Tough But A Gentleman

Summary:

Jay and Adam are on a date. Someone else tries to cut in.

Notes:

heavily self indulgent and inspired by the song “all boots” by cece. for raven as usual. I wasn’t going to post this, but in honor of their upcoming feud and the world needing more of this ship, I will.

Work Text:

Jay leans back against the bar, looking out over the crowd as he waits for Adam to get back from the bathroom. The new bar isn’t packed yet, but there’s a good crowd starting to grow. He sips his whiskey, watching the crowd idly.

“Well now, what’s a pretty little thing like you doing in a place like this?” A voice next to him says, sickly sweet and trying to be charming.

Jay blinks, not even sure the guy is talking to him. He doesn’t usually get addressed this way when by himself. He slowly turns his head and looks at the guy, sweeping his gaze over him. This must be what Adam refers to as a city slicker. His boots and his jeans and his pearl snap and hat all scream money, but they’re not lived in or worked in. They’re pretty and shiny and just for show.

“Who, me?” Jay asks after a moment, arching an eyebrow.

“Yeah. You’re the prettiest thing here, ain’t ya?” The guy smiles, leans closer. “Let me refresh your drink, hmm?”

If there’s one thing Jay knows it’s that he’s not taking anything from this dude. “Appreciate it. I’m good though. Thanks.”

The guy puts on a fake disappointed look and reaches out, twirling a lock of Jay’s hair around his finger. “Come on, pretty thing. You look like you need a real cowboy to show you the ropes. I can tell by the sexy accent you’re not from around here.”

Jay pulls his head back, offering a tense smile, trying to be polite, not wanting to ruin his date with Adam by starting a bar fight. “I’m from New Zealand. But I’ve already got someone showing me the ropes, as it were. Thanks.”

“New Zealand, huh? That’s a far piece. I could take you out, show you around town. We’d have ourselves a real good time, Pretty Thing.” The guy leans closer, letting Jay smell the whiskey on his breath.

Jay makes a face, hate the way the guy is calling him Pretty Thing. It makes his skin crawl. He turns to face the guy head on and opens his mouth to retort, but before he can, a hand lands on his hip. He automatically leans back into Adam, sensing his energy behind him.

“Who’s your friend, Jamie?” Adam’s voice is friendly, but there’s an edge underneath it that makes Jay shiver in response.

“Your name is Jamie? I like Pretty Thing better.” Jay has to tilt his head back to avoid getting poked with the brim of the guy’s cowboy hat.

Adam’s eyes narrow. “Did you even ask if you could call him that?”

“I don’t need to. I can tell he likes it.” The guy reaches out and tugs lightly on the end of Jay’s hair. “Dontcha, Pretty Thing?”

Adam’s hand is lightening quick, wrapping his fingers around the guy’s wrist. “Touch him again and I will break your fingers one by one. Understand?” There’s a smile on Adam’s face, but a growl in his voice.

Jay smirks, watching the guy’s eyes widen with fear before he tries to hide it.

“Who are you to talk to me like this?” The guy jerks his wrist out of Adam’s grasp.

Jay takes this one. “He’s my Cowboy. You aren’t worth the boots and hat you walked in with.”

Adam’s eyes flick over the guy, taking in his brand new hat and buckle and boots. He scoffs and smirks.

The guy opens his mouth, offended yet again. Jay cuts him off. “Face it. You’re all boots and no cowboy. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we have a date to get back to. And at the end of it, I’m gonna let him take me home and have his way with me. All. Night. Long.”

Adam laughs, surprised and pleased, turning Jay away from the pissed off and fuming fake cowboy, pulling him out onto the dance floor, kissing him when he dips him, tasting Jay’s laughter.
