In the heart of the kingdom, nestled between the rolling hills and glittering rivers, stood the royal castle. Its high towers reached towards the sky, adorned with banners of white and gold fluttering in the gentle breeze. The castle grounds were alive with the buzz of preparations for White Day—a cherished celebration where the kingdom came together to honor those dear to their hearts.
The grand hall was adorned with garlands of flowers, the air filled with the sweet scent of cherry blossoms. Servants bustled about, arranging tables laden with exquisite sweets and delicacies, while the castle’s musicians rehearsed merry tunes that would soon fill the air. Laughter and excitement echoed throughout the grounds, but amidst the joyful chaos, a quiet corner of the castle gardens held a different atmosphere.
Prince Kanade sat by a tranquil fountain, feeling the soft wind going through her hair. The sunlight danced on the water's surface, casting shimmering patterns on her face, yet her mind seemed to drift elsewhere. She absently traced the edge of her teacup, lost in thought, as the weight of her royal duties hung heavy on her shoulders.
A tray of beautifully brewed tea sat beside her, untouched, cooling under the gentle breeze. The celebration felt overwhelming, a cacophony of joy that contrasted sharply with the emotions swirling within her.
Suddenly, the sound of footsteps broke through her reverie. Kanade looked up to see Mizuki, the kingdom’s loyal knight, striding toward her with an air of purpose. Clad in polished silver armor that gleamed under the sun, Mizuki exuded confidence and strength, traits that had earned them the respect of both the royal family and the people.
“Your Highness,” Mizuki greeted, bowing deeply, their voice playful but respectful. “It’s White Day, and yet here you are, hiding away from the celebrations.”
Kanade smiled faintly, her heart lifting a little at the sight of her friend. “Oh Mizuki, always knowing where to find me.”
Mizuki straightened up, their playful demeanor never faltering. “I have my ways. Besides, it seems my duty as your knight extends to ensuring that the prince doesn’t miss out on the kingdom’s festivities.”
Kanade glanced at the untouched tray beside her, feeling a gentle warmth in her chest. “And what brings you to my corner of the garden, Knight?”
“Well,” Mizuki began, their tone lightening, “if anyone deserves a proper White Day treat, it’s you. I’ve brought you something to make sure you don’t miss out on the fun.”
From behind their back, Mizuki produced a small, neatly wrapped box. The delicate ribbon shimmered in the sunlight, and the enticing aroma of chocolate wafted from within. “I hope you’re ready for a little indulgence!”
Kanade’s eyes widened in surprise. “You made these?”
Mizuki chuckled, their smile brightening. “Not alone! The children from the kitchens insisted on helping me. They were so excited to create something special for you.”
Kanade’s laughter, soft and musical, filled the garden. “You always charm the kingdom’s young ones, don’t you?”
“They charm me as well,” Mizuki replied with a grin. “They have a knack for bringing out the best in me. But really, you deserve this more than anyone. You do so much for the kingdom, yet you rarely allow yourself a moment of indulgence.”
Kanade carefully opened the box, her fingers delicate as she examined the assortment of chocolates. Each piece was beautifully crafted, some adorned with colorful sprinkles and others drizzled with intricate patterns. The simple gesture made her smile widen, and she felt a sense of warmth spreading through her.
“Thank you, Mizuki. This is… truly thoughtful.”
Mizuki watched her, feeling a surge of joy at Kanade’s reaction. Seeing her smile always brightened their day, a reminder of why they had pledged their loyalty to her—not just as a knight to a prince, but as a friend to someone they deeply cared about.
As Kanade picked up a chocolate and brought it to her lips, Mizuki spoke again, their voice softening. “You give so much to everyone else, Kanade. Sometimes I wonder… who’s looking out for you?”
Kanade’s hand paused briefly, her gaze shifting to meet Mizuki’s. For a moment, the weight of that question settled between them, unspoken but understood. “I have the kingdom,” she said softly, her eyes thoughtful. “And I have you.”
Mizuki’s chest tightened at her words, a sense of warmth flooding their heart. “Then I’ll always be here,” they promised, their voice steady. “Whenever you need a break from all the duties and expectations, whenever you need someone to remind you that it’s okay to just… be Kanade, not the prince. I’ll be by your side.”
Kanade smiled, her heart warming at Mizuki’s unwavering loyalty. “I couldn’t ask for a better knight.”
For a while, they sat together in silence, the soft rustling of the trees and the distant laughter from the festivities filling the air. The garden seemed to be its own little world, where Kanade could breathe and Mizuki could simply enjoy her presence.
But after a while, Mizuki’s playful nature resurfaced. “You know,” they began, glancing at her tea tray, “I don’t see why you should have to sit here with cold tea when there’s a whole celebration going on. How about we take this chocolate box and join the fun?”
Kanade raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “The knight encouraging the prince to abandon her duties?”
“Not abandon,” Mizuki corrected with a smirk. “Just… take a break. Besides, I happen to know the children are dying to see you. They’ve been asking about you all day. You’d be doing the kingdom a service by making an appearance.”
Kanade laughed, shaking her head, her spirit lifting. “Always so persuasive.”
“I try,” Mizuki said with a wink, their playful demeanor infectious. “Just imagine their faces when you show up! You’ll be the highlight of their day.”
Kanade glanced back at the grand hall, where the sounds of laughter and music beckoned. “Maybe you’re right. They do bring me joy.”
Mizuki extended their arm with a flourish, their grin wide and encouraging. “Your Highness?”
Kanade looped her arm through Mizuki’s, her smile lingering as they walked toward the castle, the box of chocolates nestled safely between them. “Thank you, Mizuki.”
“Anything for you, Kanade,” Mizuki replied softly, their usual teasing tone fading into something more sincere. “And just think of all the smiling faces you’ll bring joy to.”
As they made their way back toward the festivities, Kanade felt her heart lighten. She knew her presence would mean the world to the children, and Mizuki’s companionship made the prospect even more delightful.
Entering the grand hall, the atmosphere enveloped them—a whirlwind of colors, laughter, and the sweet melodies of the musicians filled the air. Children darted around, their excitement palpable, while adults mingled with warm smiles.
Kanade’s eyes sparkled as she spotted the children gathered near a table, their tiny hands busy decorating cookies with colorful icing and sprinkles. The moment they caught sight of her, their faces lit up with pure delight.
“Prince Kanade!” they exclaimed, rushing toward her in a jubilant throng.
“Look at our cookies!” one little girl chirped, holding up a particularly lopsided creation with pride.
“They’re beautiful!” Kanade exclaimed, kneeling down to meet their eye level. “You’ve all done such an amazing job.”
Mizuki stood back for a moment, watching the scene unfold with a content smile. It warmed their heart to see Kanade surrounded by the very joy she often provided to others.
The children clamored around her, showing off their creations and asking her to taste each one. “Try mine, Prince!” another child exclaimed, handing her a cookie decorated with a wild array of colors.
Kanade took a bite, her expression thoughtful. “Delicious! I think you’re all excellent bakers. We should have a baking day together soon!”
The children cheered, their laughter echoing through the hall. Mizuki couldn’t help but feel a swell of pride watching Kanade connect with them. It was moments like this that reminded them of the true strength and kindness of the prince.
Eventually, as the celebration continued, Kanade noticed a group of children gathered around Mizuki, eagerly listening as they told an animated story about a brave knight and their adventures. The knight’s expressive gestures and playful tone captivated their attention, and Kanade couldn’t help but smile at the sight.
“Mizuki, you’re going to steal my job as the royal storyteller” she teased, stepping closer.
“Maybe I’ll start charging for my stories,” Mizuki replied with a mock-seriousness that made Kanade laugh. “All proceeds go to the royal chocolate fund!”
“Consider it a deal!” Kanade responded, her eyes twinkling with mirth.
As the evening wore on, Kanade and Mizuki moved among the festivities, sharing laughter and stories with the children and the villagers. The warm glow of the lanterns and the scent of freshly baked goods created an inviting atmosphere that made Kanade feel at ease, her earlier worries forgotten.
———
At last, as the sun began to set, casting a golden hue over the celebration, Kanade found a moment to pull Mizuki aside from the crowd. They stepped into a quieter alcove of the hall, where the sound of music and laughter was a gentle murmur in the background.
“Thank you for today, Mizuki,” Kanade said, leaning against the cool stone wall, her expression earnest. “I really needed this. I tend to get lost in all the expectations, but you’re always there to remind me what truly matters.”
Mizuki leaned against the wall beside her, their eyes warm. “It’s my honor, Kanade. You deserve happiness, especially after all you do for everyone. It’s important to take time for yourself.”
Kanade nodded, her gaze drifting back to the party, where the children were dancing and playing games, their laughter filling the air like music. “Sometimes, I feel like I’m just a figurehead. But with you, I feel more like myself.”
“Good,” Mizuki replied, their voice steady. “That’s how it should be. You’re not just a prince; you’re Kanade. Your kindness, your creativity, the way you care for the people of this kingdom—it’s what makes you special. Never forget that.”
Kanade’s heart swelled at Mizuki’s words. They had a way of cutting through her worries, anchoring her in the moment. In the quiet between them, she felt an urge to bridge the distance, to express the gratitude and warmth blooming in her chest.
“Mizuki,” she began, her voice soft, “I—”
But before she could finish, a sudden flurry of excitement erupted from the hall as a group of children dashed toward them, giggling and breathless.
“Prince Kanade! Knight Mizuki! Come quick!” one of them shouted, pointing toward the center of the hall.
Kanade and Mizuki exchanged amused glances before following the children back into the throng. As they approached, they saw a makeshift stage where a few of the kingdom’s young performers had gathered, preparing for a surprise act. The children were all buzzing with anticipation, eager to see what their friends had planned.
“Everyone, gather around!” one of the children called, their voice ringing out over the crowd. “We have a special performance just for the prince!”
Mizuki leaned down toward Kanade, whispering with a playful smile, “Looks like you’re the star of the show, Your Highness.”
Kanade laughed, her earlier nerves dissipating in the excitement of the moment. “Let’s see what they have for us.”
As the performance began, the children sang and danced with all their hearts, pouring their energy and joy into the act. Their laughter echoed through the hall, filling the air with a vibrant energy that enveloped everyone present.
Kanade watched, mesmerized, her heart swelling with pride for the little ones who brought so much life to the celebration. Mizuki stood by her side, occasionally glancing down to catch her eye, a shared understanding passing between them.
When the performance ended, the children received raucous applause, their faces lighting up with joy. Kanade clapped enthusiastically, her eyes shining with delight as she caught a glimpse of the pride in Mizuki’s gaze.
As the crowd began to disperse, Kanade felt a gentle tug on her sleeve. Looking down, she saw one of the children, their cheeks flushed with excitement.
“prince, can you tell us a story now?” they pleaded, eyes wide and hopeful.
Kanade glanced at Mizuki, who gave a slight nod, a playful grin tugging at their lips. “Of course! I would love to share a story with all of you. But first…” She turned back to the crowd. “Who would like some chocolates?”
The children erupted into cheers, and the air filled with laughter once again. Kanade took the opportunity to distribute the chocolates Mizuki had brought, each piece a little treasure for the excited kids.
Mizuki watched as Kanade knelt among the children, telling them stories of brave knights and daring adventures while they savored their treats. The joy in her voice, the way she engaged with them, made Mizuki’s heart swell with admiration.
After the stories were shared and the chocolates devoured, the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a warm glow throughout the hall.
As the festivities wound down, Kanade and Mizuki stepped outside into the cool evening air. The garden glowed under the soft light of lanterns, casting playful shadows against the cobblestone path.
“I think I’ll have to make this a tradition,” Kanade mused, her eyes twinkling. “Sharing stories and chocolates with the children—it brings me so much joy.”
“Just like you bring joy to them,” Mizuki replied, leaning against a nearby pillar, their demeanor relaxed. “You have a gift for making people feel seen and valued, Kanade.”
Kanade smiled, feeling a flush of warmth at the compliment. “You’re always so encouraging. I could never do it without your support.”
“Then it’s settled. I’ll always be by your side,” Mizuki affirmed, their voice sincere. “Whether you’re a prince, a storyteller, or just Kanade, I’ll always be here.”
Kanade met Mizuki’s gaze, the connection between them deepening in the quiet moment. With a gentle smile, she intertwined her fingers with Mizuki’s, a gesture both comforting and reassuring.
As they stood together, the stars began to twinkle above them, a serene blanket of darkness adorned with countless lights.
“Shall we take a moment to ourselves?” Kanade suggested, tilting her head toward a small bench beneath a cherry blossom tree, its petals beginning to flutter down like soft pink snowflakes.
“Absolutely,” Mizuki agreed, their smile warm as they followed her to the bench.
