The fake moon

Summary:

Daisuke catches Anya staring at the screen late as night, he decides to sit down next to her.

Takes place before the crash.

Work Text:

Daisuke used to have pretty bad nightmares. They’d keep him up when he was younger and he’d cry while he ran to his parents’ room to hug his mom. Nobody could ever figure out what was wrong with him, he had a good life and was a happy person otherwise. Yet they came back every night.

Now he was 20, fresh out of college. They started to get less frequent around middle school. He thought they were gone for good, but then the crash happened. And they were back. He’s started waking up again covered in sweat and trembling slightly.

He usually just manned up and went back to bed though. But tonight, he sat up like usual. He panted and gripped his sheets while he looked around. It just his room. He sighs and gets up to pace around the ship, it usually calmed him down.

He ran his hand through his hair for a moment before getting up and leaving his room. His usual pacing route started with the lounge. That’s where he immediately found Anya. He found her sitting on the couch staring at the screen. She looked like she was zoning out. She seemed to have that distant look in her eyes recently.

”You good?” He kept his voice down so he wouldn’t wake up the others. He sat down next to her but left some space in case she felt uncomfortable. She jumped slightly, but when she realized it was Daisuke she calmed down.

”Yeah, I’m good..” She answered softly and scooted closer to him. He had to be the biggest sweetheart she had ever met, she felt comfortable sitting next to him.

”I don’t think people who are okay sit down and stare at this screen for who knows how long.” She laughed softly in response.

”Fair.”

He smiled slightly. He liked seeing her laugh and smile like that, she always seemed so miserable.

”You wanna talk about it?”

She paused for a second. She debated telling him about it all. About Jimmy, about what he did.. But she figured he couldn’t take that information. He was such a sweet soul, she didn’t want to burden him with that.

”I guess I’m just tired, you know? I’m always worried something will go wrong.”

”Yeah, I get it. My anxiety can kinda get out of control too. What kind of stuff are you worried about?”

She looked back up at the screen.

”I don’t know. I just constantly look over my shoulder, feeling like something is just about to happen and I have to do something to stop it.. it’s hard.”

He nodded.

”Yeah. I have really bad nightmares, it’s why I’m awake right now.”

He already felt like the conversation was coming to a close. He looked over at the screen again before back at her.

”Do you like looking at this a lot? I feel like I see you do this a lot.”

”I do. It’s relaxing, I always liked the moon.” Daisuke nodded.

”I’m the opposite. I’ve always liked the sun. Space is so pretty.”

She nodded and waited for a second before folding her hands in her lap.

”I already told Curly this, but there’s a dead pixel in the corner. I think I’ve spent too much time staring if I noticed that..” She laughed.

Daisuke squinted for a second before gasping.

”Dude, I see it. How did you notice that??”

”No clue. I just noticed that there was a slightly darker spot in the clouds so I got a closer look.”

He nodded and laid back.

“Huh. I guess I see it too. You’re weird sometimes, you know that?”

”Yeah.” She laughed again and scooted closer once more so they were right next to each other. She could see his smile subtly increase at that.

”You should probably get some sleep, I’m assuming you haven’t gotten any.” He finally said. Anya nodded in agreement.

”I will. You better too.” She pointed at him slightly. He raised his hands.

”Chill, I will.”
