Chapter Text
Two weeks since I’ve gained divine right.
Things have been… difficult, honestly. In all technicalities, I'm still in training with Two and Three, but just the angels’ lifestyle is hard to adapt to. First of all, I have to learn a whole other language because apparently when Two greets me with… sol… sallway? Solweiy… I think it's spelled “salve” which is weird because it's not pronounced like that. Three got physically offended when I greeted him with “saul-vee” instead of “sal-way.”
And then there's the actual blessing… Three says I have it easy, I only have to aid the other numbers, but then Two says I have to learn to control my value… How am I supposed to do that?! I'm a variable for Infinite's sake! But X did it…
Speaking of X, I haven't seen them at all yet… The second day I got here, I was introduced to everyone except Four, I believe, and X. But when I asked about those two, Three said X was resting while Four was actually living with us right now but “not open to new guests.” Apparently Four's staying in the room that Two told me not to go in? Wonder what's up with them…
But I thought I would've seen X sooner! Okay, they were resting, but that was one day! They wouldn't sleep for weeks on end, would they? I mean, I would if I could, but nobody could do that. Especially not someone who has a role as important as an angel.
One is also someone I haven't seen, Two saying something unfortunate happened to her. Three says they'll tell me when the time is right like I'm some kid or something… Actually, they treat me like their kid in general! I mean, I don't mind it sometimes, I can use some guidance here, but seriously! Fine, the integers are ten centuries older than me, but that's not a lot!
Speaking of, Two’s calling for me… You know, I'm grateful for them, since I already knew them when they previously helped me find my value. Still, it's been awhile since I've been around non-variables… But X is here! I haven't seen X in so long! Why won't they just let me see them?
Gods, Two is getting impatient… They sound annoyed…
Another time, then. To be continued.
“Y! Come on, already, you know the later you get down here, the later the lesson’s going to last, don’t you?” Two called from somewhere else in the house. Y closed their journal and made their way over to the living area, seeing the green higher-up sitting down and looking at them with a soft smile. Y frowned, going over and sitting across from them on their knees.
“Why do I have to do this?” They asked, looking at Two desperately. The other's expression became a bit more nervous.
“It's for the benefit of our system. Promitto .” Two sighed when Y narrowed their eyes. “I promise.”
“Isn't this what X is for?”
The green integer darkened a bit, stiffening and clearly going through mental distress. It only made Y question the secrets of the angels more. “Well… We can’t stress X out with all the work, can we?”
“Guess not.”
“Exactly. Don’t you want to help a fellow variable and angel out? Plus, having divine right gives you a wonderful status… the other variables are sure to respect you if you ever visit.”
Y frowned. “But X never visited us.”
Two thought for a moment. “Well, they were busy… Maybe you can change that, but maybe not.” They sighed. “I’m sorry, Y… This is a big responsibility.”
Y’s frown deepened. It made Two look guilty. They grabbed a textbook, flipping through the pages before landing on a designated section and turning it to the variable’s view.
“I know you probably think this is boring, but it is indeed important that you read this. It can help you understand better if you put the effort into it.”
Y looked down at the pages, seeing it was the basics about blessings. Honestly, it seemed more like rituals. Use all your energy to manifest the object. Other numbers may help you out on this. Study your meaning and make sure you believe in it, then bestow that onto the object.
The lime spirit eyed the page, glancing up at Two. “How am I supposed to study meaning if I don't have one?”
“That passage is referring to integers. Nobody really has the knowledge of a variable as a guardian angel, the only one with that information being… well, maybe Four…”
“X?”
The green spirit hissed. “Yeah, them too, but… Four’s better.”
“How? He's an integer!”
“They're… available.”
“But you're telling me not to go in the room where they are.”
“They're more available than X is… Anyways you'll have to study all of the meanings which are somewhere in this textbook. Get your notebook out, you'll need to jot down a lot of things…”
Y groaned out, burying their face in their hands. Two's smile fell, one of their hands going on Y's.
“Just think of it like math. Math is very complex and you needed to learn a lot of it when you guys got introduced to our world.”
“But that was years ago!” The variable snapped. “I don’t have the capacity to do something like that again?”
“And why not?”
Y stayed quiet, not having a good excuse. Two sighed softly, clearly trying not to get aggravated as they pinched in between their eyes and took deep breaths.
“You didn’t have to accept divine right,” they snapped bitterly, “you never had to agree, you could’ve told me no, Y.”
“I didn’t want to tell you no! How can I, you helped me find out my value so… so I need to return the favor to you.”
“Then you should’ve known what you were getting yourself into.”
Y sighed and nodded, marking the pages that Two told them to read and flipping through the pages until they found the meanings of the numbers, marking the start of that as well. Two told them to read only numbers one through nine, since those would be the most important.
“I don’t expect you to get done with that all today, but the longer you take to get that done, the longer it’ll take until you go with Three to actually start practicing. You understand that?”
“Yes, Two.”
“Not to be biased, but you might want to note the value of three more if you’re going to use them as practice… ask them about it, I don’t know what he has planned, really.”
Y sighed and closed the book, lugging it up and looking at Two. “Anything else for today?”
They shook their head. “No, not really. Just let me know if it’s too much and you can’t do it. Trust me, Y, I won’t think of you any less.”
“Thanks…” Y proceeded to walk to the room that Two and Three had given them. They felt grateful yet also guilty that they had to take up space. But nobody seemed to mind it. Well, minus Four since they didn’t know about them yet. Maybe they just wanted to let Y feel at home before setting them off, and they knew they couldn’t rely on these numbers forever.
They were already skeptical about the fact that they didn’t give a straight answer about X.
They set the book on their night stand and lay back. Today would be a boring day if they didn’t do their “studies” right now, but really they weren’t feeling up to it. They were more so interested in the Playground, something that nobody (at least not variables) knew about. It was full of different angels, all that were numbers. And they were the lucky variable to enter it, after X of course.
Y just lay there, looking out the window and thinking about what lays out there. They weren’t locked in here, but they felt Two would be upset if they wandered around instead of working. Oh well, maybe they’d get bored enough to the point they’d start on that huge chunk of text.
Here’s to another boring day.
I went to grab a glass of water. It’s late at night and I’m feeling homesick. Physically homesick… I heard them talking through the walls. Of course, I felt the need to eavesdrop because it’s always in moments like these where something important is said and it could affect me in more ways than one, but really I just needed to get my mind off of my tightening, nauseated throat. Also I’m nosy. Incredibly nosy.
“Two?”
There was a brief shuffling before Two spoke. “Yeah, it’s me. Go back to sleep.”
Three let out a groan. I think he was stretching or maybe he was trying to wake up and failing. “What are you doing up so late?”
“I could ask the same to you.” There was a pause. “Fine… I can’t sleep.”
“Why not?”
They stuttered. “H-How can I just explain that, Three? I can’t sleep, I don’t know why!”
“Okay, okay! I’m sorry! Quiet down, you’ll wake Four and Y…”
Two sighed and groaned. Three spoke once more. “How long have you been going through this? Is it just tonight?”
“Days… I’m sorry I haven’t told you, I just didn’t want you to worry. I haven’t been able to sleep correctly ever since Six… Well… you were there.”
He hummed sadly in acknowledgement and what I would like to assume regret.
“I just wish you would’ve told me sooner.”
“I know… I’m sorry.”
“It’s alright. Is there anything I can do for you?”
“I don’t know.”
There was silence before Three continued. “Can you at least try and sleep? For my sake?”
“Maybe.” More shifting of bedsheets. “I guess so.”
Three sighed softly. “Te amo, Duo… Don’t worry, I’ll keep you safe…”
Two let out a sleepy moan, presumably relaxed and now tired. “Te amo… Bonum nox…” (Hah! I’m working on my bilinguality! They would both be so proud.)
“Goodnight…”
There was then a series of small noises that I assumed were kisses and that’s where I immediately fled the scene. I didn’t know Two and Three were like… THAT but I guess it’s pretty obvious the more I think of it. Whatever that’s not the point.
The point is, what the hell is going on around here? Everytime I ask the important questions, it just gets brushed off as something that is so painfully a lie. I wish I could get some honesty around here!
Is it so wrong to want to know what I got myself into?
