“You don’t understand,” Cherry whispered, his voice breaking.
“No, you don’t understand!” Joe exploded, stepping closer. “Adam is dangerous. Not just in how he skates, but in how he makes you feel. He keeps you tied to something that doesn’t exist anymore, and I… I don’t want to see you get hurt, dammit.”
Cherry stiffened but didn’t respond immediately. There was something in Joe’s tone that struck him—a sincerity that went beyond the usual jokes or sharp remarks.
“Kojiro…” he began, but stopped, uncertain.
“Let him go” Joe continued, more quietly now, his voice almost trembling. “He doesn’t deserve your attention, Cherry. He doesn’t deserve you.”
