Masks and Names

Sophie has more masks than she can count.

Notes:

Sophie is like my favorite for this kind of thing ever

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Sophie always had a mask on. Sometimes she meant that literally with such as then she went to certain types of parties or when she needed to hide in a crowd. But more often it wasn't a real one.

No more often than not her mask was a metaphorical one. One of the characters she put on for a job or to steal something or even to just disappear. Each and every one of her personas was a mask. Not the person that she really was.

Charlotte was a mask she wore to get somewhere she thought she wanted to be. Even if that ended up not being true.

Annie was a mask of defense that she wore to make people scared. If they were scared of her they wouldn't harm her. And it just happened that she may have gotten in a bit over her head and had to fake her own death. That wasn't the first or last time either.

Julia was one that didn't last very long and one that she preferred to forget ever happened.

Even Sophie was a mask. Though as time went on she became much less of a mask and much more of who she really was. It was the most used of all her names. The one that stayed with her the longest. The mask, the person, she let grow the most. To change and reform as a real person did. And those changes brought Sophie closer and closer to her true self. The self that she didn't give a name to. That it never felt right to name. That would make it too real to ever possibly ignore.

But Sophie was as good a name as any to give her. She liked the way it sounded when her family said it.
