Work Text:
Engineer grunted as he hefted his toolbox into his arms, carrying it over to the other end of his nest next to the intelligence room. The match today was intense, with both teams pushing hard to capture the control point. He set the toolbox down, hefting up his wrench and starting on building a new sentry. Footsteps coming down the hall made him look up, expecting an enemy, but instead his Soldier came barreling down the hall, and he relaxed.
"Well, howdy there Soldier boy!" He said, smiling as the war fanatic came over, stopping in front of him.
"HELLO ENGINEER!" He half shouted, adjusting his rocket launcher in his hands.
"Didja need somethin' Solly?" Engie asked, moving back to work on his sentry.
"Negatory! I simply wanted to check up on how you are doing!" Soldier said, watching as Engie worked on his sentry.
"Aw, well that's mighty kind of ya Soldier boy!" Engie replied, smiling as he worked. Soldier had seen Engie make his sentries many times, and he saw that he was missing a piece for the leg. He spotted the piece lying on the floor and picked it up, moving over to Engie and handing it to him.
"Oh! Thank you Solly!" he said, taking the piece from the war fanatic. For the briefest moment, their hands touched, skin against skin in the middle of a battle. But then Soldier had straightened up, a barely noticeable blush fanning across his face.
"GOODBYE!" he said before taking off down the hall. Engie watched him go, chuckling softly and turning back to his sentries.
About half an hour later, the teams were still fighting hard, and only a few enemies had managed to come around to Engies nest. He was working on a dispenser, unaware of the cloaked Spy coming towards him. The Frenchman smiled smugly, raising his butterfly knife and preparing to stab the Southerner. A dull thud and a strangled cry made Engie turn around to see the Spy’s corpse lying on the floor, blood streaming from a wound on his head. Soldier stood over him, shovel in hand and glaring down at the BLU. A smile spread across Engies face.
"Well, thank ya Soldier Boy! Didn't even hear that spook comin'!" he said, rubbing the back of his neck as the Spys body dissolved, being picked up by respawn. He looked up at Soldier and saw that he looked rather battered, and his smile faded.
"Are you alright, Hoss? You look a little worse for wear." He asked, motioning for Soldier to stand by the half-finished dispenser. He quickly finished it, and the red healing mist poured out and onto Soldier, his bruises fading and cuts knitting closed.
"That feel better Solly?" Engie asked, smiling again when the other nodded. The war fanatic cleared his throat, glancing down.
"Would it be okay with you if I were to stay here?" he asked, and Engie lit up.
"Why, of course Soldier Boy! I'd love for you to stay." Soldier grinned and swept the Southener into a hug, making the shorter male yelp in surprise. Soldier quickly set him back down, coughing and looking away awkwardly. Engie simply chuckled, shaking his head.
"Well, c'mon, that intelligence ain't going to guard itself." He said, turning to work on one of his sentries. Soldier smiled and moved to stand beside him, his shovel in hand. No more Spys came down that way for a bit.
