They sat in silence for a while, Snape's breathing gradually evening out as the aftershocks subsided. Sirius tried very hard not to notice how perfectly they fit together, or how Snape smelled of potions and rain, intoxicating and familiar.

Slowly, rigidly, Snape allowed himself to be positioned against Sirius's chest. The moment firm pressure met Snape’s back, a rush of relief washed over him, but it was tinged with something more—a dangerous awareness that set Sirius’ heart racing.

"Bellatrix," Snape said suddenly, breaking the silence. "She used it on your brother?"
"Among others." Sirius's voice was tight. "Family tradition, you might say."
"The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black," Snape muttered darkly. "Always pure, always cruel."
