Work Text:
In the dimly lit Mortkranken lab, the usual hum of work and experimentation was replaced by a rare tranquillity as all the other students had retired for the night. Yuri Isami, self-proclaimed genius scientist, still in his lab coat but now slightly disheveled, sat on his assistant and lover Jiro Kirisaki’s lap as they observed one of their rare breaks reading together. He held up a scientific journal, his face scrunched up in blatant disgust.
“Jiro-kun! Listen to this!” Yuri declared, waving the book dramatically. “‘The Evolution of Anomalous Phenomena in Post-Modern Medicine.’ What a pompous title for a book that reads like it was written by a sleep-deprived worm!”
Jiro, seated comfortably with his arms securely wrapped around Yuri’s waist, was content to listen. His book was bookmarked, closed and placed on the table in front of them.
“Its authenticity is plausible, considering how limited such information is to the general population.” Jiro commented, his voice flat. “Though, I suppose most of what’s written there would be considered pedestrian by your standards.”
Yuri grinned, clearly enjoying the chance to mock the unskilled germs that dared speak on his area of expertise. “Pedestrian? This is barely worth the paper it’s printed on! And look at this section—‘The Future of Anomalous Medicine: A Paradigm Shift.’ As if any paradigm could shift without my genius.”
Jiro hummed, his fingers moving to caress Yuri’s hip. “Everyone has an opinion about the future of anomalous medicine. Yours, however, seems to be the most logical, though.”
Yuri’s face turned a little pink as Jiro’s touch lingered, his irritation momentarily forgotten. “Logical? I’d call it revolutionary! The author of this book wouldn’t know a breakthrough if it hit him in the face.”
Jiro leaned in, pressing a kiss to Yuri’s cheek, and Yuri flinched. “W-what was that for?!”
“Just because.” Jiro replied, his tone steady. His hands continued their gentle exploration, moving to Yuri’s lower back.
Fighting off a blush, Yuri coughed trying to maintain his composure. “A-and what’s with the sudden affection? Trying to distract me from my expert observations?”
“Distract you? No,” Jiro said with a faint huff. “Just reminding you that even the greatest minds—”
He pressed a kiss to Yuri’s nose, cutting himself off as Yuri’s eyes widened in surprise. “—need moments of human affection.” Jiro finished, his tone dry but affectionate.
Yuri, now visibly flustered, huffed in mock indignation. “Y-you know, your attempts at affection are almost as misguided as this book’s theories. But—” He looked away, his voice softening, “—I suppose… I can tolerate them.”
Jiro hummed, his fingers gently massaging Yuri’s back, as he leaned in to kiss the side of Yuri’s neck. Yuri ignores his ministrations and tries to focus on his book but he gets increasingly restless, shifting slightly at each punctuated kiss on the base of his neck.
This goes on for five minutes, and then…
“Jiro-kun! Break is over! I think it’s about time we get back to work, after all-” Yuri exclaims as he hurriedly untangles himself and jumps off Jiro’s lap. “…the specimens we needed have finally come in! There’s much to be do- ACK!
However, before he could finish, Jiro tugged him back down. Wrapping his arms around his captain’s torso, Jiro rested his head in the crook of Yuri’s neck. Yuri turned beet red as he wriggled around, trying to get out of his grasp, though his struggle was futile as the stronger of the two was obvious.
“Jiro-kun! Let me go this instant! We have work to-“
Jiro interjected, “The minimal time needed for a break is 30 minutes, but you’ve only rested for 10 minutes.”, He continued before Yuri could retort, “You also haven’t slept in the past 4 days, if I let you continue like this, you’ll end up making a mistake and all our progress will end up down the drain.”
“I, THE GREAT YURI ISAMI, DO NOT MAKE MISTAKES!!” Yuri yelled; an offended scowl set on his face.
“Then take a proper break, Yuri.”
Yuri slightly shivered as Jiro murmured against his ear, his anger melted away as his hand found Jiro’s and slowly intertwined their fingers. “Isn’t that what we’re doing?!”
Jiro’s lips curled into a rare, soft smile as he leaned in and captured Yuri’s lips in a gentle, sweet kiss. Yuri’s eyes widened momentarily, then they fluttered shut and he responded to the kiss, his lips parting slightly. Jiro pulled him impossibly closer and Yuri found himself clutching to Jiro’s hair as the kiss deepened. When they pulled apart, Yuri was breathless, flushed and dazed.
“Ahem! Well, consider yourself lucky. It just so happens that I haven’t finished this mediocre journal, so our rest period shall be prolonged!” Yuri announced with a huff, playing with his fingers as a distraction from his embarrassment.
“Mm.” Jiro hummed as he placed another quick, tender kiss on Yuri’s lips. He picked up his book and continued reading as Yuri picked up where he left off, making snarky and snide comments here and there.
At one point, Yuri dropped the book and went on a full-on tirade about the ‘ludicrous’ book and it’s ‘filthy mammal’ of an author. Jiro paid close attention, interjecting and giving his opinion when necessary, and making sure to give an occasional squeeze and kiss if Yuri got too worked up.
They lost track of time and eventually, Yuri ended up falling asleep as his four all-nighters caught up to him. Jiro, not wanting to wake him up, subtly adjusted his captain’s position into one that was more comfortable.
‘At least, it’s more comfortable than the examination table.’ Jiro thought with a small fond smirk as he kissed Yuri on the forehead. Then he shifted a bit and continued his book, periodically adjusting Yuri on his lap and making sure his neck wouldn’t hurt too much once he woke up.
Soon enough, Jiro found himself getting sleepy and ended up taking a short nap as well.
What was supposed to be a 30-minute break, ended up being a 4-hour nap.
…
“Jiro-kun! Wake up! I slept off and we’re behind schedule! Why didn’t you wake me up when our break ended?!”
“You slept off 20 minutes after our break ended, though.”
“Then why didn’t you inform me?!”
“You were too tired to read properly, and I believed it would be pointless to go back to work in that state.”
“…Well yes, I was slightly fatigued, but an hour would have been more than enough to regain my strength, why did you wait for 4 hours to pass?!”
“Actually, no. An hour would not have been enough, as the body needs at least 4 hours of sleep every 24-hour interval to function properly. Not to mention you- mn!”
“That’s enough!”
