“Y’know Doc, I met a man once,” Sawyer started, he didn’t want Jack to leave, he was stalling, but in a… good way.
“A man,” Jack said, he smirked, “Go on.”
“He was at a bar in Australia. And he was running away from it all,” Sawyer continued, he had realised a couple days ago that the man was Jack’s father. But when he said ‘That’s why the Sox will never win the Series’ it was solidified that they were related.
“A bar, why am I not surprised,”
“He said that he could go to a pay phone in the bar, call his son, it was ’couple feet behind us, and I told him my story, and guess what he said?” Sawyer watched Jack realise what he was saying, he watched the tears ball up in the doctor’s eyes, “he said what you just said, ‘that’s why the Sox will never win the Series.’”
“Sawyer—“
“An’ he said that his son was a great doctor, better than he could ever be, and he fucked up so now he couldn’t be a doctor anymore,” Sawyer watched Jack wince when the blonde said ‘couldn’t be a doctor anymore’ “he said that no matter what, even before he had made that mistake, that his son would always be a better doctor, let alone person than he was.”
“Oh,” Jack whispered, Sawyer continued.
“I think that’s true, do you Doc? I mean if the man got drunk on the job then, of course the miracle doctor Jack Shepherd is gonna be better at being a doctor than him, huh?”
“Sawyer…” Jack started, then trailed off, Sawyer turned around and started to walk off, then felt hands on his shoulder turn him around. He was pulled into a kiss. And oh how he wanted it to last, but it couldn’t. Kate was calling for Jack.
“You… have to go,” Sawyer whispered, they locked eyes and silently decided to forget about what happened here. It could not be talked about.
No one could know.
