Neither Sal nor Tommy take Sal's firing very well.
Excerpt:
Tommy watches Sal’s indignant anger subside into panic, shrinking the man before his very eyes into something small and lost. He wants to go to him, but he’s frozen to the station floor with no more of an idea on what to do than his partner.
Chim is looking back at Bobby like he wants to say something, the Captain already half way back to his office. Hen and Sal’s eyes are fixed on each other, having one of their silent conversations even their best friends can’t decipher.
Sal sets his jaw, nodding almost imperceptibly before he turns to the door. His footsteps are solid and determined as he retreats out of the house, slowing just once to run his fingertips over the emblazoned ‘118’ on the side of the fire engine. Sal has disappeared behind the vehicle before Tommy can even get his feet moving.
