Work Text:
Changbin is fading in and out of consciousness. He hears something, vaguely, but their blankets are warm and cozy, his pillow is soft, it’s easy to slip back into sleep. He hears it again — something clicks in his tired mind. Reality becomes sharper, closer.
Then, clearly: a sob.
He abruptly sits up, suddenly wide awake. “Hyunie?” He turns to face him. “Baby, what happened? What’s wrong?”
“Look how cute this is,” Hyunjin sobs, his words wet and garbled. He’s sitting up against the headboard, his puffy face is lit up by the light from his phone. Changbin lets out a massive exhale. Hyunjin has always been sensitive — but he has been extra sensitive since the beginning of this pregnancy.
Hyunjin turns his phone towards Changbin. It’s literally just an Instagram reel of a chihuahua that looks vaguely like Kkami. It’s cute, or whatever, but it’s not cry and sob in the middle of the night cute.
“That’s really cute,” Changbin agrees anyway. Hyunjin lets it loop again and sobs out loud.
“Are you having trouble sleeping?” Changbin rubs his hand up Hyunjin’s thigh soothingly. They haven't gotten a full night of sleep since Hyunjin got into the third trimester.
Hyunjin nods. More tears stream down his face and down his neck to the dampened collar of his shirt. He scrolls; there’s another chihuahua. He closes his eyes. He’s crying so hard it’s gone silent.
“That’s — it’s very cute,” Changbin says. “Do you maybe wanna try sleeping?”
Hyunjin nods. He inhales a series of staccato breaths, locks his phone, and lays down. Changbin immediately snuggles up next to him.
“Our baby is going to be so cute,” Hyunjin sobs. “She’s going to be — she’s gonna be so small.”
Changbin’s heart clenches. He’s so excited to meet their daughter; she is going to be so cute.
“She’s gonna be beautiful.” Changbin kisses Hyunjin’s shoulder. “Her dad’s the most beautiful person in the world.”
“I can’t wait to see her little hands.” Hyunjin hiccups. “They’re gonna be so small.”
Changbin hums. He noses at Hyunjin’s scent glands in an attempt to help him calm down. “We’ll get to meet her soon.”
“I’m so excited,” Hyunjin mumbles. His breathing is already starting to slow down again; he’s relaxing in Changbin’s arms.
“I know, baby.” Changbin plants a kiss in his hair. “Me too.”
Changbin punches in their keycode and starts to open the door. Hyunjin appears in the sliver of space. “Changbin.”
Changbin jumps a little. He wasn’t expecting him to be right there.
Hyunjin ignores it. He swings the door open; Changbin shuffles in. Hyunjin clings to his arm as soon as he’s in grabbing distance. “I need tanghulu.”
“Okay.” Changbin doesn’t kick his shoes off quite yet. “You wanna go for a walk or order it?”
“Order it,” Hyunjin answers, as he slips his hands underneath Changbin’s shirt and holds onto him. “I’m going to take down at least ten and I don’t want to be seen while I’m doing it.”
Changbin hums and pulls out his phone. He takes Hyunjin’s order for about ten seconds before Hyunjin snatches his phone away to do it himself, still keeping an arm firmly wrapped around Changbin. Changbin moves against his grip slightly when he takes off his shoes; Hyunjin makes a whiny sound in the back of his throat.
“Cuddle me while we wait,” Hyunjin demands as he hands the phone back. He can’t let go of Changbin the entire walk to the couch.
They settle in together, Hyunjin sprawled out between Changbin’s legs with his head on his chest. Hyunjin is holding onto the arm thrown over his shoulder like Changbin will float away if he loosens his grip.
“I’m not going anywhere, baby,” Changbin laughs softly.
“I missed you,” Hyunjin mumbles in response.
Changbin smiles. He does as much work as he can from home but he actually needed to go into the studio today. He was only gone for a couple hours, but Hyunjin goes through bouts of especially severe clinginess these days. “I missed you too.”
Hyunjin tilts his head. Changbin hunches over to scent him, and Hyunjin’s grip finally relaxes a little. He presses a kiss to the scar on his neck. He scents and kisses and murmurs sweet words to Hyunjin until he’s pliant and calm.
Changbin’s phone buzzes. Hyunjin abruptly sits up, like a fire alarm had gone off instead of a delivery notification.
“Is it here?” He asks with such a sense of urgency that Changbin has to laugh.
It is indeed here. Changbin goes to grab it; the bag is extraordinarily heavy.
“How many did you get?” He asks as he reenters the room.
“A lot,” Hyunjin answers.
Changbin enjoys one. Then, he watches Hyunjin absolutely house, like, fifteen. He crunches on a strawberry then switches to a grape, one stick in both hands to alternate. He eats a whole tangerine in one bite. Changbin has never seen him do that before, he didn’t think he would be capable of that. He’s pretty sure he unhinged his jaw somehow.
Changbin is so, so in love.
Changbin hears the door of his home office open. He’s in the middle of recording something but he pauses and turns around.
“Hey baby,” Hyunjin says.
Changbin grins. “What do you need?”
“We should go to dinner tonight.”
“Yeah?” Changbin reaches out for him. Hyunjin approaches; Changbin holds his hips with both hands and stares up at him. “Want me to take you on a date?”
Hyunjin nods. “I want meat.”
“Whatever you want,” Changbin coos.
“Right now.”
Changbin turns around to check the time on his monitor. It’s three in the afternoon and he definitely has more work to do.
“Okay,” Changbin agrees. “Yeah. Let me finish this one thing while you get ready.”
Hyunjin is adjusting his outfit in the mirror. Changbin comes up behind him and rests his chin on his shoulder, slipping his arms around his waist and resting his hands on his stomach.
“You look gorgeous, baby,” Changbin mumbles.
Hyunjin sighs and tilts his head. Changbin starts planting kisses down the side of his neck.
“You’re so perfect,” Changbin says against his skin. “You’re so, so beautiful.”
Hyunjin giggles. “I look the same as I always do,”
Changbin hums. He noses at his scent glands. “Gorgeous and perfect and beautiful.”
Hyunjin doesn’t respond, he just leans back into Changbin. Changbin needs to look up at him in the mirror again, he can’t tear his eyes away for too long.
“You’re glowing.”
Hyunjin rolls his eyes.
“Really,” Changbin insists. “I’m being serious.”
“What does that even mean?” Hyunjin asks. “Everyone keeps saying that.”
“You just…” Changbin sighs. He turns Hyunjin around so he can look at him face to face. He feels his knees buckle a little; he cannot believe this is his omega. “I don’t know. You just are.”
Hyunjin’s lips turn up at the corners.
Hyunjin has this cute little mmm sound he makes when he tries something and enjoys it. His adorable face scrunches up all sad as he forces a bite of food into his mouth, and then he does this very specific little mmm. Changbin can tell how much he likes it based on the length and pitch of the mmm. Or sometimes, if he really loves it, he’ll just lean back in his chair, speechless.
Changbin loves watching him eat. Throughout the duration of this pregnancy, Changbin is pretty sure Hyunjin looks the happiest while he’s eating.
“Is it good?” Changbin asks as he serves Hyunjin more meat, even though he already knows the answer. Hyunjin nods vigorously, his cheeks puffed out from all the food stuffed in them. Changbin can’t help the happy giggles that spill out of him, he’s so happy. He’s so excited. He has the most perfect, adorable omega in the world and they’re about to have the most perfect, adorable daughter in the world and Changbin could not be luckier. He has gratitude overflowing out of his pores.
“Thank you,” Changbin says.
Hyunjin finishes chewing and swallowing. “Why are you thanking me?” He asks as he goes to take a sip of his drink.
“I dunno.” Changbin shrugs. “For doing this for us.”
“I baby trapped you,” Hyunjin responds.
Changbin bursts into laughter.
“You didn’t baby trap me. We planned for this extensively.”
“I baby trapped you,” Hyunjin repeats. “You’re gonna stay with me forever.”
Changbin smiles. “I was gonna stay with you forever anyway.” He nudges Hyunjin’s foot underneath the table. “I can’t wait to be with you forever.”
Hyunjin’s bottom lip sticks out — he holds out his hand. Changbin takes it and swipes his thumb across his skin, staring into his beautiful eyes. He’s so, so in love. He’s realized over these last couple years that he’d never been in love until he met Hyunjin. And now they’re going to have a beautiful daughter, and his love is going to double. Well, it already has. Maybe it’s going to triple or quintuple.
“I love you,” Changbin says.
“I love you too.” Hyunjin squeezes his hand. They stare at each other for another moment. “...And this is really cute, but I kinda, like. Need this hand to eat. And also I’d like you to grill me more meat.”
Changbin promptly gets back to work.
Later, when Changbin is right on the precipice of sleep, he hears a little:
“Thank you.”
“Hm?” Changbin asks. He’s tired and full and so cozy next to Hyunjin, he’s not processing words.
“Thank you,” Hyunjin repeats. “For taking such good care of me.”
Changbin cracks his eyes open. He looks down at Hyunjin snuggled under his arm. “That’s my job, baby.”
“You take—” Hyunjin’s breath catches. Changbin already knows what’s going to happen before it starts. “You take such—”
Changbin reaches with the hand that isn’t trapped under Hyunjin to catch the tears right as they start pouring. Hyunjin’s sentence is cut off by his own sob.
“I love taking care of you,” Changbin replies.
“You’re such a good man,” Hyunjin cries. “I’m so lucky.”
“We’re so lucky,” Changbin corrects.
“But you take such good care of me,” Hyunjin slurs, his words garbled and curving around each other. He turns to bury his face in Changbin’s armpit. “I love you so much.”
“I love you too.” Changbin tries to nudge his face back out. “You’re everything to me, sweetheart.”
Hyunjin sobs, then wordlessly rolls over on his side so Changbin can more adequately hold him.
“Changbin?” Hyunjin says, his tone going slightly up at the end.
Changbin looks away from the TV. “What do you need, sweetheart?”
“My shoulders hurt.”
Changbin promptly stands up and walks around to the back of the couch to rub his shoulders. Hyunjin sighs happily, his head tilting back.
“I love you,” he exhales.
“I love you.” Changbin leans over to kiss his forehead. He digs his fingers into Hyunjin’s shoulders, he’s done this enough times at this point to know exactly how he wants it.
“Oh, wait.” Hyunjin lifts up his head again. Changbin pauses. “She’s kicking.”
Changbin hops over the back of the couch and lands with a bounce next to Hyunjin. Hyunjin bursts into giggles, takes his hand and sets it next to his bellybutton. Changbin’s smile takes over his whole face when he feels.
“Still right here?” Changbin coos. “She must be so comfy!”
Hyunjin nods. “She hasn’t been moving around a ton.”
“She’s comfy,” Changbin repeats. He looks up at Hyunjin. “You’re such a comfy home.”
“Ugh,” Hyunjin groans, but he’s smiling. “Gross.”
“It’s not gross!” Changbin defends himself. “It’s beautiful! You’re her home!”
“Stop calling me a home,” Hyunjin demands.
She kicks again. Changbin can’t help the happy giggles that spill out of him, this never gets less fun. He can’t believe that their baby, Changbin and Hyunjin’s baby that they created together, is right there.
“I can’t believe we made her,” Changbin whispers. Hyunjin hums.
“You liked this one, right?” Changbin turns his laptop towards Hyunjin to show him the birthing center website. “The rooms look nice.”
“I don’t know,” Hyunjin mumbles without even opening his eyes. He’s reclined back on the couch, his legs stretched out in front of him. Changbin is crammed up against the arm.
“You didn’t look at it.”
He cracks his eyes open. “Yeah,” he halfheartedly answers. “That looks nice.”
“Or there’s this one.” Changbin moves to the other window. “It has—”
“Changbin,” Hyunjin interrupts. “I need you to leave me alone.”
Changbin bursts into giggles. “Alright, baby. Sounds good.”
He turns his laptop back towards himself and keeps searching. They decided on definitely going to a birthing center, they just have to choose which one. Changbin might be an expert on every high-end birthing center in Seoul at this point. He’s looked at these websites more times than he can count.
“Sorry, one more thing,” Changbin says, making sure that his voice is quiet enough so as to not entirely disturb his relaxation. “Do you think—”
“Leave,” Hyunjin cuts him off.
“...Like, the room?”
Hyunjin nods.
Changbin smiles. “Okay.” He gives Hyunjin a quick kiss on his forehead before retreating to his office.
That lasts about ten minutes.
“Changbin.” Hyunjin comes waddling into the room.
Changbin turns around in his desk chair. “Yeah?”
Hyunjin stares at him.
“Do you need something?” Changbin asks.
Hyunjin stares at him some more. They sit there, staring at each other.
“You’re not giving me enough attention,” Hyunjin finally says.
Changbin grins. “You told me to leave you alone.”
Hyunjin glares at him.
“Sorry, baby.” Changbin stands up; Hyunjin immediately clings to his side.
“I wanna nap,” he mumbles. Since he can’t sleep through the night, they have been taking an inordinate amount of naps. He likes to hold and squish Changbin while he falls asleep.
Changbin hums and leads him to the bedroom. Hyunjin is leaning almost all of his bodyweight on him, so he feels the need to lower him to the bed gently. Hyunjin makes grabby hands at him.
“I’m coming,” Changbin laughs softly. He grabs the blanket discarded at the edge of the bed and drapes it over Hyunjin.
“Come faster.”
Changbin makes his way to the other side of the bed and crawls under the blanket with him. Hyunjin is immediately all over him, groping his stomach and his chest and his arms. It’s relaxing to him, Changbin supposes. He doesn’t really get it, but he’ll do whatever Hyunjin needs.
Changbin likes to check in with the baby.
“Hey baby!” Changbin coos right up against Hyunjin’s stomach. “We built your crib today.”
Well, Changbin built the crib, obviously. And by Changbin built the crib, he means he called Chan to come and help him build the crib. Well, Changbin helped Chan. A little. Chan built the crib.
“I hope you like your room,” Changbin continues. “Your dad made it really nice.”
Hyunjin laughs a little. He’s sleepy, reclined back on the bed while Changbin chats at his bump. “You helped.”
Changbin shakes his head. “Sure.”
Changbin provided input here and there, which Hyunjin would sometimes implement. Hyunjin did it all.
“I think you’ll like it, yeah? I—” Changbin feels a sudden movement under Hyunjin’s skin. He gasps. “She kicked!” He yells, arguably too loud. “Oh my god, she can hear me.” Changbin puts both hands on Hyunjin’s belly, sits up on his knees and stares at it, in awe. “She knows me.”
Hyunjin bursts into giggles. Changbin’s heart bursts.
“Baby.” Changbin starts planting kisses all over Hyunjin’s stomach. “Baby, I love you so much.”
Hyunjin’s giggles double.
“We’re so excited to meet you,” Changbin continues. “You’re gonna love it here.” He looks up at Hyunjin. “I love you so much.”
Hyunjin is smiling down at him with soft eyes. Changbin never feels more adored than when Hyunjin looks at him.
Hyunjin brings his hand to Changbin’s face. “I love you too.”
