“I don't care how long it takes
As long as I'm with you I've got a smile on my face” — Here With Me (d4vd)

Just a silly little cuddle fic with RanPoe, and Karl is there too taking the place of your average house cat.

Notes:

This is my first fic, so I hope you like it. I might’ve lowkey stayed up all night before a test writing this so please enjoy

Work Text:

The smell of coffee and the crisp fire filled the air. A cold, dreary autumn rain filled what would normally be silence as the two lovers snuggled closely on the couch.

“You smell good,” Ranpo muttered softly into Poe’s chest. He sighs in content as he shifts in the other’s lap.

Poe lazily ran his hands through the sleepy detective’s hair. “Well, I sure I hope I do. I just showered not too long ago.”

How silly. Of course he doesn’t know how to take a compliment properly. Ranpo looks up with half-open eyes, a slight pout on his face. “You know that’s not what I meant, Ed,” he faintly objected.

Karl, hearing the mumbles of the two, wakes up from his nap to jump on the couch. He nuzzles up next to Poe’s legs, a small, tired squeak can be heard as he settles down.

“Oh, I didn’t realize. Sorry, love..”

He sighs and presses a light kiss onto the top of Ranpo’s head. Poe makes sure to keep his hand running in a rhythmic motion through his “rival’s” hair. Yes, they still called each other rivals, but it was more Ranpo’s request so he could confuse people.

The detective buries his head back into Poe’s chest, almost as if he was a cat. “Don’t apologize, idiot. I was just teasing,”
he grumbled. He didn’t bother moving his head again, since he was comfortable.

Another comfortable silence fills the room before Poe starts to mentally scold himself. He just remembered that he was supposed to pick up more groceries today. He had gotten distracted by his lovely boyfriend coming to visit suddenly.

Ranpo, as always, notices the sudden distraught radiating off of the author. “Did I do something,” he asks curiously, looking up at Poe again. He opens his eyes slightly, looking at his face.

“No, I just needed to buy more groceries,” Poe starts muttering on, “Karl needs more food, and I’m out of a lot of other items.” He seems slightly panicked. Based on how he was acting, there wasn’t enough food to feed the raccoon tonight. He wouldn’t be this panicked if it was simply only his food that he had forgotten.

Ranpo sits up, lightly pressing a finger to the other’s lips to stop his rambling. Moving Poe’s chocolate brown hair, he presses their foreheads together, his emerald eyes gaze lovingly into the author’s. For anyone else, this would be a rare moment indeed. But when Ranpo was with his lover, he was surprisingly compassionate. Well, on his own way, of course.

“Nope, stop talking. We’ll Doordash some more. So stop freaking out before I smother you with Karl’s tail.”

Poe gently grabs the short man’s hand and pressed a feather-light kiss to the back of it. What would he ever do without his dearest Ranpo by his side? The way it only takes the detective a few words to calm him down always astounds Poe, but he doesn’t mind. He always found comfort in it. “You know Karl hates his tail being grabbed. But, I guess that is an excellent idea,” he muttered, “Now, how does getting some extra sweets sound?” The author offered, carefully reaching to the side to grab his phone.

Ranpo’s face light up at the mention of sweets. He wasn’t trying to be greedy, but he technically hadn’t asked for them. Wait, was it greedy to accept an offer like this? Truthfully, he didn’t really care. His brilliant boyfriend had offered to buy sweets specifically for him. He may not show it obviously, but little things like these just make Ranpo fall deeper in love. A soft smile creeps onto his lips, a mischievous giggle creeping free. “I mean, I’m definitely not going to turn it down.”

Poe nods, opening his phone. He takes a moment to add the basic necessities to the cart- food for Karl, some more toilet paper, and different produce items- before handing the phone over to Ranpo. “Here, go ahead and pick something out. Don’t worry about the expenses. As you know, I’m not really restricted in the money department,” he chuckled softly at his own joke. The author fondly looks at his man-child of a boyfriend, who was scrolling for different treats with a certain spark in his eyes.

After a moment, Ranpo hands the phone back. He had added a good amount of treats to the order, along with Poe’s favorite- these little raccoon shaped ice creams they saw one time at the store, and he’d been amazed by them ever since- because he knew that, as much as the man might like the ice creams, he would never actually go out of his way and purchase any. The detectives grins before nuzzling back into his lover’s arms, closing his eyes once again in content.

Poe places the order, making sure to tip the dasher extra since he was in a good mood- and when he tips extra, it usually means that he’s tipped around 500 dollars. He plants a soft kiss onto the sleepy man’s head, enjoying watching him snuggle into his warmth more and more by the minute.

A small, soft cheep can be heard as Karl shuffles into the lap of Ranpo, trying to share the warmth of the two lovers as well. There’s no protests heard from either of them, and it slowly falls quiet as the rain lets up.

Poe takes note of this before finally discarding his phone to the side without much care. A light feathery kiss is placed on the top of his lover’s messy hair. “Ranpo, darling, don’t fall asleep,” he says lightly, coaxing the detective to stay awake, “I don’t need you bouncing off the walls tonight because you can’t sleep.”

A chuckle is heard from him as he nuzzled his head closer to Poe. “Oh, don’t worry Ed, I’m not falling asleep. I’m just comfy.”

The two sit there, embracing each other’s warmth silently. The older man is running his hand through the other’s hair, and Ranpo is clinging onto his neck and waist. They zone out, comfortable within each other’s arms, only paying mind to the doorbell being rung. The groceries were finally here.

“Okay, time to get up, love. I need to go and grab the groceries before they spoil.”

Ranpo reluctantly moves off of his lap, but not before he grumbles about wishing food didn’t spoil so he could have left the groceries outside until they were done cuddling.

Luckily, the room they were in was close to the entrance, so the trip to and from the door wasn’t too long. Because of the fact that he knew how hungry his boyfriend gets, the main living room had been placed right next to the kitchen. As he entered, he finds Ranpo waiting there eagerly- either for his return or the food, possibly both.

The shorter man grabs some of the bags out of Poe’s hands without a word and sorts through them, leaving the mochi and ice creams out. He stashes the rest away in the proper area and grins.

“Poe, I made sure you got your favorite ice creams..~”

He smiles softly at the cheeky tone of the detective, finishing putting away the groceries from the bags he had in hand. “That was very thoughtful of you,” he states as he motions to head over to the living room.

Ranpo giggles, obviously already having known that he would get a compliment of the sorts. He grabs the snacks and happily walks over to the couch, setting them on the coffee table and opening up the mochi. As he begins to munch away, Poe sits down with the TV remote and turns on one of their favorite shows- Inspector Gadget. Yes, it was a bit childish, but it amused the both of them.

As the two peacefully munch away on their sweets and laugh, having conversation as the TV plays in the background, they loose track of time. It didn’t really matter to them though. The two were content, and all that really mattered anymore was the fluttering feeling in their hearts that proved they learned to love each other more and more as every day passes.
