Ed sets a blanket down on their front porch, it’s a warm evening apart from a slight breeze from the ocean. He grabs a couple of glasses and the bottle of wine he’d bought from the market earlier that day. Stede joins shortly after with some biscuits they’d baked that morning, sitting next to Ed on the blanket.
“It’s a beautiful evening.” Stede observes.
“Sure is.” Ed agrees, pouring them both a glass of wine. “Cheers.”
“Cheers, darling.”
Stede’s head finds its way to Ed’s shoulder as he watches the waves lap at the shore, illuminated in a beautiful silver by the full moon. He thinks back to the time they were apart, he’d spent many a night alone in the dark, the moon his only companion. The one to listen to his woes as he wondered whether Ed was doing the same. Hoping desperately that he missed Stede half as much as Stede ached to be back by his side.
He’d spend long nights dreaming of a future, one where the moon shone bright and proud as two lovers were reunited. He’s still in awe that it came true, he feels lucky everyday that he was given this chance to be welcomed back into Ed’s heart.
Not only had he been welcomed back but it had come with such warmth, well after the initial interactions anyway. It had been more than he could ever dream of and he is truly living a life that he would fight tooth and nail to keep.
Now the moon was a witness to something truly special, a connection that goes deeper than the ocean. His heart aches with how much he loves this beautiful man beside him.
“You know I love you right?” Stede asks, breaking the silence.
Stede had to be sure that Ed knows just how much he loves him, that he never forgets how treasured he is.
“I love everything about you.” Stede continues. “You’re very special to me, my dearest Edward.”
His eyes had been fixed on the horizon as he spoke, but now he turns his head to look at Ed, finding tears running down his boyfriend’s cheeks.
“Why are you always so good with words.” Ed sniffs.
“Just for you my darling.”
“I love you too.” Ed says, still a little choked up.
Stede wipes away some of Ed’s tears. “I know, I know you do darling.”
