Summary
They do run, in the end, but not away- in their naivety, they reach out to Morton in an attempt to shove him out of the way. Within that second the snake’s shadow fully blots out the sun; within the next, it descends upon Morton and devours him whole.
In that moment, he looks to their eyes like every little human they’ve ever failed to save. Of course, none weigh as terribly upon their conscience as Rory and Amy. It’s always them with this face. (It always will be, until there’s nothing left of them but the branching fractals that count their every success and every failure as the same.)
