All About Action

Summary:

Enid has a massive crush on Wednesday. Wednesday has a massive crush on Enid. Both of them, much to Yoko’s agony, are too stupid to realize that their crushes are very much corresponded. Wednesday wants to confess, but she doesn’t know how. Still, she will have to do it if she doesn't want to lose Enid to someone else.

“Words weren’t enough. They never are, really, when it comes to love.”

Notes:

Hi! This was my first time writing fanfic and my first time writing in English, so please excuse any mistakes and the evident displays of inexperience. This first work is not perfect by any means, but I really enjoyed writing it. I hope it's also enjoyable to read, thanks for stopping by!

Chapter Text

"Girl, just tell her."

Enid buried her face between her hands. "I can't do that, Yoko! What if she doesn't want to talk to me ever again?"

"You are being" -the vampire took a sip of blood- "way overdramatic."

Enid rested her chin on her hand and sighed. “Maybe.”

For a few seconds, they stayed like that, Enid deep in thought and Yoko trying to enjoy her lunch. This, though, was becoming rather impossible.

“Alright, stop with the sad puppy face," said Yoko. She put a hand on Enid's shoulder. "I don't know how she will respond, but I'm sure she won't stop being friends with you."

Enid gave her an unsure look.

"I mean, you know her way better than I do, but anyone could tell she cares about you." Yoko gave Enid her best reassuring smile. It quickly turned into a teasing grin. "Also, if she doesn't see the value of being friends with Enid Sinclair, I will replace all her clothes with an entirely new, hot pink wardrobe."

That image made Enid laugh. "Thank you, you are right. " She smiled gratefully.

Yoko, happy after getting a smile out of her friend, went back to her lunch.

"As per usual," she said between bites.

Enid could only nod and smile. "As per usual.”

After a few seconds in comfortable silence, Enid turned around abruptly to face her friend once again. “I don’t have a sad puppy face!” she whined.

Yoko could only burst out laughing.

After her classes, Enid went back to her room. Wednesday was in the middle of her writing session, so the werewolf decided to just lie down on her bed and listen to the sound of her roommate's fingers slamming against the keys. She was still thinking about her conversation with Yoko.

She knew Wednesday cared about her. Well, she was pretty sure she did. She wasn't very vocal about it, but Enid could tell through her actions.

Enid may be oblivious sometimes, but she wasn't stupid. She saw what Wednesday did for her.

How she had moved that creepy murder board because it made Enid sick, or how she had helped her win the Poe Cup (maybe that was more about beating Bianca, but nonetheless). Even though she hid it, Enid realized that Wednesday had put effort in being grateful for the snood, even though it was obvious she didn't know how to react to the present.

Enid could see the way she was always nearby when her classes ended, just so they could walk together. Or the way Wednesday pretended to care a little bit about Nevermore gossip when Thing wasn’t around to listen to Enid’s rant.

She could feel how Wednesday held her sleeve when they stood next to each other, and how she pulled on it gently when they were about to part different ways.

She noticed how the werewolves who used to pick on her had started acting all nice around her, and she knew it had something to do with her roommate by the way they shot terrified glances at her.

Enid turned her head so that she could see Wednesday's back. She stared at the back of her braids as she wrote steadily. Sometimes she wished she could read her mind. Or that she would be honest about her feelings, that would work as well.

Sometimes, Enid felt like Wednesday wanted to talk about how she felt, but she always restrained herself. The werewolf could still remember the way her roommate had looked at her when she almost moved to Yoko’s room. She hadn’t asked her to stay, but she had looked at her with this odd begging look on her face.

How would Wednesday look at her if she told her how she felt? What would she say? Was Enid delusional to think maybe she would ki-

“Enid.”

Enid had been so deep in thought that Wednesday's sudden voice startled her. When had the clicking sound stopped? She hadn’t even realized.

The werewolf realized her roommate was waiting for a response. “Er sorry, what is it?”

“I can feel you staring at me.” Wednesday turned the chair around to face her.

“How can you tell?” asked Enid, hoping she could change the topic before being questioned about why she was staring.

“My power reaches limits you will never be able to begin to understand,” she deadpanned as a response.

Meanwhile, Thing climbed to a shell on top of her roommate's head and pointed at the beautiful wall mounted sword Uncle Fester had gifted her niece last Christmas. Enid looked at it and saw her own reflection staring back at her on the spotless metal. A gentle chuckle escaped her lips, and she turned her eyes back to Wednesday so she wouldn’t realize Thing had betrayed her, revealing her little trick.

Thankfully, Wednesday assumed she was laughing at her answer. “Why were you looking at me?”

Well, maybe Enid should have thrown Thing under the bus to distract Wednesday from asking that.

“You know…” Enid sat up on the edge of her bed to give herself more time to think of what to say. “I was just thinking and happened to be looking in your directions, but I wasn’t, like, looking at you or anything,” she mumbled, with the most convincing tone she could manage. Which wasn't convincing, at all.

The excuse wasn’t a bad one, it was actually a believable and normal reason, but Enid’s insecurity made Wednesday suspicious. In her struggle to change the topic to avoid, a question popped into her mind.

“Why? Was I distracting you from your writing?” she said, as she smiled teasingly.

That seemed to work, it had caught Wednesday off guard. Enid saw how her roommate's eyebrows raised a little bit. It was almost an unnoticeable change on her face, but she had learned to see and understand those changes.

“No,” Wednesday said, the confidence in her tone faltering slightly. She looked like she was going to continue, but closed her mouth after a second of struggling.

Well, that was unusual. Rarely ever was Wednesday Addams left speechless, and Enid had just found the new pleasure of being the cause of it. She continued, wishing to see more of this side of her. “Then why did you call me out on it?”

Wednesday doubted for a moment. She looked like she wanted to say something, but wasn't sure how to phrase it. It surprised Enid to see her so unsure, frowning her eyebrows slightly. She found it endearing, too.

"I was just wondering," she finally spoke slowly, as her eyes stayed glued to the ground "if everything was okay."

Enid had to stop her own jaw from dropping to the ground. Had Wednesday just admitted to being worried about her? She knew Wednesday cared for her, but she had never been that straight forward about it. When she expressed worry, she usually hid it behind half-truths or macabre comments: ‘Thing missed you’, ‘If he breaks your heart, I’ll nail gun his’. That’s the kind of stuff she said.

Enid tried to remember the last time Wednesday had said something like that, but she couldn't. It made her think of the hug they shared after defeating Tyler. That was the moment when she had realized that Wednesday truly cared about her. When, despite her aversion to hugging, she had broken her own rule because she had seen in Enid's eyes how much she needed that hug.

If there was still a small doubt within her that Wednesday only acted for her own benefit, it had faded that night. Her roommate had seen the plea all over her face, and she had Enid granted what she was silently begging for. That's when she had realized that, even if Wednesday wasn't vocal about it, she did care deeply for other people. For her. You just had to pay attention to her actions. At the end of the day, Wednesday Addams was all about actions.

The words lingered between them for a few seconds, Wednesday’s worried and sincere tone resonating inside Enid’s head. It made her stomach turn, too.

Her roommate seemed to suddenly realize what she had just said and rushed to explain herself, lifting her eyes from the ground and attempting to go back to her usual emotionless manner.

“I couldn’t help but notice you came into the room without uttering a single word, and then you stayed quiet for over ten minutes. Before today, I didn’t know you had the ability to remain silent for that long. I assumed you wanted to tell me something, but didn't wish to interrupt my writing, so you were just staring at me waiting for me to notice or finish. I said something to indicate there was no need for you to wait."

Enid came back to reality. "Right." Wednesday still waited for a response. "Right! No, not at all. Nothing I wanted to tell you", she said. Only that I may be in love with you , she thought. “I just have a lot on my mind, that’s all.”

Wednesday still looked unsatisfied with that answer. “Is there something troubling you?” she asked, with an emotionless tone. Still, Enid could see the worry on the bottom of her eyes. It was quickly replaced by a dangerous glow. “Is there someone bothering you?”

Enid shook her head passionately, scared about what her roommate would do if she believed that was the case. “No, I swear! Don’t worry, everything’s fine.” She gave her the best reassuring smile she could muster.

Wednesday looked at her suspiciously one last time before giving up and heading back to her chair to continue with her writing. “Alright, do not hesitate to tell me if you need me to execute revenge. It’s been a while since I got to torture someone, and I could really use the fun.”

Enid wanted to know why Wednesday was so worried just because she had been quiet for ten minutes, which, by the way, offensive. After hesitating for a few seconds, she couldn’t resist the curiosity. “I had no idea you paid this much attention to the way I usually act.” She said, trying to sound indifferent while looking at her nails.

Wednesday turned her chair to face her. “I am merely observant, as everyone should be. It’s only natural that I notice a change in your usual behavior.” She added, while the corner of her lips twitched. “Although one needs nothing more than functional ears to realize you are always talking, Enid Sinclair.”

“Hey!” Enid exclaimed offended, even though she had a smile on her face.

“I didn’t say I found it to be a flaw,” Wednesday said simply.

“You enjoy listening to me, then?” teased Enid as her grin grew.

Wednesday hesitated for a moment before answering. Enid was expecting her to deny it and call her annoying for the tenth time that week, but she looked conflicted. That look again. That ‘I need to say something, but I don’t know how to say it’ look. After a few seconds, she finally opened her mouth, and was about to speak when the sound of a cheesy K-pop song filled the room and cut her off.

"Crap! I forgot I was meeting Yoko to study” -she checked the hour on her phone- “fifteen minutes ago!" Enid grabbed her phone and saw the several messages her best friend had already sent before calling. She answered the call and blurted an apology before Yoko could speak. "I'm so, so sorry, I'll be there in a minute."

She hung up and grabbed her bag, but turned to face Wednesday again before leaving.

"I'm sorry, I promised we would study together for tomorrow's exam," Enid apologized. She didn't move, though. She wanted to know what was Wednesday about to say.

But Wednesday didn't seem to share that wish. "Go, then." Wednesday said simply, and turned her chair again to go back to her writing.

"Bye, see you later!" Enid rushed to the door, but turned one more time before closing the door, with a teasing grin. "This way I won't distract you anymore, enjoy your writing."

Wednesday didn't acknowledge the comment and kept facing the typewriter, even though she didn’t resume her writing.

Right before Enid closed the door, she heard her roommate saying to Thing, a dangerous tone in her voice, "If you laugh, I'll cut your fingers off."

She chuckled, and broke into a run, as if she wasn't going to be twenty minutes late anyway.

Hold on , she thought to herself as she skipped through the hallways, Thing can laugh?
