Chapter 1: The Decision

Chapter Text

The cold night air swept across the barren hills of Lothal, where the twin moons hung high in the sky, casting pale shadows on the crumbling remains of Imperial structures. Sabine Wren stood at the edge of the old Rebel base, her gaze fixed on the endless stars above. Each point of light seemed to mock her, a reminder of how vast the galaxy was and how far away he could be. Ezra Bridger, the boy who had once saved Lothal and her heart, was out there somewhere—beyond the reach of the known galaxy, somewhere lost with Thrawn.

But she would find him.

Sabine tightened her grip on the hilt of her beskad—a Mandalorian weapon she kept close, a reminder of the warrior she was. Ezra had left her behind, entrusted her with Lothal's safety, and then vanished. That promise had weighed heavily on her heart every day since his disappearance. Now, after hearing the whispers of Thrawn’s return, Sabine knew she couldn’t wait any longer. Ahsoka's insistence on caution, on gathering allies and preparing for the worst, was no longer enough. The galaxy couldn't afford to wait, and neither could she.

She turned and moved silently through the shadowed hallways of the old base, her armored footsteps barely a whisper in the silence. Ahsoka was off-world, training with Luke Skywalker—another Jedi, another legacy. They were preparing a new generation of Jedi, laying the foundation for the future. But Sabine’s path was not with them. Her future lay with the past, with the promise she had made to Ezra.

She had a lead—a fragment of intelligence picked up from the outer rim, suggesting the location of a lost hyperspace route that might lead beyond the known galaxy. It was a slim chance, a long shot, but she had to take it. Even if it meant defying Ahsoka’s orders, even if it meant risking everything to bring Ezra back.

The plan was simple. She would slip away tonight, just as Ahsoka and Luke were occupied with the latest batch of younglings. Ben Solo, the bright-eyed and gifted prodigy, had already caught Ahsoka’s attention—his power was undeniable, and his presence a constant reminder that the Jedi were on the rise again. Sabine had watched Ben from the shadows, feeling the weight of a galaxy’s expectations resting on the boy’s slender shoulders. The New Republic needed protectors, defenders, and Ahsoka’s vision of a new Jedi Order was the best hope they had.

But Ezra—Ezra was different. His absence was like a wound that refused to heal. Every star chart, every transmission, every moment spent waiting was agony, and every day that passed made her feel further from him. The Jedi had their path, but Sabine’s was her own, and it was one she would walk alone if she had to.

Her fingers brushed against a hidden compartment in the old base’s central control room. A few quiet clicks, and the compartment slid open, revealing the star map she had secretly pieced together over months of searching. With a practiced hand, she activated it, and lines of light formed a twisting route—a map of the unknown. She had the destination, the coordinates she needed to follow.

Sabine felt a pang of guilt, thinking of Ahsoka. The Togruta had been a mentor, a friend, a guiding light during the darkest times. But Sabine knew that if she told Ahsoka, if she asked for her blessing, the answer would be a firm "No." Ahsoka was too cautious, too aware of the danger Thrawn represented to the galaxy. But Sabine's heart wouldn't be still. It ached with a longing that she couldn't push aside—a desire that had become as much a part of her as her armor.

"Forgive me, Ahsoka," she whispered, as she carefully transferred the coordinates to a small data chip and slipped it into her gauntlet. "But I have to do this. For him."

She moved quickly, packing supplies and securing her armor. The Phantom II, her small but reliable shuttle, waited in the shadows. As she moved towards the ship, her heart raced, every step a reminder that there was no turning back now. She hesitated for a brief second, her eyes drifting back toward the stars. Would he even be the same after all this time? Did he still remember her?

Her thoughts drifted to the last moment they had shared—the desperate final battle, the touch of his hand, and the warmth of his presence in the Force. She had never told him how she felt, never allowed herself to acknowledge the depth of her emotions. Now, the silence between them stretched across the stars, and all she could do was chase that unspoken promise.

With a deep breath, she boarded the Phantom II and powered up the engines, her resolve hardening like beskar. The ship hummed to life, and Sabine felt the familiar weight of her helmet as she placed it over her head, sealing herself away from doubt and fear. She was Mandalorian. She was a warrior. She would find Ezra, no matter what.

As she lifted off, Lothal's landscape faded behind her, the hills and ruins growing smaller with each passing second. A part of her knew she was making a mistake, but a stronger part—one filled with hope and longing—drove her forward.

Somewhere on another world, Ahsoka sat beside Luke Skywalker, watching the young Jedi-in-training spar in the warm sunlight. Ben Solo’s blue lightsaber flashed in the air, and Luke smiled with quiet pride. Ahsoka felt a pang of uncertainty in the Force, a shadow that passed across her senses like a fleeting cloud. But with a gentle shake of her head, she let it go, turning her attention back to the hopeful future they were building.

She didn’t know that one of her own had just crossed a line that might change everything.
