The Hero of Hyrule: A Legend of Zelda Holiday Story

Summary:

On Peace Day Eve, Princess Zelda and her siblings host a grand party to help celebrate the new era of peace Hyrule has found themselves in.

Her younger sister befriends a nutcracker who comes to life and brings her on an unforgettable holiday adventure.

Based off of/inspired by Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker.

Notes:

Author's Note for The Hero of Hyrule:

The Nutcracker has always been one of my favorite Christmas stories when I was growing up. At the age of five, I saw my first performance of it and remember being so captivated by the beautiful costumes, the music and the whole production overall and naming each of the dances which impressed my parents.

I had a LeapPad and a booklet with all the different classical musicians and Tchaikovsky was one that was featured in it. You'd tap each character and a different segment of The Nutcracker suite would play.

That's how I first learned about all of the different dances and fell in love with the story and it's been a part of my life ever since.

I've been on a Legend of Zelda kick again after so many years, mostly due to the fact a friend of mine who is in the midst of planning out a syllabus for a Video Games in Literature Course at a college he teaches at enlisted in my help with which games he wanted to use for it to tie into Joseph Campbell's The Hero's Journey. I suggested any of The Legend of Zelda games, specifically Twilight Princess, but really any one of them could work.

That exchange also inspired me to start working on a sequel to the very first fanfiction I wrote six years ago and am still currently working on which also happens to be a Zelda fanfiction about Link finding his way to the real world and trying to find his way back to Hyrule, appropriately named The New World.

The idea for a Zelda Holiday Story came to me one night as I was driving home from play rehearsal for Miracle on 34th Street. One of Lindsey Stirling's Christmas CDs played as I drove down the highway into the night, alone with my thoughts and thinking "How cool would it be if there was a Zelda story set during Christmas? I wonder what that would look like?" And thus the idea was born.

This was a story that was a lot of fun to write. It's a love letter to both one of my favorite Christmas stories and my favorite video game franchise combined into one.

I do hope this story brings you some Christmas cheer and joy, my dear readers. I hope this story encourages you to believe in magical things and I do hope you enjoy this magical journey in a new light as much as I did writing it.

I also must give a huge thank you to some lovely people that helped me work some ideas into this story: my fellow writer friend and actor Dan Holmes for giving me some ideas to help make the story better and for helping me decide what should be incorporated into the story when I felt stuck and to my Stirlingite friend up north, canadianstirlingite for giving me more ideas to work with and being enthusiastic to read this story. It means so much to me knowing how excited you both were to read this!

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays and I hope that good things come to you all in the new year!

Happy reading!

With love,
-Rachel

Chapter Text

Chapter 1

The snow began falling outside the large glass windows of Hyrule Castle, covering the kingdom in a blanket of white. A large fire roared in the fireplace downstairs casting a warm and cozy glow off the castle walls, only adding to the holiday spirit that was brimming all throughout Hyrule.  The servants quickly rushed back and forth from the halls, carrying armfuls of colorful decorations, some putting the finishing touches on a beautiful Peace Day tree that stood tall and proud in the center.  Others carried trays upon trays of food to set out on large tables.

A young princess with h/c hair and e/c eyes gazed out at the world, a dreamy look appeared on her face.  How beautiful Hyrule looked when it first snowed.  The sun catching the crystals of snow like gemstones from the mines of Death Mountain shimmered and sparkled like a thousand fairies dancing across the lands.  Seeing Castle Town all aglow with the citizens putting their lights up and how magical it looked when the sun went down left a sense of joy and wonder in her heart, especially during the Rhinoc Solstice.

Hyrule had entered into a new era of peace ever since the Twilight had been disspelled from the land and Y/N couldn't have been happier.

Colorful strings of lights shone in the distance, making the bustling streets of Castle Town look like one of those hand painted villages on display in the windows at some of the shops. She could smell the fresh baked goods from the bakers below, the tantalizing scent of chocolate chip cookies and pastries wafting through her nose, the sounds of children laughing and playing in the streets echoed in her mind as they reenacted the story of how the Hero of Twilight defeated Ganondorf and the Usurper King, Zant, some adding their own unique spin on the tale.

"Y/N!" a pleasant voice called from the top of the staircase, pulling her from her daydreams.  "Can you help me with my dress please?"

"Coming Zelda!" The princess held the sides of her champagne-colored dress and walked up the grand staircase back to her sister's room.

Zelda stood in her chambers wearing a beautiful, satin red dress with gold trim that looked similar to her purple and white one she usually wore. The golden shoulder armor with the sapphire and red jewels in it shimmered under the candlelight in her room as she put her small silver earrings with the red ribbon in. Her long, brown hair neatly swept back with a braid at the end as she held a couple pins in her mouth in an attempt to keep the matching diadem on her head.

"Y/N, can you get these laces in the back for me?" Zelda said, putting the two strands of her hair tied in white ribbons in front in an elegant manner.  No wonder people cheered the loudest every time she would make an appearance.  She was the epitome of grace, class and elegance and it radiated in everything she did, even the Peace Day parties.  One of the many reasons why Y/N looked up to her.

Y/N approached her sister and took a hold of the laces and gently laced up the back of her sister's dress.

"There. That should do it," Y/N said. Zelda smoothed the front of her dress and gave herself one last look in the mirror.

"I swear these Peace Day parties get bigger and bigger each year," Zelda replied, giving a twirl in her dress.

"I think it's because you do such a great job at planning all of them, Zel," Y/N said with a smile.

Zelda closed the small jewelry box that rested on her nightstand. "Well, it's not all me, Y/N.  You, our brother and everyone that works in the castle help to make this happen." Zelda gave her diadem one last adjustment.  "Speaking of, how are the preparations going?"

"So far so good," Y/N said.  "They're finishing up decorating downstairs and it looks wonderful!"

"Oh, good I'm glad," Zelda said, a sigh of relief escaped her lips.  "We have a lot of important people coming.  Has anyone shown up yet?"

Y/N shook her head.  "No.  Not yet. I haven't seen Fabian yet either."

Zelda put her dresses back into her wardrobe.  "He's probably running around the castle and causing mischief as usual."

"Typical of a 10-year-old boy," Y/N said with a chuckle.  She looked at herself in her sister's mirror, realizing she wasn't anywhere near being party ready.  "Zel, do you think you could help me pick an outfit for tonight? I don't know what to wear."

Zelda quickly went to the window to see if anyone had arrived yet.   "We've still got a little time before people start showing up. Let's see what you have."

The sisters walked down the carpeted hallway down to Y/N's chambers.  Several servants bowed to the princesses as they quickly shuffled along with large, silver basins for food.

"Princess Zelda!  Princess Y/N!" one said, looking like they had wrangled a herd of goats for several days, holding up a garland with lots of lights in it.  "Where should this go?  Almost every corner of the castle is covered in decorations."

"Put that one along the railings," Zelda replied.  "If you have another one, I suggest putting it on the mantle if you haven't already."

"Thank you, your highness!" The servant said, scurrying away and beaming from ear to ear.

The two princesses smiled and laughed until a young boy who had honey blonde hair and striking blue eyes similar to Zelda rounded the corner holding a wooden sword in his hands, nearly making the princesses trip. A floppy green, makeshift hat adorned his head, in stark contrast to his velvet green suit with golden epaulets and a red cape.

"Hiya!  Take that Ganondorf! I'm Link! I will save you, my sisters, for Hyrule!" the little boy cried, giving a rather dramatic performance filled with random sound effects coming from his mouth like he was acting out a dramatic scene in a play.

"Fabian!" Zelda called.  "How many times do I have to tell you, be careful about running around the castle!  You could break something!"

"But Zelda, Ganondorf could come back at any minute!" the little boy replied, holding up his makeshift sword in a rather protective fashion. He jabbed at the air like he was fencing against an imaginary foe. "I'll be ready for him!" He struck a heroic pose and swung his sword up and around his head, nearly dropping it on the floor and nearly tripping over his cape that was far too long for him.

Zelda sighed and shook her head.  "Have you finished getting ready for the party?  The guests will be here soon."

"Do I have to go to this stupid party?" Fabian said, rolling his eyes.  "It's bad enough I have to wear this itchy suit." The young prince reached up and scratched his neck.

"Fabian," Y/N said gently. "Your friends will be here before you know it."  She cast a playful grin at her younger brother.  "In the meantime--why don't you see if you can help the servants with the decorations.  I know how much you love putting up the tinsel! Maybe they'll give you a treat too!"

The little boy's eyes lit up with delight at the last word.  "A treat?!  For me?!"

"It smells like they're baking those Hyrulean sugar cookies you love so much!" Y/N said, a beaming grin spread across her beautiful face.

"They are?!" Fabian exclaimed excitedly as he pushed past his older sisters.  "Outta my way!"

"Careful Fabian you'll---"

CRASH!  WABAM! BANG!

"WHOA!!"

Zelda and Y/N flinched as silver trays spun on the carpeted floors like tops, some of the desserts rolling down the steps. Some of the servants cast annoyed or stern glances at the boy, one on their stomach, the other holding the silver tray up over their head like the sky was about to come crashing down at any second.

"Oops," he said, his cheeks turning bright red as he laughed nervously.  "Sorry."

Zelda held her face in her hands and shook her head as Y/N tried suppressing a laugh.

"Oh goddesses," Zelda sighed.

"Oh, come on, Zelda," Y/N said, hooking her arm through her sister's.  "He's just playing and being a little kid."

Zelda sighed as she pat her sister's hand.  "Right.  Enough of this dilly dallying. We have a party to finish getting ready for."

Notes:

When first reading through this story, my friend Dan asked me how Christmas would fit into the world of The Legend of Zelda as they worship several goddesses.

That got the wheels turning and I looked up to see if there were any holidays that were mentioned within the games. To my knowledge, there wasn't however I came across this page that had different Hyrulean Holidays and I wanted to see what the equivalent to Christmas was in Hyrule. If you'd like to see the other holidays, feel free to click on this link (no pun intended haha! here: https://heroes-of-hyrule.fandom.com/wiki/Hyrulean_Calendar)

As soon as I told him the idea, he thought it would be interesting to see how that worked. In my story, it's similar to Christmas as people decorate with lights and give gifts, however they share stories about Link and his heroics instead.

I also really enjoyed writing the exchange between the siblings. For Zelda and her sister, I drew inspiration from Elsa and Anna from Frozen with Zelda being a bit more on the reserved and calm side, whereas the younger sister has the more childlike wonder. Fabian I drew inspiration from a lot of different places: one of them being my brother when he was younger, King Agnarr when he was younger and slightly mixed in with Olaf.

Some things that have helped me in creating this story:

This was a question I asked myself when I was thinking about how I wanted to write this: What does Christmas feel like to me? Here's my answer: Christmas to me feels warm, cozy and magical. I had to dig deep within the recesses of my mind thinking back to my childhood and that sense of wonder I got whenever I'd see the lights and the snow or the cookies baking in the oven or the nights my dad and I would grab hot chocolate from Dunkin' Donuts as we shopped for Christmas presents.

As the story progresses, I will continue to add what else has helped me where appropriate!

Thank you for reading! Now onwards to chapter two!
