The Pen Project

Summary:

At Aubrey International School Group, the world felt a little smaller each year, as students eagerly awaited one tradition: The Pen Project.

For most, the letters were brief, a simple exchange that faded within months. But for the eight Bridgerton siblings, these correspondences would become something far more powerful.

Spanning across the years and continents, each letter would help shape their futures in ways they’d never imagine, forging bonds, revealing secrets, and setting in motion choices that would alter their lives forever

Chapter 44: The Girl in the Photograph (November 2014)

Chapter 1: Introductory letter

Chapter Text

Dear Student,

Congratulations on reaching this exciting milestone! It’s now your turn to join The Pen Project—one of the most remarkable and ambitious traditions we hold at Aubrey International School Group.

This year, as you embark on this journey, you’ll become part of a global network connecting students from our 30 campuses across the world. The purpose of The Pen Project is simple yet profound: through the exchange of letters, you have the chance to experience the world beyond your own, to hear about life from a different perspective, and to build a connection that could last long beyond your school years.

Today, you’ll receive the name and details of your new pen pal. Their letter may travel from a nearby country or from halfway across the globe, and each exchange is an invitation to learn about their world—their culture, language, and way of life. Through these letters, we hope you’ll gain a new understanding of the richness of our world, as well as a fresh perspective on your own experiences.

Remember, this is more than just a school assignment; it’s a unique opportunity for personal growth. Approach this project with curiosity, empathy, and openness. Your form tutor will check your first letter to help you get started, after which the correspondence is yours to shape. Begin by introducing yourself, sharing some of your own experiences, and including a photograph if you’re comfortable. Perhaps share a bit about your favorite places, hobbies, or even dreams for the future.

While some of you may only exchange a few letters, others may find a friendship that could last for years. Whatever your experience, each letter is a chance to connect, to discover, and to reflect on the things that unite us and those that make each of us unique.

We hope you embrace this project wholeheartedly and come away with new friendships, lasting memories, and an appreciation for the many ways we all see the world. Take this opportunity seriously—it may just surprise you.

With excitement for the journey ahead,
Agatha Danbury
Head of the Aubrey International School Group

Every year, around 2,000 teenagers received the same letter, stirring a whirlwind of emotions as they prepared to embark on The Pen Project. For some, the thought of writing to a stranger felt like a chore—a tedious task to check off their school requirements. They grumbled at the prospect, feeling burdened by the pressure to compose something meaningful when all they wanted was to focus on their busy lives. Others, however, greeted the project with genuine excitement and anticipation, viewing it as an opportunity to connect with someone from a different corner of the globe. They eagerly envisioned the exchange of stories, the potential for friendship, and the thrill of learning about a culture vastly different from their own.

Yet, not all students approached the task with honesty. A few were keen to craft elaborate tales, creating fictional narratives to shield their true selves from the eyes of their pen pals. They painted lives filled with adventures, achievements, and happiness, hiding the struggles or loneliness they faced in their daily lives. In contrast, some students, overwhelmed or uncertain about their writing abilities, enlisted friends to help them craft their letters, hoping to disguise their lack of confidence with the assistance of others.

Regardless of their feelings, all these students eventually sat down with a collective sigh, the weight of expectation settling in. They picked up their pens, the ink poised to spill their thoughts onto the page, as they began their first letter to someone who could potentially become a new friend. With each stroke of the pen, they embarked on a journey that might lead to unexpected connections and meaningful exchanges, even if they couldn't fully comprehend the impact this project would have on their lives.
