Work Text:
“How is he?” you ask the doctor as you fidget with the bouquet of daffodils in your hand, the two of you speed walking down the hallway corridor.
“He’s just fine, don’t you worry,” the older woman says with a comforting smile and gentle pat on your shoulder. “Appendectomies are always an easy operation, but your beau was exceptionally good- a pleasure to have in class, if you will. It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s healed and mark-free in half the usual time.” She gestures towards his room door, and you give her a grateful smile before peeking your head in.
“Hey, sick boy,” you coo lovingly, coming to sit by Ollie’s bedside while he slowly turns in your direction, squinting at you through groggy eyes. “How’s it feel to be legally doped up and missing one of your organs?” The man just blinks at you, eyes slowly roving around the room, to the flowers in your hand, before settling on your face. “Pretty good by the looks of it.”
“You look pretty good by the looks of it,” Ollie says with a dopey grin, trying to wink and failing miserably, his eyelids lagging in a slow blink.
“Oh my god,” you laugh, putting the flowers in the vase on the side table and leaning forward to brush his hair out of his eyes. “You’re not just doped up; you’re proper fucking wasted. What next- you’re not gonna remember me?”
“Am I supposed to?” You pause, heart stuck in your throat, and your boyfriend doesn’t laugh to give away the goof. He just keeps staring and smiling, looking at you like he doesn’t see you every day. Thankfully, you’ve seen enough viral, cutesy tiktoks just like this.
“Sort of,” you say as you turn your phone’s camera on and set it to record, holding it facing out against your stomach. “You don’t recognize me at all?”
“We’ve never met. I don’t think I could forget someone as beautiful as you.”
“You can, and you have, weirdo. We’ve been together for almost five years now.” Ollie’s jaw drops, his face brightening with slack-lipped wonder and delight as he gives you another appreciative once over.
“I get to kiss you?” he asks in astonishment, taking your hand in his and holding it to his heart, staring lovingly at you even as you laugh so hard, you drop your phone onto the hospital floor. “What about games? Have I shown you my trains?”
