Jetfire couldn't sleep.
Shocker, he knew, but for he couldn't sleep for one reason.
The Maximal and Predacons' entire existence.
So many questions, so much confusion.
He felt Red Alert stir beside him, optics blinking open. He looked up at his partner.
"Jet...?" He mumbled. Jetfire traced Red's face with his finger.
"Hi, love."
Red Alert's hand came up to the faded Autobot symbol on Jetfire's chassis, lazily tracing it, returning the intimate gesture.
"What time is it?"
"Not time to get up. Long before then, actually."
Red Alert sighed as he relaxed back down, holding Jetfire's side, and using his shoulder as a pillow.
"Why are you up?"
"Just thinking."
Red Alert hummed as he shut his optics, ready for recharge again.
"Red?"
"Mm?"
"How do you think the Maximals came into existence?"
They both had learned that apparently, the Maximals and the Predacons were from a future where the Allspark was never returned to Cybertron.
Which was fine until Jetfire started thinking about it.
"...what?"
"How did the Maximals come into existence?"
Red Alert snuggled in closer to his partner. "I don't know, probably the same way we did..."
"But they came from a world without the Allspark, how would they actually come into existence?"
"...why are you asking this?"
Jetfire sighed. "It's been in my mind for a while now."
"And you're losing recharge over it?"
"Yes. We were the last ones here. If they didn't go back in time, then we still would've been the last ones. But they exist. And there's more than two of them."
Red Alert buried his face into Jetfire. "I don't know Jet..."
"Primal said that Galvatron and Nemesis were the future versions of Optimus and Megatron. Perhaps they are the future versions of ourselves?"
Red Alert only hummed, trying to fall back into recharge.
"But then again, there's more than two Maximals. In fact, we also have to account the Predacons as well.
And there's no way that eight bots came from the two of us.
Let's say they did come from us, how? Did we die and come back as eight bots?
But the Maximals have mentioned that they left Cybertron with over 200. So how-"
"Jetfire, I love you, but if you don't shut up, I'm going to sleep on the couch."
Jetfire fake gasped as he tightened his hold on Red Alert. "You hate that couch, would you really sleep on it?"
Red Alert squirmed, but with no real intention of leaving. "You're talking too much, and it's late! We both have work tomorrow."
"Well, I'm sorry, this whole situation is confusing!"
Red Alert stopped squirming, relaxing in Jetfire's embrace.
"I know. But now is not the time to try to figure it out. Now, is time for recharge."
Jetfire relaxed as well, hoping that his overcharged processor would relax as well, providing him with sleep.
