Of food and clueless neighbors

Work Text:

Food is important. Matter fact, according to Kim Seokjin (and backed by world-renowned scientists), it’s the most important thing in the world (screw love, no one needs that to survive).
Therefore, he doesn’t quite understand when the guy that just moved next door –quite a cutie, he must admit- knocks on his door to ask to borrow his kitchen utensils because he apparently ‘‘forgot to bring his when he moved’’.

The boy looks smart, Seokjin notes, and it reminds him of all those times his mother had told him not judge a book by its cover; what kind of person would forget such essential equipment!?

While walking to the kitchen he considers giving the boy a lecture on the importance of food (he’s truly passionate about it), but decides not to, afterall, he’s not the guy's mother.

He doesn’t take it to heart when he comes back from the kitchen and the boy shamelessly snickers upon seeing Seokjin’s -brand new- Hello Kitty-themed set of tools (some people like collecting pens; Seokjin likes collecting kitchen utensils).
He does take it to heart though, when said set is returned, a week later, looking nowhere near as neat as it did the week before. In fact, Seokjin is pretty sure half of the set is badly burned and, therefore, non-functional, and that suspicion is quickly confirmed by the boy’s sheepish smile, followed by a muttered apology and a promise of buying Seokjin a new set ‘as soon as he could’’.

That day, Seokjin maintained his calm and politely insisted it was okay; he ‘‘didn’t actually need that set’’.
That night, he childishly contemplated putting a curse on the boy for wrecking some of his most precious belongings.

He figures he might as well start believing in curses when, the day after, he smells burnt macaroni from the apartment next door.
As much as he believed the guy deserved to be punished for his acts, he wouldn’t wish food loss upon the worst of his enemies, and so he drags himself to the boy’s door while mentally mourning the macaroni-to-be and the bright future it could’ve had.

In the one minute span it had taken the boy to open the door, Seokjin had heard 3 loud thuds and had lowkey started to panick, only for his worries to be considerably aggravated when the door opened and the boy’s kitchen came into view.
It was a mess. A disaster. Utter chaos; a.k.a, too much for Seokjin’s mind to deal with, and he may have had a mini mental breakdown before realizing the poor boy didn’t look all that different from his kitchen (suddenly, he wasn’t so sure about the boy looking smart anymore; afterall, they say you are what you eat).

He invites Seokjin in.
As clumsy as Namjoon may be, he is equal parts proud, and it shows when he, after stumbling over at least 5 different pieces of furniture on his way back to the kitchen (on a normal day it would’ve been 3; Seokjin being there might’ve had something to do with the extra clumsiness), still manages to decline his neighbor’s offer to help.

But Seokjin takes his love for all things food-related seriously -and he’s certain that boy’s kitchen is the stuff nightmares are made of- so he makes it clear he won’t leave the boy to his own devices, as he apparently ‘’dreads the idea of dealing with a guilty conscience’’.

Namjoon finds he isn’t exactly against the idea of having Seokjin spend the day at his place, and for someone who had earlier declined the help, he ends up complying a little too fast; so fast he even forgets to pretend to be bothered Seokjin was getting his way.

By the end of the day the kitchen still didn’t look nowhere near as organized as Seokjin (Namjoon couldn’t care less) had planned; they weren’t exactly the best at staying focused, which had led to half of the day being spent fooling around, running up and down all the stores they happened to pass by (even the ones that didn’t sell any kitchen equipment at all) and occasionally -or rather, pretty often- stopping to eat.
But Seokjin decides it’s good for a start, and calls it a day.

When he goes to sleep that night, he concludes he doesn’t actually loathe the idea of looking at Namjoon’s kitchen anymore, and he doesn’t really disapprove when his brain –or is it his heart?- tries to convince him that might have something to do with the boy himself.

Notes:

This didn't quite go the way I wanted it to, but hopefully you guys could still find it somewhat enjoyable
Thanks a lot for reading!
