Defying gravity

Summary:

Lute and Emily after the trial.

Notes:

Day 7: Revenge.

Work Text:

Emily hurried through the corridors of heaven. She really hoped Lute was okay. Defying something that the council and the Speaker herself approved could be something that would lead to one ending up fallen. She left Sir Pentious in his room to rest after his eventful day, and was searching for her friend ever since. Finally, she spotted her, standing on one of the small and empty hallways. As she neared her, Emily could hear Lute muttering to herself. She felt her chest clenching. She had heard from others how the older girl often talked to no one, but did it as if someone was still there. She had no idea Adam’s death affected her that much.

”Lute-” She started as she reached the other, making Lute stiff. Lute slowly turned around, having the coldest look in her eyes Emily had ever seen.

”What do you want? Shouldn’t you be with your precious sinner? The one you betray your owns for? Oh, sorry, you have already done it when the Morningstar was here!”

Lute’s every word sting, and Emily had to hold back her tears. The only thing that made it easier was the fact that she knew the real Lute. The one, who – if she had time – accompanied her to the zoo, so they can hang out. The one, who let small smiles slip from time to time – true, heartfelt smiles. The one, who was her friend. Concentrating to those memories, not the bitter and angry woman in front of her, Emily took a deep breath and started speaking.

”Lute, I know how-”

”YOU KNOW SHIT!” Lute cried, pausing Emily. ”WHEN SERA WILL DIE IN FRONT OF YOU, AND YOU COULDN’T DO ANYTHING, BUT WATCH AS IT HAPPENS, THEN YOU WILL KNOW HOW I FEEL!” Emily gasped in shock, and stayed silence. Lute might feel that she went too far, because she averted her eyes, feeling shame bubbling in her chest. She didn’t like hurting the younger, but she was right there, having so different ideologies the words just came out of Lute’s mouth without any filter.

”Yes, I think you are right,” Emily whispered eventually, shocking Lute with her statement.

”At least, you are not a liar,” she constated, turning around to leave, when Emily spoke up again.

”But revenge still isn’t the right thing to do! It will only bring pain to everyone again.”

”Don’t try to stop me. It will be in vain,” Lute informed her, then walked away – just to be stopped by Emily, hugging her from behind.

”Please, Lute! I don’t want to see you get hurt…” Her voice was so small it made Lute’s chest squeeze.

She had to admit Emily was right. As of right then Abel was the head of the exorcist army, so it was her against the world – or hell, to be more specific. Lute turned around, pushed Emily back a bit, then lent down and kissed her on the forehead.

”You really shouldn’t spent time with hellborns. You are too good for them.”
