Part of This World

Summary:

North is from a world of magical girls, Soul Gems, and Witches. While she isn’t fighting the invisible forever war now that she is no longer on Earth, she has to adjust to a whole new world where magic is natural and commonplace. From culture shock to school to the inevitability of adulthood, North will never have a dull day in Twisted Wonderland.

In other words: The times North felt out of place in Twisted Wonderland, and the times she felt as if she had a place in Twisted Wonderland.

Chapter 1: Orientation

Summary:

All stories have a beginning.

Notes:

We gotta start this fic with the obligatory sorting ceremony/orientation! And after this chapter is the first day of school!

The fic title was originally Perpetual Foreigner but the definition doesn't fully match up with North's experiences here so now it's Little Mermaid song reference

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

She is not from Twisted Wonderland.

She is a magical girl in a world of mages, an outsider pretending to be one of them.

This is not her home. And she doesn’t expect to find a place where she belongs anytime soon.

When she wakes up, she detects magic. It’s not the magic belonging to a Witch, Familiar, or another magical girl, just some other kind of magic. That certainly explains the floating coffins. But why are there coffins in the first place?

The outfit is weird. Robes with a hood? Where are her clothes? What is this? A cult?

She exits the room. She walks down the dark halls, descends staircases. She doesn’t know how long it took for her to make it to the main entrance, but that doesn’t matter because she made it.

It’s night. That isn’t good for starting out in survival mode but fuck it, she’s going. So she goes down the very long flight of stairs and the main path. She is not joining a cult.

She walks past the statues hidden by the cover of night- not that she would stop to gawk at them, she has other priorities at this time.

She runs into someone. Plan ruined. And now the guy is talking to her!

His outfit seems cool and all but- No, she isn’t lost. She is leaving , not that she’d say anything- What do he mean ‘she’s a student’? This is a school?! Then what’s with the cult robes?!

And so the guy drags her all the way back to the building to that one room, just in time for the Sorting Ceremony to start!

“State thy name.”

“North.” Is that her name? No, it isn’t. It's an alias, but she may as well pretend that it's her name.

“The shape of thy soul is… Ignihyde!”

So, she’s a student. She didn’t pick up what that dapper guy in burgundy meant earlier but now there’s some confirmation that she isn’t being recruited into a cult? If it really is a cult, there’s always the option of sneaking out and leaving permanently before she’s in too deep.

The rest of the sorting takes a while and seems to end after the last student gets sorted- only for a late arrival to come in. Said late arrival gets outed as not having magic abilities, and a fire-cat-thing sets the place on fire trying to show off. Sure, she could put out the fires if she wanted but that’s too much effort. Don’t worry about the fires- that’s the staff’s problem, not hers. It’s only after the arsonist gets caught that everyone can leave.

The floating tablet and android herd her and fellow dormmates through a dim cavern lined with giant skeletons to a building with a bright geometric interior.

She gets a dorm room like any other student. No other person comes in, which means it’s just her in a room for four. How sad. Actually, she’s fine with it. It’s better this way. A room to herself means no roommates to put up with!

She should shower. She needs it. Maybe that will help. So she takes off the robes and finds a gem attached to her chest, just over the heart. A heart-shaped gem right over the heart. It’s soft blue with a round cut and a gold (or is that brass? Probably brass but let’s go with gold-) frame around it. So that’s where her Soul Gem went. At least she can’t lose it if it’s stuck like that?

In the mirror? That’s her, who else? She is 5’3”, short but not that short. She has short black hair, the bangs almost reaching her eyebrows. Her eyes are brown- they’re supposed to be brown. Her right eye is still brown while the left one is blue like her Soul Gem.

Soul Gem…?

One more time.

Let’s call her North for now- She is… How old is she? For starters, her birthday is January 1st. Where was she before getting admitted into a school and not a cult? Some place with snow at night. So it must be winter. She’s… thirteen? Thirteen, fourteen, whatever. She’ll go with fourteen once her birthday rolls around. There’s no point overthinking it.

She is from Earth. That’s the planet she is from. She knows what country and city she lives in. Her family is from Hong Kong. They are Asian. They are immigrants.

She has short black hair, practical and easy to take care of. Her left eye is blue for some reason but her right eye is still brown. She was born with brown eyes! How did one change color- it doesn’t make sense!

Oh yeah, one more thing. She is a magical girl. That’s why she has the blue gem, her Soul Gem- not usually on her chest though, that’s supposed to happen in magical girl form. She has to protect that gem with her life. As a magical girl, her duty is to fight Witches. But there are no Witches here.

Right now? She is a student at Night Raven College. She is a freshman. She is in Ignihyde which is founded on the Lord of the Underworld’s ceaseless diligence. That is her current place in this world.

Notes:

I forgot to mention this when uploading: North's character is influenced by Elsa from Frozen, Kai in The Snow Queen, and maybe Mulan to some extent.
