Work Text:
Hyunjin always felt like he lived in the shadows. At school, he was the golden boy—tall, graceful, and always pulling off an effortless smile. But behind closed doors, his life was anything but golden. His parents demanded perfection and met failure with cruelty. They weren’t just strict; their punishments were harsh, their words cutting deeper than any bruise.
Every day, he walked into Hanseong High School, donning a mask of calm and charm. Nobody saw through it—except Felix.
Felix was sunshine personified. His warm laughter and golden freckles lit up the dimmest of days. Ever since Felix had transferred from Australia, he and Hyunjin had been close. At first, their bond was built on shared classes and mutual teasing, but over time, it became something deeper. Felix had an innate ability to sense when someone was struggling, and Hyunjin's smile always seemed just a little too practiced.
One day after school, Felix spotted Hyunjin sitting alone on the rooftop, staring out over the city. Felix climbed up next to him and nudged his shoulder.
"What's got you so quiet, mate?" Felix asked, his voice soft but playful.
Hyunjin hesitated. "Nothing much. Just thinking."
Felix didn't press, but that silence planted a seed of worry. Over the next few weeks, Felix started to notice things. The way Hyunjin winced when someone bumped into his shoulder. The dark shadows under his eyes. The times he'd pull back when someone tried to hug him. He was starting to get worried.
One night, Felix couldn’t sleep. His gut told him something was wrong, so he texted Hyunjin:
Felix: Hey, u up?
Hyunjin: Yeah. What's up?
Felix: Want to meet at the park? Just for a bit?
Hyunjin didn’t want to go. He was already exhausted from another argument at home, but something about Felix’s texts felt like a lifeline. Reluctantly, He snuck out, meeting Felix under the dim glow of a streetlamp.
They sat on the swings, neither saying much at first. Then Felix spoke. "You don’t have to tell me anything if you’re not ready. But... if something’s going on, you can trust me."
Hyunjin stared at his sneakers, feeling the weight of Felix’s gaze. "It’s... complicated."
Felix reached over and lightly touched Hyunjin's hand. "I’m here for you. Whatever it is, you don’t have to go through it alone."
That simple gesture broke something in Hyunjin. For the first time in years, he told someone the truth.
About the yelling. The punishments. The bruises. The fear.
Felix's fists clenched as he listened, his usual sunny demeanor replaced with fierce determination. "You’re not staying there," he said firmly.
Hyunjin looked up, startled. "It’s not that easy, Felix."
"No," Felix admitted, "it’s not. But you’re not facing this alone anymore."
The next day, Felix rallied his closest friends—Chan, Seungmin, and Jisung. The four of them hatched a plan. Hyunjin was reluctant, scared of what might happen if they were caught, but Felix’s unwavering confidence gave him courage.
The plan was simple but risky. Hyunjin would gather his essentials, and Felix and the others would help him move out while his parents were at work. Chan offered his family's spare guest room, ensuring Hyunjin had a safe place to stay.
The day of the plan, Hyunjin’s hands shook as he packed a bag. He felt a pang of guilt and fear with every item he stuffed into his backpack, but Felix’s words from the night before echoed in his mind: You deserve to be safe. You deserve to be happy.
Felix and the others showed up exactly on time, their usual playful energy replaced with quiet focus. They moved quickly, grabbing Hyunjin’s things and loading them into Chan’s car.
When the door to freedom finally shut behind them, Hyunjin felt a weight lift off his chest. He glanced at Felix, who gave him a reassuring smile.
"You did it," Felix said softly.
That night at Chan’s house, the group stayed up late, eating snacks and watching movies to distract Hyunjin from the overwhelming emotions. But as the others dozed off, Felix stayed awake, sitting next to Hyunjin on the couch.
"Thank you," Hyunjin whispered.
Felix turned to him, his eyes warm and sincere. "You don’t have to thank me. I care about you, Hyunjin. I just want you to be okay."
Hyunjin’s heart raced. He looked at Felix, his face illuminated by the soft glow of the TV. Without thinking, he leaned in, pressing a gentle kiss to Felix’s cheek.
Felix froze, his freckles darkening as he flushed. Then he grinned, wide and bright. "You’re full of surprises, aren’t you?"
Hyunjin chuckled, his first genuine laugh in weeks. "Guess so."
From that night on, Hyunjin’s life changed. He still had battles to face—legal ones, emotional ones—but with Felix and his friends by his side, he felt stronger. Slowly but surely, he began to heal.
Felix never left his side, offering encouragement, endless hugs, and the kind of love that made Hyunjin believe in happiness again.
For the first time, Hyunjin wasn’t just surviving. He was living. And he was loved.
-----------------------------------------------
Two weeks had passed since Hyunjin moved into Chan’s house. Those weeks had been a whirlwind of adjustments, moments of relief, and the ever-present shadow of anxiety. His parents hadn’t reached out, but Hyunjin knew better than to assume they’d let him go so easily.
On an otherwise calm Tuesday evening, the knock came. Hyunjin had just settled into the living room with Felix when Chan opened the door to find two police officers standing on the porch.
"Is Hyunjin Hwang here?" one of them asked, their tone firm but not unkind.
Chan’s stomach dropped. He glanced over his shoulder at Hyunjin, who was already pale and frozen in place.
"Yes," Chan said cautiously. "Why?"
"We’ve received a report from his parents claiming he’s been kidnapped."
Felix’s jaw tightened. "Kidnapped? That’s ridiculous!"
The officers exchanged glances, clearly skeptical of Felix's outburst. "We’ll need to speak with him directly." Chan stepped aside to let them in, motioning for everyone to stay calm. Hyunjin stood up slowly, his hands trembling. Felix was at his side in an instant, gripping his hand for support. "Hyunjin," one officer began, "your parents are concerned about you. They say you’ve been taken against your will, Can you confirm if that’s true?" Hyunjin shook his head, his voice barely above a whisper. "I wasn’t kidnapped. I left."
The other officer frowned. "Why would they think you were in danger?" Felix couldn’t stay quiet any longer. "Because they’re lying!" he snapped. "They’re the ones who hurt him! That’s why he left in the first place!" The officers exchanged uneasy looks. "That’s a serious accusation," one said. "Do you have any proof of abuse?"
Hyunjin’s throat tightened. He felt like he was suffocating under their scrutiny. Chan and Felix both turned to him, their faces full of silent encouragement. "You don’t have to do this alone," Felix whispered, squeezing his hand. Hyunjin took a shaky breath and slowly pulled up the sleeve of his sweater. The room fell silent. Bruises, some faded to yellow and green, others still dark purple, lined his arms. He hesitated, then lifted the hem of his shirt slightly, revealing the healing scars on his ribs and back.
Felix’s grip on his hand tightened as he felt his own anger boiling. Hyunjin’s voice cracked as he began to speak. "This... this is what they did to me," he said, tears welling in his eyes. "Every time I wasn’t... good enough. Every time they got angry. I couldn’t take it anymore."
The officers’ faces softened, their stern demeanor giving way to concern. "Do you have any witnesses or anyone who can corroborate this?" one asked gently. Felix stepped forward, his voice firm. "We’ve all seen the signs. He told us everything. That’s why we helped him leave. We didn’t kidnap him—we saved him!" Chan nodded. "He’s been staying here because he’s scared of going back. Please don’t send him back."
The officers seemed to deliberate for a moment before one spoke again. "Hyunjin, we’re going to need to document this and follow up with child protective services. If what you’re saying is true, we’ll ensure you’re not forced to return to that environment." Hyunjin’s tears finally spilled over. Felix wrapped an arm around his shoulders, pulling him close. "You’re safe," Felix murmured. "We’ve got you."
The officers took their statements and promised to investigate further. As they left, they reassured Hyunjin that he wouldn’t be taken back without a thorough examination of the situation.
When the door finally closed behind them, Hyunjin collapsed onto the couch, burying his face in his hands. Felix knelt in front of him, gently pulling his hands away. "You were so brave," Felix said softly. Hyunjin looked at him, his eyes red and puffy. "I couldn’t have done it without you."
Felix smiled, brushing a stray tear from Hyunjin’s cheek. "You don’t have to do anything alone anymore. I’m with you. Always." Hyunjin leaned forward, resting his forehead against Felix’s. For the first time in years, he felt hope—a fragile but beautiful thing. No matter what came next, he knew he wasn’t fighting alone.
The following weeks were a delicate balancing act. Child Protective Services (CPS) launched an investigation into Hyunjin’s parents, and the officers returned to take formal photographs of his injuries as evidence. Hyunjin spoke to a counselor who gently encouraged him to share his story, though it left him emotionally drained. Felix never left his side, always ready with a soft smile, a comforting hand on his back, or quiet reassurance when the process overwhelmed him.
Hyunjin smiles back at him. “I’m eternally grateful for all of you.” His heart filled with a warm feeling facing his body towards his friends. Smiles fill the room. “We’re all family here mate!” Chan grinned widely and raised his arm in the air, cheers of agreement filled the room. “Hey Hyunjin, let's catch up on some school work, yeah?” Hyunjin nods then follows Seungmin to the kitchen.
Seungmin organized study sessions to help Hyunjin catch up on schoolwork. Jisung filled their group chats with memes, and Chan made it his personal mission to cook Hyunjin’s favorite meals.
“Oh heck yeah! Jajangmyeon, my favorite!” Hyunjin grins at Chan and digs in. Chan nods. “How about after this we all go for a beach day?”
“Yes!!” Jeongin nods, bouncing on his feet and clapping his hands excitedly.
Everyone quickly finishes up their food and they pack some essentials and everyone changes into their swimwear then they make their way to the beach.
The group piled into Chan’s car, with Felix squeezed in next to Hyunjin. Their knees brushed together, and Hyunjin didn’t pull away. Felix noticed and smiled, subtly intertwining their fingers for the rest of the ride.
When they arrived, the salty breeze and sparkling waves seemed to wash away Hyunjin’s lingering tension. He and Felix wandered along the shore, their hands occasionally brushing as they walked.
"Race you to the water!" Jisung shouted, already sprinting. Hyunjin and Felix exchanged a glance before breaking into a run. Hyunjin was surprisingly fast, and Felix laughed as he tried to keep up. They both ended up soaked as Jisung gleefully splashed them, and even Seungmin, the most reserved of the group, couldn’t resist joining in.
Later, as the sun dipped low on the horizon, Felix and Hyunjin sat on a blanket, watching the waves. Hyunjin rested his head on Felix’s shoulder, feeling lighter than he had in years.
"You know," Felix said softly, "this feels... perfect. You, me, the ocean. I could stay like this forever."
Hyunjin smiled, his heart fluttering. "Me too."
A familiar yell was heard in the distance. “Hey you two! Get over here we have ice cream!” Changbin's loud voice carries over the beach with ease.
—-------------------------------------------------
Back at Chan’s house, movie nights became a regular event. One evening, they decided to watch a cheesy rom-com. As the protagonists shared a dramatic kiss on screen, Jisung groaned.
"Ugh, why is it always so unrealistic?"
Felix smirked. "What, you don’t believe in love at first sight?" Hyunjin chuckled, his cheeks turning pink. "It’s not unrealistic. Just... rare." Felix turned to him, his eyes twinkling. "I think it’s beautiful."
Later, after everyone else had fallen asleep in a pile of blankets, Felix and Hyunjin stayed up talking. Their whispered conversation drifted from the movie to deeper topics—their dreams, fears, and favorite childhood memories.
"You make me feel safe," Hyunjin admitted, his voice barely audible. Felix reached over, brushing a strand of hair from Hyunjin’s face. "And you make me feel like I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be." Hyunjin leaned in, his breath hitching as their lips met for the first time. It was soft and hesitant, but it carried all the unspoken emotions they’d been building. When they pulled back, Felix’s smile was brighter than the morning sun.
—-----------------------------------------------
As time passed, Hyunjin’s scars—both physical and emotional—began to fade. CPS ruled in his favor, granting him protection and removing him from his parents’ custody. Though the process was painful, Hyunjin found strength in his chosen family. Felix and Hyunjin became inseparable. Whether it was cooking with Chan, teasing Jisung during video games, or helping Minho choreograph a dance, Felix was always at Hyunjin’s side. Their love wasn’t loud or showy—it was in the little things: the way Felix always saved the last bite of his favorite snack for Hyunjin, or how Hyunjin instinctively reached for Felix’s hand during moments of doubt.
One evening, as they practiced a dance routine Minho had taught them, Felix suddenly stopped and pulled Hyunjin into a hug. "What’s this for?" Hyunjin asked, laughing.
"Just felt like it," Felix said, his voice muffled against Hyunjin’s shoulder. "You’re amazing, you know that?"
Hyunjin smiled, holding him close. "Only because I have you."
—----------------------------------------------
Months later, standing on the rooftop where they’d first had that life-changing conversation, Felix took Hyunjin’s hand and looked out over the place they grew up in.
“What’s got you so quiet, mate?” Felix says in almost a whisper, grins and then looks up at Hyunjin.
Hyunjin grins and looks back down at him and chuckles. “Nothing much. Just thinking.”
Felix looks back out to the town and then says, "It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come, huh?"
Hyunjin nodded, his heart swelling with gratitude. "I don’t know where I’d be without you."
Felix grinned, leaning in to press a kiss to Hyunjin’s forehead. "You don’t have to know. Because wherever you go, I’ll be right here with you."
Hyunjin smiled, his heart finally at peace. For the first time, the future didn’t seem so scary. With Felix and their friends by his side, he knew he could face anything.
