Work Text:
Captain America is the greatest hero this worlds ever seen
That’s….at least what the history books said
James never understood it
He was a man
A man with a shield
He had no powers, Nothing Special about him, He was just merely a man, a man with a shield
Yet HE was the one that led a team full of superpowered beings. A god, A monster, a Billionaire in a high tech suit, a Man who could change his size a woman who could warp reality. Out of everyone on the Avengers, HIS FATHER was the one who led them all
His father
A man with nothing more……but a shield
“Mommy” a Young James asked as Natasha had tucked him into bed
Her mission suit was on, The black Widow leather was something he was all too familiar with. She practically blended into the darkness of his room and if it wasn’t for his nightlight in the corner of his room and her matching blood red hair he wouldn’t even know she was there
They were about to go on a mission, a sudden distress call. Again something he’s used too. But she still had time to tuck her little escape artist to bed
“Yeah baby” she cooed a warm smile on her face as she moved a strand of hair out his face
James had been hesitant to ask his question, fearful of what her response would be or even how she would react but his little mind was too complicated and it needed answers
“What makes Daddy so special ?” he asked actually shocking Natasha
“Wha….what do you mean ?”
The young James only licked his lips before speaking once more
“I mean…..He’s not like Uncle Thor, He can’t fly…..He’s not super strong like Uncle Bruce, He can’t grow big like Uncle Pym or Do magic, He’s not even King of an entire Kingdom like Azari’s Dad !” James exclaimed looking at the Captain America poster in his room in thought
“So what makes him so important that he leads the Avengers ?”
Truthfully Natasha didn’t respond. Not because she was speechless. But because this miracle of a child, A child that shouldn’t have even been born questioned what made his father, the greatest man this world’s ever seen. So Special
“Baby” Natasha said sitting down on his bed so that she could look at her son closely
“Your Father” she began taking his little arms
“Is the greatest man I’ve ever known” Natasha admitted only leaving James confused
“What makes him so Special, is the fact that he doesn't have any superpowers. He’s fearless, He’s righteous, He’s beyond Brave, a mortal man like himself Stands tall against Gods, Gods that can destroy him without a thought but even then he never gives up, never backs down. He’s always the last one standing when everyone is down and he brings hope to everyone even in the darkest moment”
James still failed to see what made his father so special
All he was, was a man
A man with a shield ?
“But he’s still just a man” James argued
“A man with a shield ?”
Natasha had just chuckled, placing a soft kiss on her forehead leaving James to soon lay down in bed
“You’ll understand when your older” she told him leaving James to sit alone within his room and just think
What made his Father so Special ?
17 years later, After Ultron had been defeated, the world was back on track. New Heroes had been discovered and just like before where the age of Heroes Vs Villains was thought to be dead there were bad guys who plagued the world trying to pick up where Ultron left off
And there were good guys like James and his team to stop them and keep the peace
17 years Later the 19 year old James carried his own Shield, The same one his Father held into battle, The same one he died with and Ultron had in his Trophy case of Fallen heroes
17 years later James held the title of Captain America. 17 years later he led his own Avengers, An Archer, A Goddess, A Prince, A walking Pym Particle.
17 years later James looked up at the giant Captain America statue in the middle of Central park in Neo New York
His Father held an American Flag with a smile while the tombstone read
STEVEN GRANT ROGERS
CAPTAIN AMERICA
THE GREATEST HERO THE WORLD’S EVER KNOWN
People all over the city praised heroes but everyone, EVERYONE loved Captain America. On the fourth of july to honor his father’s birthday Time Square holds a memorial to him and lights red white and blue fireworks while people dress up and lay pictures
James had only watched the sight from the Helicarrier. His arms folded with a scowl on his face as the red white and blue fireworks brightened the night sky and the color reflected off of him
Torunn, Azari, Pym, Especially Francis go on and on about how great his Dad is and try not to stress that he had big shoes to fill in
Torunn worries that James pressures himself too much. That his Father’s legacy was something near impossible to amount up to and that he shouldn’t try to be Steve Rogers. He’s just fine being James Rogers
“Don’t worry Rogers” Francis said patting James on his shoulder with a chuckle as he observed the fireworks with him in honor of his deceased Father
“Your Dad would be proud of you man” he reassured
Francis was just trying to be nice, speak words to him that didn’t leave himself second guessing all the work he’s done not just leading the team but helping the world rebuild. Finding out more Children of Fallen heroes were alive and watching as they discovered more of them out there
Some good like the new Female Devil in hell’s Kitchen
The Red Haired Spider Swinging around Manhattan
The Witch in a purple cloak occupying the Sanctum Sanctorum
The god level threat at the Baxter building that missed his family more than anyone
The Female Vampire that hunted at night killing other Vampires that dared to test her
Along with the Mutants that occupied the newly built X-Mansion. Another group of kids trying to rebuild their parents legacy
Some were bad
Like the Suit wearing prick that’s kicked his ass with the 10 rings in China
His own half brother out there….somewhere
The sister of the same person alone in the Baxter building right now. Trying to uphold the legacy of another Villain that plagued his father’s past as she wore all green and controlled all of Latveria
What made him so Special ?
If his Father really was some high and mighty man, A mortal man that even Odin himself respected, what made James so worthy to pick up the shield ?
Because he was his son ?
What was it his duty to do so or something ? just because he had his DNA ? the same Serum running through his blood that made his Father what he was he was obligated to Yell “AVENGERS ! ASSEMBLE !” before they fought ?
Being thrown into a nearby building James had painfully groaned
His vision blurry due to the damage
They were in a fight, in the middle of downtown
One of their newest foes decided to chaos mayhem in the streets, A gama monster who called himself Atrocity he was basically the new Abomination
Shaking his head as he picked himself up. James saw through the destroyed entrance of the building he was thrown through his team fighting the monster
Francis continued to flip off cars and dodged the Villain’s attacks. Shooting different trick arrows to slow him down
Pym zipped all around the sky shooting the Monster with plasma blast while Azara threw different elements at him trying to knock him off balance before shooting him with a bolt of lighting
Torunn Immediately flew in punching the monster cursing him to crash to the ground and James had only watched feeling useless
No matter what he did he couldn’t seem to hurt the villain but here was his team. Handling him just fine without him
What made him so special ?
Picking himself up letting out a roar Atrocity had Immediately picked up a car and threw it at Torunn
The girl Quickly grabbed her sword splitting it in two and while one of the debris fell on the ground the other half of the car shot towards a nearby civilian
James’s eyes Immediately went and he reacted on nothing but instinct
Grabbing his shield James ran as fast as he could, racing with all his might so that he could leap and block the car protecting the Civilian with his shield
The Woman had Immediately coward in fear, clutching at him cryingly as her life had flashed before her eyes
The moment took a while, more than a while a long time as James even needed to let out a series of breaths just holding his shield up still blocking like something was there
It hadn’t registered to him or her that James just saved her until a nearby civilian shouted
“IT’S CAPTAIN AMERICA ! ” they said leaving the applause to Immediately follow
Claps and cheers were given to James shocking him completely while the police broke through the barricade and grabbed the woman bringing her to safety
“Give em hell Captain America” the police officer had said and the world just left James’s heart to drop
This is what made his father so special
This was why people believed in him
It wasn’t because he couldn’t fly or run at blazing speeds, breathe underwater or shoot lasers out his eyes.
The reason people Looked up to Captain America was because he looked after them, He fought for what was right and he never backed down in the face of danger
The nearby jumbotrons had lit up and all James saw was his face. And Below him said
CAPTAIN AMERICA
THE PEOPLE’S HERO
Atrocity let out a roar getting James’s attention
Immediately James saw his team scattered upon the ground beaten as he was the last one standing, he was all that was left
But even then the civilians cheered and cried his name
They believed in him…..
He gave them hope that all this would be ok
“You ready to go hero” Atrocity growled and James had only looked down at his shield and licked his lips in thought of his question
He was just a man
A man with a shield
He couldn’t fly, wasn’t super strong, couldn’t change his size or shoot plasma beams, he couldn’t control water or fire or earth, air and lighting
All he had was a shield
Tightening the shield buckle around his arm James held a look of determination watching Atrocity let out raging roar before sprinting to him
He didn’t back down
He didn’t run away
He stood strong and tall before charging towards him as well
Because he was Captain America
The greatest hero this world’s ever seen
