Work Text:

Day 1:

It had already been a day since Patricia got captured, and Surume was still feeling down in the dumps. If only she could have been fast enough to save her, if only they went to Octo Canyon on time, Surume could have prevented Pat getting captured. Instead, she wasn't; they had been late, she was too slow and weak to save Pat, and in the end, she had gotten Patricia captured. Surume knew this was her fault for getting Pat captured, for being known as "Agent 4 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon." Whatever, they had already been feeling the worst, why should they think about it now? Surely, their pain will ease soon...Surume lays in her bed and tries to fall asleep...

Day 3:

Surume clearly remembers the convo she had with Marie, after they told her that Pat had been captured from a UFO that was different from the Octarians...

Surume had ran to Marie's cabin, tears falling down their face. "Marie, Marie!" She cried, her voice shaking. Marie turned around, concerned for Surume. "What's wrong, Agent 4?" Surume fell to their knees, and started stuttering with sobs, "My friend Patricia got captured...I-I knew I was late today for my missions but a UFO that was different from the O-Octarians tied her up in rope and t-took her away...!!! I-I was too weak to save her...I was t-too s-s-slow...Pat probably never wants to see me again after what happened!!!" Surume wailed, tears flowing down like a waterfall. Marie sighed. "4, I'm gonna be honest, it was bound to happen anyway. I heard that Octolings had been captured left and right, so I messed with your phone alarm yesterday..." Surume stopped crying for a second, and looked at Marie in shock. "You, you did what...?" Marie looked away from Surume. "I knew another attack of these UFOs would come around at your time, so I had to mess with your phone alarm so that you would arrive late and won't get captured." Surume couldn't believe Marie. "YOU THINK THIS IS OKAY??! YOU'RE COMPLETELY FINE WITH PATRICIA BEING CAPTURED?!!!! YOU STRAIGHT UP MESSED UP MY LIFE!!!" Surume yelled, angry tears falling. They turned around, and started to take off their Agent 4 Hero Gear. "4, what are you doing...?" Surume, still not looking at Marie, replied, "I'm quitting. Goodbye, Marie." After leaving her Agent Gear and Weapons near the cabin, Surume left Octo Canyon through the sinkhole, leaving her past job behind forever.

Surume sighed, putting down her empty glass of water. She walked back to their bed, feeling ill. They'll try to sleep again tonight.

Day 7:

Surume had still not walked outside of their apartment. Their body was getting slimmer by the day, for they have not eaten in a week since the incident. Pat had been like a best friend to Surume, she had taught Surume everything there is to know about an Octoling. Patricia had taught them their language, the differences between their species, and their culture as well. Surume in return had taught her their species' language and culture as well. Surume really wanted Patricia back safe and sound, she really did. But they worry that Pat is mad at them for not saving her, let alone going after her somehow. Surume sighed, maybe they were completely worthless...

Surume heard a knock on their door. They looked outside to see that it was their younger sibling and older cousin, Splashly and KelpShot. "Surume, are you alright? We haven't heard from you in a week." Splashly had asked. Surume weakly replied, "I'm doing fine guys, don't worry. Once this weird funk is over, I'm totally coming back to playing Turf with you guys." KelpShot responded, "Ok, cous, but everyone is worried about you. Just...text us if you need anything, ok?" Surume replied with a simple "Okay", waited for them to leave, and went to fall asleep again.

Day 14:

Surume still had that weird "funk" for two weeks, despite trying to ease whatever it was. But why did she still felt responsible for Pat's capture? Why hasn't she felt all that pain go away now? She looked at her arms and legs, they were too slim, which is dangerous...but she couldn't bear enough to eat. Why couldn't she felt the urgency to eat food in order to live? Unless, she felt like she shouldn't live. She shouldn't have existed in the first place, so she probably was torturing herself, knowing that she was still existing in the first place was a huge mistake...Surume just got a text. Her younger brother wanted to drop off ramen that their mom made for her. Surume texted back to xem that Splashly can just drop it at the front of her door. 30 minutes later, they dropped it off, and Surume made sure he was gone before she opened the door and grabbed the food. She heated it up, and then took it out of the pot and poured it into a bowl. She quietly slurped the noodles and broth, and she felt her strength to start back a bit, little by little. She cleaned up, texted her brother a quick "Thank You", and went to sleep, feeling a bit better from today.

Day 21:

It had gotten worse again, even after it had been another week. She had eaten, she had her strength and her typical body back, but her funk had gotten way worse. She had been thinking of different ways to kill herself, drowning, cutting their skin, and even hanging themself as well...today, she just wishes they can fall back asleep and never wake up...she stays laying in bed for the rest of the day.

Day 32:

It has been a full month now, and Surume's friends had all come to visit her. Apparently, a therapist her family has visited without her had officially diagnosed Surume with depression, and that the same one had officially reached a doctor to prescribe her anti-depression medication for Surume to take every day. Surume finally also told her friends why she had been stuck in her apartment everyday, even though she broke the rule of keeping the NSS secret. At the end of the day, it was actually good; Surume ate and drank a healthy amount, she played some board games with her friends, and took her meds before bedtime. Surume finally felt some relief and was very grateful for her friends, that her night had given her the sweetest of dreams.
