Chapter Text
"Hey Kisuke?" You hang your head over the arm of the couch, staring at his upside-down form tinkering away at the table. Pausing, he turns to look at you, eyes glimmering with curiosity.
"Hn? What's up?" You mull over the thoughts plaguing your mind. The question at the forefront of your mind, begging to be asked, but now as you stare at him, you're beginning to rethink it. What if he thinks it's stupid? Or if you're annoying?
"Ah, nevermind. It's fine."
"Hey," Setting the odd contraption down, he gets up from the table, feet padding softly across the wooden floor to reach you. Kneeling down, his knuckles brush softly against your cheek as he meets your gaze. "You know you can ask me anything." His soft gaze warms your heart, that familiar giddy feeling spreading throughout your body at his patient smile. Letting out a small chuckle, you reach over the arm rest, fingers brushing over the brim of his hat before gently cupping his cheeks as best as you can without accidentally poking him in the eye. The action causes his gaze to soften further, smile widening as he watches your expression brighten at the contact.
"Would you still love me if I was a worm?"
Everything pauses to where you could hear a pin drop in a different room as he tries to comprehend what you just asked him. He remembers Ururu showing him a video of something similar awhile back.
"Eh?" His head tilts slightly in your grasp like a confused dog as you stare at him expectantly. "Do you mean if you got turned into a worm, or if you were always a worm?" You purse your lips at the question for a moment, since it was a fair question to ask.
"I guess both, but if I had to choose, it would be if I was turned into a worm?" The deep thought on your face causes him to chuckle before mimicking your actions and cupping your cheeks with his large hands. The feeling of him slightly squishing your cheeks causes you to grin at him, the warmth of his hands matching the heat building in your cheeks. Even after so long, he still makes you feel so giddy and flustered over the smallest of things. He lets out an exaggerated hum, the question tossing around in his brain.
"I suppose," He begins, trying to choose his words carefully as he remembers people from Ururu's videos crying over the fact their significant lovers wouldn't love them as a worm. It's such an odd thing to ponder, and while he's sure you wouldn't react in such a way, he's not about to take the chance. Yoruichi would never let him hear the end of it if he made you cry over this. "I would do everything I can to change you back." He tries to not laugh at your serious expression as your head hangs upside down, cheeks squished by his hands. The image reminding him of a squirrel or chipmunk with its cheeks full.
"And if you couldn't? If I was stuck being a worm forever?"
"Well then I would keep you forever in a spacious tank with the most premium dirt I can find and offer you various organic materials to eat everyday." By the way you beam up at him, he can tell he answered correctly and lets out a small sigh of relief.
"I hope you know I would do the same for you Kisuke! I would even design a tiny worm lab for you to tinker in with the help of Kurotsuchi. Maybe he could turn me into a worm and we could be worms together!" An abrupt laugh escapes him at how much thought you've put into such a simple question. It's just like you... It's what he loves so much about you. Leaning closer, he brushes his lips against yours in a featherlight kiss. Pulling away, he has the honor of seeing your face turn red at the action. No matter how many kisses he shares with you, he'll never get tired of how flustered you get with each act of affection.
"I love you. Always." Despite the red in your cheeks, you give him that same beaming smile that has made his heart stutter since he met you.
"Love you too!"
It takes all his willpower later to not laugh in Ururu's face and accidentally make her feel bad when she hands him a drawing of their whole family as worms. His worm has his hat, your worm is sporting your haori, Yoruichi's has cat ears, Tessai's with his little worm glasses, Ururu's with her pigtails, and Jinta's with his fiery hair. She stares up at him over the drawing with sparkling eyes, and despite the hilarious idea, the drawing still warms his heart.
The drawing is later proudly framed up on the wall with the rest of their family photos.
