowly bringing it to his chest. Panic settles in the knight’s bones as his palm makes contact with the prince’s skin, the latter’s heartbeat alive and roaring under his touch.
“Jungwon, what are you—”
“This heart is yours, Jongseong.” Jungwon declares, “I don’t want anyone else to have this heart but you.”
Jongseong breathes heavily as he looks down at the man who he has also given his heart to. Jungwon looks indescribably ethereal right now, pretty eyes filled with longing — he looks so raw and vulnerable, trusting only Jongseong with this side of him.
It looks and feels so unreal, the knight has to use all his strength to not take Jungwon and make him his right there and then.
He doesn’t know how to respond, the confession he wants to shout still lodged somewhere in the chasms of his hammering heart. So instead, he withdraws his hand from Jungwon’s chest, bringing his lips to place a tender kiss where his touch had just ghosted.
Jungwon doesn’t entirely understand what the gesture meant, but he lets a small hope blossom where Jongseong had kissed him. He lets that hope nestle in his heart, praying that time will finally relent and let it fully sprout into a dream come true.
Even as Jongseong reluctantly gets up and leaves a chaste kiss on the prince’s forehead before taking his leave from the room, Jungwon lets that hope linger in his heart.
Because maybe, just maybe, the day will come when Jungwon can tell his parents — tell the world — that Jongseong is his happily-ever-after, not the other princes he has to choose from.
That Jongseong has always had his heart, right from the very start.
When the knight closes the door to Jungwon’s room, he leans against it, shutting his eyes tightly. When he opens it again, his gaze is on the familiar, large windows — on the stars that glimmer brightly above. He releases a deep sigh as if that singular breath carried all his desires, waiting to be carried to whoever was listening in the skies.
The heaviness in his heart makes him want to cry, but the tears backtrack as he registers someone approaching. From the corner of his eye, he sees the Yoon prince at the end of the hallway. Standing straighter, Jongseong faces the prince and bows briefly.
“Prince Joohyuk, good evening.” the knight says with a neutral voice, “What brings you here?”
The Yoon prince takes a few steps forward, smile friendly yet patronizing, “I wanted to speak to Prince Jungwon before my family and I return home.”
Jongseong nods, “I understand, but the prince is already asleep.”
Joohyuk is about to open his mouth to speak again when Jongseong adds with a lower voice, “Furthermore, guests aren’t allowed into the rooms of the Royal Family.”
“And knights aren’t supposed to be in love with the princes they guard,” Joohyuk smirks, “correct?”
Jongseong feels a brief spark of panic in his nerves, but he plays it cool and offers a calm smile. “I’m sorry, Prince Joohyuk, but I’m afraid you’re gravely mistaken.”
“It’s rather obvious, Sir Park.”
“Prince Jungwon’s personal life is not mine to speak about.” the knight says, level-headed, “Perhaps he will tell you more when you continue to see each other in the future.”
“Yes, yes, of course.” Joohyuk steps closer until he’s right in front of Jongseong, “I am, after all, madly in love with him. I knew from the moment I laid eyes on him that he was the one.”
“Wonderful.” Jongseong smiles, practiced and cold.
Joohyuk then pats the knight’s shoulder, “And I do not like to share.”
Jongseong nods, allowing his smile to curl into something more cocky, “Then it would serve you well to know that Prince Jungwon is a very loyal person.”
— The radiant flower takes a leap, leaning and bending its stem towards the somber one. It succeeds, but tears its leaves in the process as the sudden growth of thorns gets in the way.
— The little, thorny plants have begun to grow again, wedging themselves in between the two flowers with great determination. One thorny plant captures the radiant flower, prompting the somber one to darken with envy.
The Yoon Family makes another visit about 2 weeks later. Lunch is as pleasant as usual, and later on, Prince Joohyuk invites Jungwon to take a stroll with him in the gardens. Of course, the Yoon prince is aware that Jongseong has to be with them as per protocol, so he makes deliberate advances towards the other prince to irk the knight.
He holds Jungwon’s hand, leaves his hand on the small of his back, leans over to whisper intimately in his ear, and lathers on a million compliments. Jungwon is well-mannered as he receives these gestures, giving the other prince a sweet but forced smile and a few practiced giggles.
In one instance, Jungwon trips on a crack on the pavement, and Prince Joohyuk is quick to catch his fall – one arm around the other prince’s waist while his hand holds onto Jungwon’s forearm. Jungwon thanks him, chuckling about how he does have a streak of clumsiness. Prince Joohyuk laughs, adding an “it’s quite charming” statement before bringing Jungwon’s hand to his lips to leave a kiss.
Jongseong is poker-faced, but he internally rolls his eyes a million times – Sunghoon would have teased him for it. A part of him is thankful that Yeonjun calls for him, explaining that the King needed to have a quick word and that he’d watch over Jungwon for him for the time being. He’d be saved from Joohyuk’s displays of affection, at least.
But the other part is also bitter at the idea of leaving Jungwon with the other prince. Jongseong feels like Joohyuk is snickering at him because of this.
Later on, a little bit before dinner, the King and Queen express their wish to speak to Prince Joohyuk and his parents in private, so they retreat to the King’s study.
Jungwon, on the other hand, heads for Heeseung’s study, opening the door to see his older brother having light-hearted chatter with Prince Jaeyun – his fiance. Jaeyun greets with a warm grin, and Heeseung mimics the action. “What can I do for you, brother dearest?”
“Have you seen Jongseong?” Jungwon asks, embarrassed at how nervous his voice sounds.
Heeseung tilts his head. “He’s your personal guard, Jungwon, not mine.” he says with a teasing smile.
“Yes, but after my walk with Prince Joohyuk, it was Yeonjun with me and not Jongseong.” the younger male clears his throat, “He said Father called for Jongseong, but I know Father’s with the Yoon Family right now.”
Heeseung sighs, leaning back on the couch. Jaeyun looks at Jungwon with understanding eyes before turning back to the older prince. He whispers something to his fiance, and whatever it was, it prompts Heeseung to nod.
“He’s busy, Jungwon.”
“Oh.”
“I’d tell you to let him be because he has other things to focus on,” the eldest prince says, “but I know you’re going to find him one way or another.”
“I mean, if it’s really important, I’ll just see him tomorrow.” Jungwon shrugs, “I’m mature now, Heeseung. In case you’re still doubting me.” — he says the last bit jokingly.
Heeseung chuckles, grinning wider this time. “No, I know that.” he confirms, “Father assigned him a task, though I’m not aware of the details. Either way, I’ll have Yeonjun inform him to see you. The gardens at 7:00? Is that alright?”
“Alright.” Jungwon smiles, walking over to hug his brother, “Thanks, Heeseung.”
“You and Riki are both so spoiled.” he jokes, patting the younger’s head.
“As if you weren’t.” Jaeyun quips playfully.
At 7:00 in the evening, Jungwon finds himself seated on one of the marbled benches in the gardenhouse, staring up at the starry sky the glass roof provides a view of. He is much too lost in his pensive thoughts to register the sound of footsteps approaching.
He is roused out of his musings when he feels a hand on his shoulder, gentle yet firm like a certain someone. Whipping his head around, Jungwon’s gaze is met with Jongseong who is already smiling gently.
“Heeseung said you wanted to see me?” he says.
“Yes,” the prince starts, patting the spot next to him, “but he said you were busy with something Father assigned you to.”
Jongseong sits down, knee bumping the prince’s. He avoids the latter’s eyes, something he often did whenever he didn’t want to worry him.
“You can say that.” the knight begins, releasing another deep sigh, “I still am a bit…busy.”
“What is it?” Jungwon says abruptly, but softens his voice after, “I mean…if you want to talk about it.”
“You probably won’t see me for a week…” Jongseong says, still refusing to meet Jungwon’s eyes.
“What—” the prince blinks, “Why?”
“Are you aware that there is a kingdom that currently has extremely aggressive tension with our kingdom?” Jongseong asks, but he answers his own question, “Of course, I’m sure you’re aware of that.”
“I heard from Soobin; my family refused an alliance with them as there were practices that they did that were…immoral in Father’s eyes.” Jungwon replies, an uneasy feeling brewing at the pit of his stomach, “Tensions have been there for about three years, but recently, things became worse as they threaten aggressive action.”
“Exactly.” is all Jongseong says, and it still manages to confirm the prince’s suspicions.
“No.” Jungwon frowns, “You can’t go.”
Finally, the knight meets Jungwon’s eyes; there’s a gloominess in them, and Jungwon can tell that the elder is just as worried as he is.
“It’s not like it’s an all-out war, Jungwon.” Jongseong clarifies as if it would soothe the prince’s heart, “Your family owns little patches of land — towns — in certain borders. The aggressors are targeting those, not the main kingdom. Your father just wants me and some other knights to appease the situation and defend those small towns.”
“That doesn’t mean it isn’t dangerous!” the prince suddenly exclaims, “Why are you being sent?”
“Because I’m a knight as well.”
“A young one! My personal guard!”
“Jungwon,” Jongseong starts firmly, “Heeseung was young when he began learning to be a king. You were young when you began learning to be a princess. Just because I’m young, it doesn’t excuse me from skipping out on duty. You have yours, and I have mine.”
“But—” Jungwon struggles to find the words.
Perhaps Jongseong was being sent because his skills were known to be unparalleled for his age — an excellent swordsman with a brave and courageous heart, gifted with natural skill. Still, the prince can’t wrap his head around the reality and asks again.
“Why you?”
Jongseong’s stern expression softens with a smile more gentle than the first. “I volunteered to.” he admits, “I did so because I want to make sure you’re safe.”
“How are you going to do that away from me?” Jungwon questions, “Are you not supposed to be by my side?”
Jongseong swallows the lump in his throat, “If the aggressors army manages to overtake all those little lands your family owns, they’ll keep pushing until they reach this very castle. Do I look like I want that happening, knowing you’re here? They’re just starting their assaults, but the knights are being dispatched to prevent that as early as now.”
Maybe Jungwon was acting selfish. Maybe he wanted to be selfish after years of being subjected to so many rules and obligations.
He stands up instantly and boldly declares, “I will have a word with Father to let you stay.”
Jungwon then moves to walk back inside the castle, but Jongseong grabs his wrist, keeping him in place with a strong grip.
“Stop it, Jungwon.” Jongseong says.
On a regular occasion, the prince would be slightly shocked at the deep and firm tone in the older male’s voice; but right now, he wasn’t affected. Instead, he turns on his heel, eyes set ablaze as he stares at the knight.
“And if I order you to stay?” Jungwon knows he sounds foolish, but it doesn’t stop him from allowing his emotions to finally flood through, “If I order you to stay, will you?”
The knight is calm as he slowly removes his grip on Jungwon’s wrist to gently lace their fingers together, “The King is who I answer to.”
“Jongseong, please.” a tear rolls down the prince’s cheek, and it takes all of Jongseong’s willpower to not reach up and wipe it away, “I don’t want you to go. You answer to me, I’ll take responsibility if Father has any objections.”
“You act like I’m going to die.” the knight attempts to lighten the mood — classic Jongseong, using humor to sweep things under the rug, “Can’t you think of a scenario where I actually make it back alive? I’m going with Yeonjun anyway.”
“You’re such a fool.” Jungwon hisses.
Jongseong knows that.
“I know I am.” he says it out loud.
“I love you.”
Jongseong wishes he could say, but he knows he can’t. A bitter smile makes its way onto his lips as he gives the prince’s hand a squeeze.
“What kind of history books have you been reading for you to think that every confrontation — even a small one — would lead to death?” Jongseong chuckles, shaking his head, “Stop thinking like that, Jungwon. Just because history tells you knights and people die defending their land, doesn’t mean it’s guaranteed to happen all the time.”
“Be quiet. Why can’t you just—” Jungwon says in between sobs, frustration hindering his ability to speak, “Why can’t we just—”
Jongseong finally breaks. He redrew the line they crossed the other night after kissing. He redrew that line, but he boldly crosses it again. He tugs on Jungwon’s hand to envelope him in a warm embrace, and the prince immediately holds onto him like a lifeline, afraid the knight would slip away like sand. Jongseong caresses the back of the prince’s head each time a sob rattles his frame.
Jungwon wishes time would stop at this exact moment, allowing them to live in their self-indulgent bubble forever.
But they both know it can’t. It becomes even more evident when Jongseong pulls away, releasing the prince from his hold.
“It cannot be.” he whispers, looking at the prince with glassy eyes and an apologetic smile, “It cannot be, Jungwon.”
Jungwon smiles at him, lips quivering as he forces the words out, “The world will not burn if I choose to be selfish.”
Jongseong doesn’t get to ask what the younger male means because soon, the prince is pulling him close again, hugging him tighter.
This hug meant something more for both of them — a “selfish” act on the prince’s part as if doing so would keep his knight by his side forever, and a bittersweet one for Jongseong as he knows he has Jungwon in his palm, but cannot do anything else about it. The prince just stands there, and even if the knight knows he can hold him, he cannot.
But maybe Jongseong was selfish — just for tonight as well — because he wraps his arms around Jungwon, hugging the prince just as tightly.
With Jungwon burying his face by the crook of Jongseong’s neck, crying with waterfalls in his eyes, the knight buries his nose in the latter’s hair as if he was the last thing he wanted to smell before departing.
“Please don’t leave me, Jongseong.” Jungwon whispers brokenly.
“You know I’d never.” Jongseong pulls away enough to look into the prince’s glassy eyes.
The knight holds both of Jungwon’s hands in his, fingers laced together, palms fitting perfectly like they were meant to be that way. The prince glances at their joined hands before bringing his eyes back to his friend — the love of his life — and smiles weakly.
“You’ll come back to me.” Jungwon whispers, a precious secret meant for the two of them, “You’ll come home to me.”
It’s not a question or request. It’s a command. A plea. A silent prayer.
Jongseong steels himself, and while he has the courage to do so, he gingerly cradles Jungwon’s face in his hands. His thumbs smooth over the prince’s cheeks where tears have previously trailed.
“I promise.” Jongseong whispers, steadfast and sure before leaving a sweet kiss on Jungwon’s lips, “I’ll come back to you.”
Jungwon isn’t sure if the kiss was real or not. A figment of his imagination, reflecting his hidden desires and wishes. He’s too focused on the knight’s words; he can’t help but feel that this was Jongseong’s way of promising him something. It gives him a sense of hope that Jongseong will come back.
That when Jongseong does come back, maybe, just maybe, something awaits their future.
Maybe they can try.
“I’ll be waiting.” Jungwon smiles, fuller and brighter. Like Jongseong had just injected life into him.
Jongseong smiles similarly, eyes turning into crescents when he chuckles. The prince buries his face against the elder’s chest, hugging him tightly once again. The knight holds him safely, hand smoothing up and down the back of Jungwon’s head.
In the distance, hidden in the garden trees’ shadows, stands Prince Joohyuk. Eyes full of anger and jealousy. Hands clenched into violent fists.
— The radiant flower manages to reach a leaf out, wiggling through the thorny plant’s hold. It touches the darkening, somber flower, eventually lighting it up with its former color. The presence of the thorny plant, however, still lurks in between.
— The thorny plant shows its true colors, choking the radiant flower and extending its thorns to lash out on the somber one. But perhaps…a little breaking was needed for the two flowers to start anew.
Jongseong returns a week later, unscathed. Jungwon is nothing short of relieved, and the knight has the gall to tease him over it.
“See? You worried for nothing. Not even a single scratch.”
“Shut up, Park Jongseong.”
And while Jungwon feels more relaxed with Jongseong back by his side and not distant like before, reality decides to strike again. The Yoon Family soon requests for Jungwon to travel to their kingdom to pay a visit of his own since their son wanted to get to know him more.
Upon arrival, Jungwon is welcomed with a lavish meal and warm pleasantries, gifted with various valuables and trinkets. Jongseong is beside him the whole time, and when questioned about it, he calmly responds that it was the King’s orders for his son, given that he was Jungwon’s personal guard.
Evidently, it bothers the Yoon prince, as he rudely addresses Jongseong and accuses him of having a secret affair with the prince.
“What exactly is the nature of your relationship? Are you certain you are just the prince’s personal guard?” he rains down such questions.
The knight knows that the Yoon prince is mocking him. Belittling him. So he doesn’t give him the satisfaction of providing an answer.
And despite his parents’ command for him to stop, he continues, “You think I do not notice the lingering gazes and secret stares?”
“Prince Joohyuk.” Jungwon clears his throat, smiling politely to cover the irritation within, “Jongseong is my dear friend who is very protective, but please do not insinuate anything other than that. Besides, this meeting is not about him — it is about you and me, yes?”
Hours later, Jungwon concludes his visit; the Yoon King and Queen are truly kind people, so Jungwon says goodbye to them with warmth. Though polite, Jungwon says goodbye to the Yoon prince with a reserved smile. Prince Joohyuk insists on walking Jungwon to his carriage, so the latter allows him at least that.
Jongseong helps Jungwon as he mounts the carriage’s steps. The prince, however, missteps and essentially slips. Of course, Jongseong is quick to react, catching Jungwon with an arm around his waist and a hand holding the prince’s. The pair stare at each other with wide eyes before erupting into laughter. Embarrassed, Jungwon slaps Jongseong’s arm as the elder snickers at the prince.
Even the commanding knight of Jungwon’s convoy who stands by the horse has to purse his lips, debating whether to have a good laugh or show respect by keeping his expression neutral.
Prince Joohyuk witnesses it all, gaze locked onto Jongseong’s hand that settles at the small of Jungwon’s back. A switch triggers in the prince, eyes clouding with darkness as he takes bold steps towards the carriage.
It all happens much too quick for anyone to react.
The next thing everyone knows, Jongseong is on the ground, lip bloodied as Prince Joohyuk stands there with his fist clenched. The knight looks confused more than anything that the Yoon prince had just punched him out of nowhere.
Jongseong is about to say something when Prince Joohyuk grabs his collar and lifts him up on his feet. He then slams the knight against the side of the carriage.
“Prince Joohyuk!” Jungwon grabs the other prince’s arm while the other knights try to pry the Yoon prince away from Jongseong.
“Prince Jungwon is mine!” Joohyuk growls, eyes red and angry as he yells at Jongseong, “You’re just a knight!”
Jongseong glares, hand curling around Joohyuk’s wrist as he tries to get the prince to let go of his collar. “Prince Joohyuk, if you have concerns, I suggest you—”
“Silence! I saw you! You kissed him before!” another punch to Jongseong’s cheek, “I am his fiance! I will marry him, not you!”
“Yoon Joohyuk!” Jungwon shouts, the sound so uncharacteristic of him, even his knights are slightly surprised.
Joohyuk snaps his attention to Jungwon, instantly letting go of Jongseong's collar; the commaning knight rushes to the younger one’s side to ask if he was alright.
“Prince Jungwon—” Joohyuk starts, but Jungwon stops him with a raise of his hand.
“We are not even engaged yet, Prince Joohyuk. I am not your fiance.” Jungwon says, a detached and cold glaze in his eyes, “And I most certainly will not waste a fraction of time considering your proposal — not after you’ve hurt someone I love.”
“My prince! But— I love you!”
Jongseong can’t help but think that the Yoon prince seemed crazy. Pitiful and crazy. He looks at the commanding knight with furrowed brows, and the older knight can only shrug and pat Jongseong’s back.
Jungwon’s cold and regal expression does not melt. “You love me? Do you love me or my status? The prestige and power I hold as the second-born of my kingdom?”
“Prince Jungwon, what are you—”
Jungwon sees a few of the Yoon Kingdom’s knights coming over, probably alerted of the scuffle. Smiling gently, Jungwon walks over to Jongseong and uses the sleeve of his jacket to wipe the blood on the corner of the knight’s lip.
“If you have concerns, I do suggest you bring them up in private — with a proper discussion. Please don’t go around punching my beloved knight. It upsets me deeply.”
And with that, Jungwon nods at the commanding knight who smiles at the prince before instructing their convoy to prepare for departure. Jungwon takes Jongseong’s hand and pulls him along to enter the carriage with him, leaving the Yoon prince to stand there, dumbstruck. His own knights nervously usher him back to their castle.
In the carriage, Jungwon sits quietly, lost in his thoughts as he looks at the diamond ring on his finger — it was a gift from the Yoon prince to express that he was intent on marrying Jungwon.
Jongseong’s gaze is upon Jungwon, internally chuckling at the exasperated pout on the prince's lips. His eyes then glaze over to the ring that glimmers much too brightly for his liking. Jungwon senses this and brings his gaze onto his knight, studying the furrow of the elder’s brows.
“I don’t like it either.”
Jongseong’s eyes widen with innocent surprise as he snaps his gaze to the prince’s face, “Huh?”
Jungwon giggles, bravely reaching out both hands to envelope one of Jongseong’s larger ones. “Shall we toss this ring in the Grand Fountains and make a wish later?”
Jungwon rests his chin on the knight’s shoulder as he says this, and Jongseong can’t help but get lost in the younger’s pretty eyes — eyes that were cold and emotionless just minutes before as he confronted Joohyuk. Those eyes are now filled with hearts and honey once again as they gaze back at Jongseong.
The knight replies quietly, but Jungwon doesn’t miss the playful twinkle in his eyes, much like when they were children.
“With a ring that expensive,” Jongseong jokes, “your wish will definitely come true.”
Jungwon grins, eyes trailing to the strand of hair that hangs over Jongseong’s forehead, falling out of place from where it was initially slicked back. He reaches over to gently brush it away, expression clouded with concern
“I’m sorry that had to happen.”
Jongseong smiles, shaking his head, “It was just a punch, I’ll be fine.”
“Well, at least Father and Mother will surely reject their proposal.” Jungwon laughs lightly, “Joohyuk’s parents were lovely, but the prince himself…hmm…”
The knight chuckles softly, “Oh, but he was madly in love with you, it seems. Crazily so. Obsessed.”
“Yes, but,” Jungwon scrunches his nose before resting his head on Jongseong’s shoulder, “I’m madly in love with someone else.”
Jongseong smiles, kissing the top of the prince’s head, “Me too.”
Back in the castle, the King and Queen are shocked at the news. Heeseung helps the King with the necessary sanctions and communications with the Yoon Kingdom — the Yoon King and Queen deeply apologize and swear to carry out the necessary discipline on their son’s behavior.
Jungwon drops by the medical chambers; Jongseong initially insisted that he didn’t need treatment from just two punches, but the younger male was adamant about him getting checked nonetheless.
The prince knocks on the door, and when he enters, he is surprised to see the Queen speaking with Jongseong. She motions for her son to enter, and so he does.
The minute Jungwon’s eyes land on the fresh bruise on Jongseong’s cheek and the cut on his lip, the prince’s heart throbs with both hurt and relief. Without much thought, he throws his arms around the knight, hugging him tightly. Jongseong tenses and freezes, arms in an awkward position of just hovering centimeters away from the prince’s waist.
His cheeks are flushed and eyes wide as he nervously stares at the Queen, unsure if he should push the prince off or just…sit there. Thankfully, the woman chuckles, nodding her head as if to tell him it was alright.
Jungwon finally detaches himself from the knight, smiling shyly as he mouths a quick “sorry”. He then turns to his mother, smiling just as shyly as he says, “Sorry, Mother. I’ll be waiting outside.”
Jungwon then leaves the room, allowing the Queen to speak with Jongseong about who knows what; he just hopes Jongseong doesn’t get into any trouble. It wasn’t his fault that another prince reacted violently out of jealousy.
When the Queen finishes her discussion with Jongseong, she leaves the room and smiles at her son. Jungwon looks at his mother apologetically, eyes glued to the floor as he musters all his courage.
“Mother, I apologize for my sudden display of affection towards Jongseong.”
He then remembers that the commanding knight also had to report that bit of information that Joohyuk saw Jongseong kissing Jungwon that one night, most likely in the gardens. He doesn’t hold it against the commanding knight, he knows it was his job to report every detail to the King and Queen.
“And…I apologize for kissing Jongseong when he’s not my fiance or anything. I know that was very unbecoming.” Jungwon adds, “I’m just— how do— how do I…”
“Sweetheart, it’s alright.” the Queen smiles tenderly, “I know how much Jongseong means to you, hm?”
“Yes…” the prince trails off, cheeks more flushed than ever.
“Jongseong is a good man, and I’m thankful you have him by your side as well.” the Queen smiles before nodding, “Go on. Take your time. I will be with your father and Heeseung.”
The Queen and prince share an embrace before parting ways. Jungwon then gently opens the door, a smile on his lips as Jongseong looks up to greet him again. The older male moves to make space on the small bed he sat on, allowing the prince to sit next to him. It’s quiet for a few seconds, and Jungwon isn’t quite sure what he’s supposed to say.
In the end, he boldly reaches over to place his hand atop Jongseong’s and leans his head on his shoulder. The knight kisses the top of Jungwon’s head and laces their fingers together. Jongseong’sneyes inevitably gravitate towards the ring that the Yoon prince put on Jungwon.
The knight briefly smirks before moving his hand to lift Jungwon’s so he could carefully remove the piece of jewelry. He then tosses the ring in the small trash bin nearby, prompting the prince to lift his head and look at the knight with amusement.
Jongseong then brings Jungwon’s hand to his lips, pressing intimate kisses on the prince’s knuckles, lingering a particularly long kiss on the ring finger.
It reminds Jungwon of many nights ago, when he and Jongseong crossed a particular line — the night when Jongseong left the most tender kiss on his chest, no words exchanged.
A kiss that whispered the most intimate secret against the prince’s skin, seeping into his veins and searing itself into the depths of his heart.
And now that Jongseong presses similar kisses all over his fingers, Jungwon finally realizes what that kiss meant — the knight was silently confessing.
I love you. I adore you. You’re mine as I am yours.
Jungwon smiles, loving and adoring as he curls his fingers along Jongseong’s jaw. The older male returns the smile, honey oozing out of his eyes as he speaks with a hushed voice.
“I’d rather let the world burn than hand you over to anyone.” Jongseong brushes his lips against the prince’s, “I mean it.”
“I‘m not going anywhere, nor will I leave for anyone else.” Jungwon breathes against the knight’s lips.
Jongseong smirks, pressing a quick peck to the prince’s lips before declaring, “My heart belongs to you, love.”
Jungwon takes the lead and captures Jongseong’s lips in a deep, passionate kiss. A million unspoken words are exchanged as they share breaths, desperately pouring into each other’s mouths as if doing so gave them renewed life. The intense longing in their hearts presents itself in the form of lips melting together like molten gold, tongues engaged in an intimately fiery tango.
Jungwon pulls away, forehead resting against Jongseong’s as he whispers, breathless and relieved, “And you have had mine since the start, my love.”
It wasn’t that Jungwon was happy such an upsetting thing happened to Jongseong, but a part of him sees at least one small and positive fruit from the incident — he was allowed to refuse meetings and visitations from suitors for the time being, spending most of his duties in his study or visiting the townspeople with Jongseong.
The King and Queen perhaps realized that their sweet and dear son did not want or need a prince from another land — not when there was one, a knight rather, by his side from the very beginning. Though Jungwon doesn’t say anything yet, his parents can see it in the way their son’s eyes light up with love and glee when Jongseong is by his side.
— The thorny plant is plucked from the garden, roots uplifted and thrown away. The somber flower blooms again, bigger and stronger now, just as the radiant one breathes and glimmers with life once more.
— Time passes and the somber flower finds itself closer than ever to the radiant one, leaves tangled like interlaced fingers. Their gravitation and connection to each other does not end there.
Prince Heeseung finally marries his lover, Prince Jaeyun. Though the pair found each other through the usual arrangements, everyone was pleased to hear that the two genuinely loved each other and were more than happy to be wed to one another.
During the ceremony, all their friends and allied families celebrate the new union. Taehyun and Sunoo are there, laughing and playfully arguing with Sunghoon. Yeonjun and Beomgyu tease Heeseung, fondly congratulating their long-time friend for his marriage. Riki and Kai sneak away, most probably to showcase their ever-growing sword-fighting skills.
As with every ceremony, the royal orchestra plays an elegant melody for the guests. The newly-married couple starts the dance, all eyes on them as they gracefully glide across the ballroom. Jungwon finds himself smiling as he sees the joy and love in his older brother’s eyes, thankful that he has someone to spend the rest of his life with.
Little by little, the guests begin to join the couple on the ballroom floor, and soon enough, several pairs are also waltzing around. Jungwon chuckles when he sees Heeseung dancing with their mother who is happily crying in her son’s arms.
A tap on Jungwon’s shoulder jolts him in surprise, but he manages to ground himself and turn to the source — there stands Jongseong in a more formal uniform for the knights, his signature smirk curling at his lips. A silly smile slaps itself on the prince’s face when the knight offers his hand.
“May I have this dance,” Jongseong cheekily asks, “my beloved prince?”
“Of course.” Jungwon responds, promptly taking the older male’s hand and allowing himself to be led to the middle of the ballroom.
For a brief moment, the guests seem to fade into the background as Jongseong leads the prince gently, eyes focused on him and him alone. Jungwon feels like shrinking under his gaze, but this was his Jongseong — the Jongseong he met and played with as children.
The Jongseong who stood by him through it all, despite the challenges and bumpy roads.
The Jongseong who was worth more than any prince the land could offer.
The Jongseong no one could ever replace.
Overwhelmed with emotions, Jungwon pulls the knight closer, burying his face by the crook of the latter’s neck out of embarrassment. He vaguely feels the knight chuckling, swaying him gently as the orchestra’s music starts to fade. Heeseung seems much too preoccupied with Jaeyun, and the other guests are still busy mingling, so Jongseong decides now was the perfect time to whisk his dear prince away.
“Come with me, love?” he whispers, and Jungwon nods instantly.
The knight leads him to one of the other outdoor gardens by the castle, crossing a small bridge to arrive at the small gazebo that overlooks a small, man-made lake. The moonlight reflects on the water, painting the white roses nearby with a glittery shimmer.
“Can only take so much dancing and fancy music?” Jungwon teases.
Jongseong laughs, flashing a lopsided grin. “I can outdance you, you know?” he defends.
“Right.” Jungwon playfully scoffed, “I’ve been practicing ballroom dancing my entire life.”
Jongseong laughs at the prince’s remark, shaking his head in amusement. He then takes the Jungwon’s hands in his, holding them gently and pressing fluttery kisses on the skin.
“And I’ve been waiting for how many years just to have this moment.” he says, eyes twinkling so hard, they put the stars to shame.
“What moment?” Jungwon tilts his head, eyes softened by the haze of the moon above.
Jongseong smiles, the warmth in his eyes inextinguishable even by the darkness of the night. Jungwon was always weak for that warmth, but tonight, it was extremely captivating, drowning him in a pool of golden comfort.
“The right moment,” he begins, taking a step closer, “to tell you how much you mean to me. To tell you that I would give everything for you. To properly express how I feel with my own lips, my own words.”
Jungwon bites his lip to suppress the giggles threatening to escape; he also blinks his eyes several times, already feeling the tears that would be pooling there soon.
“To tell you that I have loved you for years, even when I knew it couldn’t be.” Jongseong kisses the tip of Jungwon’s nose, “To tell you that I still love you, and that I always will. I love you endlessly, Jungwon.”
“I know, Jongseong.” the prince smiles, reaching a hand up to cup the knight’s jaw, “I know I say ‘I know’ a lot, but it’s true. I’ve…always known. I think we’ve both always known, hm? It wasn’t something that was difficult to realize because I feel the same way.”
Jongseong presses a kiss to Jungwon’s palm, smiling against his hand when the prince giggles.
“I love you too, Park Jongseong. You aren’t my knight — you are my prince. You always have been.” Jungwon comments, “And I don’t know how I’m going to tell my parents or Heeseung or anyone for that matter, but I just know and hope that everything turns out for the best, because I love you.”
Jongseong leans his forehead against the prince’s as he whispers, “If it’s meant to be, then it’s meant to be, love.”
He kisses the princess’s palm once more before reaching a free hand to lace their fingers together, eyes never leaving hers. “Otherwise, I really will burn the world.” Jongseong quips playfully.
Jungwon erupts into a bright fit of laughter, eyes wrinkling at the sides as he stares at the knight with so much love, it’ll probably spill into the lake.
“You stole my words.”
Eyes wide open and hearts jumping out of their chests, Jongseong and Jungwon break away from their intimate embrace, alert at the sudden voice. To their surprise, Heeseung stands there, arms crossed as a cheeky smile stretches across his face.
“‘If it’s meant to be, then it’s meant to be?’ I’m the one who told you those words, Jongseong.” the older prince laughs.
“I know.” the knight grins after recovering from the initial shock, “I’m putting it to application.”
“Well, look at you two.” Heeseung walks over to them, “Finally.”
“Where’s Prince Jaeyun?” Jungwon asks.
“Speaking with Mother.” the older brother responds, “Don’t worry, he knows I left to find you.”
“Heeseung,” the younger prince begins, glancing at Jongseong then back at his brother, “please don’t tell Mother and Father. I’ll be the one to explain things myself.”
The older prince spares a glance at their interlocked hands before smiling. “There’s no need for that.” he winks, “Mother and Father already had an inkling of…whatever was going on between the two of you.”
“Since…” Jungwon blushes, “Since when?”
“Ever since the first time the Yoon Family visited.” Heeseung explains, “Mother in particular began to piece bits of information and observations she’d notice throughout the years and well…you know mothers. They always know.”
Jungwon flushes redder, and he can tell that Jongseong is just as flustered as he is. Heeseung continues, “She told Father, of course, and well…I’m sure they’d still love to hear it from the two of you as well.”
“I see.” Jungwon sheepishly grins.
Heeseung playfully ruffles his brother’s hair. “I mean, as future king, I personally don’t see anything wrong with you eventually marrying your favorite knight, and I doubt our parents would mind as well.” he sticks his tongue out, “Maybe they’ll let you have a double-wedding with Jaeyun and me tonight.”
“Heeseung!” Jungwon squeals, prompting both his brother and Jongseong to laugh in amusement.
Shaking his head, the older prince nods towards the castle, “I’ll go inside ahead…leave you both alone for a moment. But don’t stay out too long; come back inside soon.”
When Heeseung returns to the castle, Jungwon looks at his hand still holding onto Jongseong’s before lifting his gaze to the knight’s eyes.
“Truth be told, I’m not sure they’ll really…allow such a relationship immediately. It might take a while, maybe a year or so to fully approve of…this.” the prince admits, “I think.”
Jongseong pulls Jungwon closer, letting go of his hands so he could wrap his arms around the younger.
“I’ve waited years just to tell you that I love you.” Jongseong presses a kiss to the prince’s forehead, eliciting a giggle from him, “I can wait a few more if it’s for you.”
Jungwon’s smiles are endless tonight, eyes sparkling as he looks lovingly at the knight. His attention is then caught by two flowers that grew out of a small crack on the gazebo steps. He says a quick “hold on” before walking over and crouching down to peer at the flowers as a memory rushes into his mind.
The prince then stands from his crouching position, eyes still on the two flowers. His smile only widens when he feels Jongseong’s chest press against his back, arms circling around his waist from behind. Jungwon gently rests his hands on top of Jongseong’s, melting in the elder’s hold.
“There was a fairytale in one of the books I read when I was younger.” Jungwon muses.
“Hm.” Jongseong hums, pressing a feathery kiss to the shell of Jungwon’s ear, “What was it about?”
The prince recounts the story he read, “There were two flowers — a radiant one and a somber one — that sprouted in a garden together, and you could say they were in love. But…a lot of things happened and things like the wind or thorns tried to rip them apart.”
“What happened to them in the end?”
“Hmm…” Jungwon tilts his head cutely, smile coy and playful, “I’ll tell you when you marry me.”
Jongseong can’t help the chuckle that escapes him — he’s immensely enamored. “That can be arranged.” he jokes along, “Perhaps we should take Heeseung up on his suggestion and get married tonight.”
“My silly knight.” Jungwon grins as he angles his head to look at Jongseong, hand reaching up to caress his jaw, “The somber flower was finally able to hold the radiant one in its leaves—”
Jungwon spares a glance at Jongseong’s arms around him before looking back at the male and continuing, “— similar to an embrace. It surely took years of perseverance and persistence, but to grow with each other was their greatest joy.”
The prince finishes explaining the story with a glimmer in his eyes because yes, he sees it — Jongseong was the somber flower to his radiant one.
“I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life, growing in love with you, Jongseong.” Jungwon smiles gently, pretty features illuminated by the moonlight, “I love you.”
Jongseong gives the prince that loving, lopsided grin. “I love you too, Jungwon. You have my heart for eternity.”
And underneath the moonlight, he seals those words with a kiss that the prince instantly reciprocates, lips melting and hearts beating as one.
Time had tested their love for each other, relentless and sometimes cruel, but that same love withstood the thorns that came their way.
Now, their love blooms, growing stronger than ever.
