Work Text:

The room was thick with the silence of the night, a silence that only made the churning in Jan’s mind feel louder. His body was exhausted, but his thoughts—his endless, spinning thoughts—refused to let him rest. He had tried to lie still, tried to force his mind to calm down, but nothing worked. Each time he tried, the thoughts just piled on top of one another, pushing him deeper into the labyrinth of anxiety and uncertainty. It was a suffocating feeling, a relentless pressure building in his chest, and he couldn’t escape it.

It was as though his brain was working against him, firing off a thousand different worries, each one competing for attention. His heart raced, his skin flushed with heat as his mind circled endlessly. Work, the band, conversations with friends, something he might have said or not said, things he could have done differently. The voices inside his head were growing louder, more insistent. He felt trapped in a whirlwind that only seemed to spiral faster.

He needed to escape it, to find some release. He quietly slid out of bed, trying not to disturb Nace, who was still fast asleep beside him. The last thing Jan wanted was to wake Nace, not when he was finally getting some rest.

Jan padded softly into the kitchen, his feet cold against the floor. The kettle flickered on as he filled it, the sound of the water filling the silence, but it didn’t bring him any relief. He stood there, hands gripping the edge of the counter, his breath shallow, feeling the world closing in around him. His thoughts were too loud, too overwhelming. He couldn’t hear himself think. He felt like he was drowning in his own mind, and no matter how hard he tried to catch his breath, it only got worse.

Without realizing it, Jan sank slowly to the floor. He slid down the cabinets, his back pressing against the cool surface, his legs pulling up to his chest. The cold tile beneath him did nothing to ease the burning pressure in his chest. His head was full of too much. Too many thoughts, too many worries, too many expectations. He couldn’t handle it anymore.

The tears started to come before he even realized it. They were hot, sharp, and they came in waves, as though his body was finally giving in to the weight he had been carrying. His breath hitched, the sobs breaking free, uncontrollable, as his body trembled in the quiet darkness of the kitchen. Jan covered his face with his hands, as if trying to stop the tears from spilling, but they only came faster, each one another release he had been holding back for far too long.

He didn’t want Nace to see him like this. He didn’t want to burden him, didn’t want to appear weak. Nace had always been the steady one, the calm in the storm, and Jan didn’t want to drag him into this. He didn’t want Nace to have to deal with his mess. But in that moment, he couldn’t control it anymore. The exhaustion, the anxiety, the pressure—it all broke apart in the most vulnerable way.

And then, just as suddenly as it had all crashed down on him, he heard it: a soft, careful voice from the doorway.

“Jan? Why are you out here?”

Nace’s voice was gentle but full of concern. It was enough to make Jan freeze, to feel that pang of guilt wash over him once more. He hadn’t meant to wake Nace. He didn’t want Nace to see him like this—crying on the floor, vulnerable, lost in his emotions.

Jan swallowed hard, his throat tight. He didn’t know how to explain it. How could he explain the endless torrent of thoughts that never seemed to stop, the fear that gripped him every time his mind raced? He felt foolish for even thinking that tea would help, for thinking he could handle it by himself.

“I… I couldn’t sleep,” Jan admitted, his voice barely above a whisper, his gaze dropping to the floor. “My mind… it won’t stop. I thought if I got some tea, maybe I could calm down.”

Nace’s gaze softened even more, his expression full of empathy.

Before he could wipe away his tears or say anything, Nace was already there. Without saying a word, Nace kneeled beside him, his presence warm and steady. He didn’t try to force Jan to speak, didn’t ask any other questions. He simply looked at him, his gaze full of quiet understanding. There was no judgment in Nace’s eyes, no rush to fix anything, just a soft, compassionate patience.

“Can I hug you?” Nace asked quietly, his voice barely more than a whisper, though giving Jan the choice to let him in.

Jan nodded, the action slow, hesitant, as though his body was still unsure whether to accept the comfort Nace offered. But when Nace gently pulled him into his arms, Jan immediately melted into the embrace, his body trembling with relief. Nace’s warmth surrounded him, a steadying force, and it felt like the first time in hours he could breathe again.

Nace didn’t say anything right away. He simply held him, his arms strong and secure, his fingers tracing comforting circles on Jan’s back. Jan buried his face in Nace’s chest, his sobs quieting, the release from the tears feeling like a cleansing flood.

As the sobs began to lessen, Nace gently pulled back, just enough to look into Jan’s face, still tender, still full of that unspoken understanding. Jan’s eyes were red, his cheeks streaked with the remnants of tears, and Nace’s heart clenched at the sight. Without thinking, Nace cupped Jan’s face in his hands, leaning in slowly, his lips brushing gently against Jan’s in a soft, lingering kiss.

The warmth of the kiss was both grounding and tender, an unspoken promise that Jan wasn’t alone in this. Nace’s lips lingered for just a moment longer, and when he pulled away, his gaze met Jan’s with an unshakeable tenderness.

“You don’t have to say anything, Jan,” Nace murmured softly, his thumb gently brushing across Jan’s cheek. “You’re not alone. I’m right here.”

Jan closed his eyes for a moment, letting Nace’s words sink in, feeling the steady comfort that Nace always provided. For the first time tonight, he didn’t feel like he had to shoulder everything by himself.

“I’m sorry,” Jan whispered, his voice breaking again, though this time the tears didn’t come. “I didn’t want to wake you, or… or drag you into this. I’m just… I’m just so tired of it. Tired of thinking. Tired of feeling like I’m not enough.”

Nace’s hand gently cupped Jan’s face, lifting it so that their eyes met. “You are more than enough, Jan,” Nace said, his voice firm but filled with warmth. “You’re everything to me, just as you are. You don’t have to apologize for needing comfort. You’re human, and we all need someone sometimes. I’m right here with you. Always.”

Jan closed his eyes, feeling a profound sense of peace as Nace’s words washed over him. He leaned into Nace’s touch, finding strength in the kindness and love that surrounded him.

“Let’s go back to bed, yeah?” Nace whispered, his hands sliding down to Jan’s waist, helping him slowly to his feet. “I’ll stay with you. You don’t have to be alone.”

Jan nodded, feeling a profound sense of peace as Nace helped him up. They made their way back to the bedroom, moving slowly, as if they both understood the importance of taking their time. When they reached the bed, Nace tucked the blankets around them, pulling Jan close against him. This time, Jan allowed himself to be the small spoon, feeling the steady, comforting presence of Nace wrapped around him like a shield.

Jan sighed, a deep, contented breath, and closed his eyes. The world outside was still, but for the first time tonight, his mind had slowed, and he could finally feel the weight of exhaustion pulling him toward sleep.

Nace’s arms around him were a steady reminder that he wasn’t alone, and that was enough to bring him peace.

“You’re safe,” Nace whispered softly, pressing a kiss to Jan’s hair. “I’ve got you, always.”

And in that moment, Jan finally allowed himself to rest, feeling the warmth of Nace’s love surround him like a blanket, and for the first time in a long while, he knew that everything would be okay.
“It’s okay,” Nace murmured. “I’m right here, Jan. I’m not going anywhere.”

Jan closed his eyes, tears slipping down his cheeks without warning, not from sorrow but from the overwhelming relief of being held, of not having to carry everything alone anymore. The anxiety wasn’t gone, but it was muted, softened by Nace’s touch.

“I’m so tired,” Jan whispered, his voice breaking as the exhaustion hit him all at once. “I just need to sleep.”

“Then let’s go back to bed,” Nace said softly, his voice full of compassion. “We can sleep together. I’ll make sure you’re okay.”

Nace gently guided Jan back to the bedroom, his arm wrapped around Jan’s waist, holding him steady as they moved through the dark. He climbed into bed first, pulling the blankets back with a soft rustle, and then Jan slid into bed beside him, curling up against Nace’s chest.

Nace held him close, his arms wrapping around Jan’s body as though he was the safest place in the world. Jan tucked his head under Nace’s chin, his body fitting against Nace’s like they were made to be together. He felt Nace’s warmth seep into him, steady and unwavering, grounding him.

“Sleep now,” Nace whispered, his voice low and soothing. “I’ve got you. Always.”

Jan let out a long, contented sigh, finally allowing his body to relax. He was so tired, so completely exhausted, but it was different now. He was no longer alone in the quiet. Nace was there, holding him, comforting him.

And for the first time in hours, his mind stilled. He let himself sink into Nace’s embrace, his breathing slowing, the exhaustion finally taking over.

As Jan drifted off to sleep, he was wrapped in the warmth of Nace’s arms, feeling safe and loved, knowing that whatever battles his mind might wage in the future, Nace would always be there to help him find peace again.

In the quiet of the night, Jan slept soundly, cradled in Nace’s love.
