    A flurry of fur crashes into him, pinning him to the ground. The scent is everywhere now—intense and consuming. The weight of the other cat’s body on his chest is familiar, and for a split second, Moonpaw freezes, heart hammering. Even though the other cat has its claws unsheathed, there is no threat in the pressure, only a strange sense of security.

    His eyes lock with the other cat’s—deep and stormy gray—and something inside him twists, as though the world is holding its breath. Neither cat moves, two strangers caught in an unspoken moment. His claws itch, but he can’t tear his gaze away from the other cat’s eyes.
