Sisterly Advice

Summary:

'Luz was trying to come up with a foolproof plan for coming out to their mom. While Vee understood and appreciated the need for her to get this right and take her time until she was ready, the anxiety spiraling that Luz was doing was painful to watch.'

Or, Vee talks with Luz, and things might just turn out alright.

Notes:

This has been inspired by my other short 'Sailing on Calmer Waters'. This is sort of a companion piece for that.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Luz was trying to come up with a foolproof plan for coming out to their Mom. While Vee understood and appreciated the need for her to get this right and take her time until she was ready, the anxiety spiraling that Luz was doing was painful to watch. The other witches tried to help, but their society was so different from the Human Realm's that they didn't even know where to start with this dilemma.

For a while, Vee thought she could leave it be, and let Luz do what she needed to do. But there was only so much she could take.

Finally, she ushered everybody out of their shared room and she sat Luz down for a talk.

"Okay, listen, I got it that I am stalling," Luz defended herself. "And I know what you are going to say."

Vee raised an eyebrow in a challenge. "Oh really?"

"Well, this is the part where people usually go 'just get it over with, it's going to be fine, she is your mom after all,'" she used an obnoxious nasally voice to drive home her point.

"It's a good thing then that I am not these 'people,'" Vee crossed her arms.

Luz frowned. "So you are not going to tell me to rip the bandaid off?"

"Oh I definitely want to tell you that," she said. "It was funny at first but watching you has become, frankly, very painful. I wanted to put an end to it before I start getting second-hand embarrassment."

"Wow, thanks."

"Seriously, hadn't you fought an evil genocidal Emperor who was also a goo monster? How much scarier can this be."

"A lot, apparently," Luz mumbled.

Vee sighed. She sat down beside her sister on the bed.

Luz looked, well, lost.

"Why don't you tell me what's stopping you from talking to Mom?" she started. Maybe getting her to put her fears into words would help.

Luz sighed. "I don't know," she said. "I want to think that it's going to be alright. That I can just go down there, tell her how it is, and everything will be fine. And then we can go and laugh about me making such a big thing out of it, you know?"

Vee nodded. She also wanted to tell her that it would probably be like that, but she held her tongue for the time being.

"But I don't know how she would react. Being different, well it's a sore subject between us."

"You still hadn't talked about sending you off to camp?"

"She apologized," Luz admitted hanging her head low and hunching over herself. "But we still hadn't talked, like really-really talked, you know."

Vee nodded.

"And this is different," Luz continued. "I just don't want to mess it up."

"I understand," Vee suddenly spoke up catching her attention. "When I was playing you, I was scared of getting it wrong at first."

Luz glanced over at her, she didn't say anything but Vee could tell that she was listening.

"And sure, you went to a place where technically nobody knew you, and when you got back you were supposed to be all changed and whatnot," Vee said with a shrug and a dismissive hand wave. "So that made it a bit easier. But the fear was always there, you know."

Luz nodded. "But it ended fine didn't it?"

Vee smiled at her. "Yeah, because of you."

Luz looked away rubbing the back of her neck. "Well, I did my best, but I think the credit goes to Mom on that one," she chuckled.

"Sure," Vee matched her laugh. "But talking with you, you helping me even after I tried to take over your life. It helped more than you can imagine. Knowing I have somebody on my side helped me choose myself."

Luz seemed stunned by her confession. Which Vee found funny - as if she wasn't there for the whole thing.

"But enough with the sappiness," Vee shrugged. "What I wanted to say is- I am on your side, okay? And so are your friends. Not to mention Amity."

Luz shrugged. "Well yeah, but-"

"There is no but," Vee interrupted. "We have your back, that's that. You can tell Mom whenever you feel ready."

Vee didn't wait for her reaction, because if she lingered in there for a moment longer she didn't think she could stop herself from bursting into tears. Happy tears mind you, or well, not entirely, maybe relieved tears - there were still a lot of hard and heavy feelings wrapped up in everything she just said. She wasn't ready to start unwrapping all that. But she did feel easier and lighter now that she was on the other side of the conflict. And if her perspective helped Luz then that was fine by her.

Later she found Luz and Gus hunched over the laptop discussing something. Vee couldn't follow what they were saying, but rainbows and flags were involved so she could guess what it was about.

"What did you tell her?" Amity asked with curiosity.

Vee crossed her arms. "Well, basically I thought I was telling her to take her time. But," she gestured at the two teens in an animated conversation over a video editor, "I think this is fine as well."

"Ah, okay," Amity nodded, but she could tell that she didn't understand.

"Don't worry," Vee chuckled. "I'm sure it's going to be fine."

"Can I have a question?" Amity turned to her.

"Sure."

"What are Human Realm fireworks supposed to be like?"

Well, maybe not everything is going to be all fine. That, for a matter of fact, she should put an end to before it gets out of hand.

Notes:

Pretty sure that the Boling Isles has fireworks (both traditional and the much safer illusion version) Amity just wants to check in if it's the same thing or not.🤣

Just a little something I wanted to write after 'Sailing on Calmer Water'. I was supposed to finish this after that but didn't get around to it.
