Work Text:

It has been two weeks since the sun hatched. It has been almost that long since he had last seen the sky. When everything went south he didn't really have anything so he figured he would try to keep living normally. And that meant trains. He figured that at least the subway station would be safer from whatever would happen, bombs had already been dropped and if they survived that they've got to be safer than the surface.

He was wrong. Kind of. He's the only person who lives in the city and the only one who survived what happened the melted skin and shambling movements of the other denizens doesn't sit right but that doesn't mean he's alone here. Despite the wrongness that being on the surface brings, he'd have still gone out. If only to get some variety. But It doesn't want him to. It wants him to keep at the trains, and he doesn't think he'll like what happens if he says no...

So he doesn't. He runs the trains, repairs the trains, repairs everything else and scavenges food from the empty food stands when It isn't paying attention. It probably isn't enough, but he's surviving. He wouldn't dare go out even when It seems to not look. It has so many eyes. He wouldn't be surprised if It's always watching, ready to pounce on his disobedience. It's during one of these scavenges that he notices the newspaper stand. Still equipped with it's wares. He grabs one - his memory has been really bad since the end of the world, he doesn't remember anything but being a motorman. As he picks it up he notices the photo on the front cover. Is that.... him? It calls him back to the train, break time's over again. He rips off the front pages and stuffs it in his pocket. He'll look at that later.

It's been hours since he last had a break and the piece of paper had completely left his mind. He sat down heavily in the driver's compartment, head spinning slightly from overexertion. Then he remembers the paper in his pocket. 'Well... I have nothing better to do,' he supposes. He pulls it out and starts reading. Most of it is regular stuff, though this paper definitely came before the news as there wasn't any mention of the sun or the Monarchs or the bombs. (I mean, the headline is "Runaway Train? No Thank You!" he probably could've figured that out earlier) He supposes there's no need for any "who likes who" or any other local news when the world's ending. Reading the news from not long ago but makes him feel nostalgic, even if he can't remember it. He wonders if he liked the newspaper. Before. But there's nothing else train-related on the page, he supposes the title's about him then.

He's a bit sad it's about his job. He's also a bit sad his name got smudged beyond recognition. He definitely remembers it! He'd... just like a reminder. That's all. He remembers his job at the subway. It's about the only thing he remembers. And... maybe he doesn't remember his father but that's normal probably. And...

he...

he can't breathe. The paper falls out of his hand. He had a sister. He needs to breathe. He had a sister. He had a sister. He can't remember his sister. He's terrified. What is he scared of? He needs to calm down. He had a sister. He curling into a ball. He can't breathe. He's crying. Why is he crying? He needs to calm down. His throat is dry. He had a sister. His hands are shaking. He squeezes them into fists. He needs to breathe. He needs- He might have a dead sister. His dizziness is back. His vision is blurry. Is he still crying? He's too warm. His eyes fall closed and his body falls to the floor.

Its been one month since the end of the end of the world. There is the front page of a newspaper on the floor of a train's driver's compartment, there is a tool box and a book placed off to the side. The motorman is sitting around a fire with strangers he's known for less than a day. Lucy is talking excitedly with Blu while CG jumps around and chimes in. He nearly ran over them a couple hours ago. Lucy decided to take him with them, take him away from It. The motorman Mole thinks about sisters.
