Summary
The sound of a helicopter flying overhead doesn’t make him look up.
It might be out of place out here, but it’s still just burned into Buck’s brain as background noise. The steady beatbeatbeat of the rotors, faint at first and then heavier as they get closer to overhead, fading away again as it clears.
Except that this one doesn’t clear.
It’s past the peak and fading away again with the tempo changes.
Buck looks up to see it tilted on its side, losing altitude, and leaving a smoke trail behind as it sinks. He can’t see any flames, but that could just be because it’s too far away for him to pick it out yet.
He’s on his feet in an instant, pulling his satellite phone out and calling 911, moving as quickly and safely as he can towards the path it’s taking.
“911 what is your emergency and location?”
