Work Text:

Wrecker was content, with his tummy full of great food. He was simply enjoying himself.

The seas were dead calm, the weather great as per its usual, simply perfection for a day of fishing.

Even if Wrecker would not catch anything, it really did not matter, as this was his day off. Well, in a manner of speaking as most days while living on Pabu were leisure compared to his time as a soldier and then, a mercenary.

But today was the one day which Wrecker had reserved only for himself.

As no matter how much Wrecker loved his family and his new friends, sometimes, being by himself was a treat like nothing else. Nothing Wrecker had ever experienced before and finding out more recently that he really needed it and liked it too. Craved it perhaps.

And so here Wrecker was, being lulled into a deep, sleepless slumber by the soft waves of Pabu.

The sun warming him, the lure cast into the deep water, the snoring soon starting… As Wrecker, was falling asleep in this, most perfect moment.

*

It was some time later when Wrecker was roused from his slumber.

He felt a tad groggy, thirsty even. Reaching for the bottle bedside him. Taking a hefty gulp from it. It was only a short moment after, that he realised he was being watched.

Wrecker reached for his blaster, as by default. Only the weapon wasn’t there anymore. As he was on a peaceful island in the middle of the ocean without an enemy in sight. So no weapon.

Wrecker glanced around, seeing an intent pair of eyes aimed at him.

“What the…???”

“Thought you would never wake up.”

The fish like being told him with a chuckle much to Wrecker’s surprise. The creature casually leaning against the boat side.

“You… can talk?”

“Of course I can. I am a dolphin after all.”

“But…”

“No buts about it. We can talk, easy-peasy. But you humanoid types usually don’t listen too good so why waste the effort.”

“Well…”

“So, what’s with the snoring then?”

“Waddaya mean? I don’t snore!”

“Sure you do. You really ought to get it checked out. Could be something wrong with your sinuses.”

“I um… yeah. Sure…whatever.”

Wrecker really was confused, as he was either asleep still or then awake and … talking to a fish!?!

“I am not a fish.”

“I didn’t say that.” But he had thought of it. “How did ya…???”

“I can read your thoughts.”

“You really are an oddity aren’t ya!”

“Well, not so much. I have made friends with a few of the islanders.”

“You have?”

“Of course I have.”

“So, we two are friends now then too?”

“Well, if you catch me a fish, then maybe, we can be friends too.”

“Sure! Of course I will! Um…catch a fish for ya…!?”

“Spot.”

“Wot?”

“My name, it is Spot.”

“Spot eh. Okay then.”

“Yup, Wrecker, it is.”

“So you read my mind about that too?”

“No, I heard the others call you that.”

“Oh.”

“So, fish?”

Without any doubts the talking dolphin was real and talking to him, Wrecker checked the lure and started fishing. Properly so this time around.

Wanting to catch a good juicy fish for his new friend. Spot the dolphin. What a day this turned out to be after all! Wrecker had a new friend!
