In a Fantasy

Summary:

Poe hold's Ranpo hostage while she plays a new dating sim. It's a good thing she's pretty.

Notes:

My day 1 contribution to #Ranpoeweek2024! This is my first time participating so excuse me if this one is a little tame and short. Watch out for tomorrow though!

Work Text:

“When can we go to the bakery Poe?”

“Shhh…my dear we can go as soon as I finish this next cut scene”.

Ranpo whined and rolled onto her side as she watched her girlfriend play with a few buttons on her controller. As much as the writer liked to claim she only partook in the fine arts and advanced literature, she was sure a fan of those cheesy dating sims.

Ranpo chuckled at the thought.

“What would the guild say if they knew you played these dating sims when you’re supposed to be making plans for a new office?” Poe shrieked and threw a pillow.

“Say that again and you can buy your own cookies”. That shut her up. Seeing that Poe was engrossed in her games, the other resorted to borderline annoying her until she was done playing.

For the first five minutes. Ranpo curled on Poe's bed, enjoying the soft white sheets that smelled of vanilla and books. It was her favorite scent and she couldn’t help but doze off for a few minutes. She woke up half an hour later, still seeing Poe on her computer.

So then she took Karl, tossing him lightly as she pretended to enjoy a ballroom dance, much to the raccoon’s dismay.

“Poe look! He’s dancing!”

“Yeah…uh uh…”

Ranpo puffed her cheeks out, pulling on her pigtails as she tried to think of other ways to get Poe’s attention.

She laid back, splaying out onto the bed again, not enough to block Poe’s view from her desk, but enough to give a glimpse of herself, with her hair messy, and skirt riding up her legs…

“Hey babe?”, Ranpo said, pulling at the blankets around her. “Care for a break?”

From her view on the bed, she could see Poe glance back, eyes dilating just enough to show her interest, before turning back to the screen.

Are you kidding me?

“Hey! What does a girl have to do to get some attention around here!?” Poe laughed, stopping for a second to pull her hair back as she continued focusing on the screen.

“Ranpo my dear, you really are shameless. If you’d like some attention, why don’t you come to sit with me. Maybe you’ll find the game to be as intriguing as I do.”

Ranpo didn’t respond, until Poe held out her hands and curled her fingers into a beckoning pose.

“I’ll play with your hair if you do”.

“Deal!” That’s all it took for Ranpo to jump out of bed, grabbing her own chair to sit beside Poe, before undoing her braids. She rested her hand on Poe’s armrest, and reserved herself to watching them play the frivolous game. For an hour, she watched as men in the oddest outfits she has ever seen posed dramatically on the screen, proclaiming their love for her girlfriend. She couldn’t complain though, because every few seconds, Poe would gently card her hand through her locks. Occasionally her nails would get caught in a curl or tangle bit of hair. But she’d use her thumb to rub over apologetically. They enjoyed this serenity for a bit, until Poe let out a shrill squeal.

Ranpo fell out of her seat.

“Woah! What the hell happened?!”

“I got a secret cutscene!”

“A what?”

Poe grabbed Ranpo’s face and pressed her left cheek against her right one.

“Listen!”

They both looked at the screen as Poe read outloud. The man on the screen was wearing a detective outfit, complete with a cape, glasses and a magnifying glass.

“He looks stupid”, Ranpo declares. Poe scoffs and tugs on Ranpo’s bangs.

“I believe you have a similar outfit. Do you not?”

“Yeah, but I don’t look stupid”. Poe hushes her again and focuses on the screen. Feeling stubborn, Ranpo only half pays attention. From what she could tell however, was that it was a romance scene.

“Oh my forgotten rose, forgive me for being frank. But I must admit that your beauty is unlike anything I have ever seen before. The greatest mysteries that have fallen upon my desk have done little to prepare for the complexities of our love. Surely, this must mean that we live in a fantasy, a fantasy that brought us together”.

Poe spoke with so much passion, Ranpo couldn’t help but stare in awe. It was just like the time they first met. How could Ranpo not stare in awe when met with her. Poe’s voice slowly faded into the background as she continued staring.

She always started with her hair. A soft brown color, curly enough to look cute whether it was let down, or pulled into a firm ponytail at the back of her head. The soft locks framed her cool skin. The foundation and blush covered just the fair half of her acne scars, but Ranpo loved to run her hands across her cheeks as she looked into her eyes. Those grey eyes captivated the detective every time her lover spoke. And now, Ranpo found herself looking for them as she rubbed her cheek, and spoke absentmindedly.

““If he lives in a world of fantasy, I live in a dream”

“What?”

“What?” Ranpo’s face went flush as she realized what she said. “U-um… Forget what I said! Just finish that cutsc-”

“You live in a fantasy?”

“Shut up!”

Poe smiled and reached out with her own hands, cupping the smaller’s cheeks as she leaned forward and peppered her nose with small kisses.

“You live in a fantasy with me?”

“... shut up and kiss me properly!” Poe raises a brow at her tone, but eventually concedes and kisses her again along her brow, down her cheeks, and finally, a kiss on her lips. Ranpo melted into her arms as she was pulled into her lap. When Poe tugged on her hair again she gave a slight gasp, until Poe pulled apart again.

“Alright, I think it’s time we head to the bakery? What do you say love?”

“I say it’s about time”.  They started heading out together. While in the car though, Poe leans forward and takes Ranpo’s hand.

“Ranpo, why don’t we study that speech from the game, for literary purposes?” Ranpo nodded without thinking.

“And maybe you could wear your detective outfit”.

“Shut up!”
