“Nanako! I’m home!”
“Big Bro!”
Yu feels his chest get tacked as soon as he walks through the door by his sister. Well… cousin, but sister in his heart. He’s gone ‘home’ for Golden Week (this might as well just be his home), and he’s had a pretty solid past couple of days. He’s had family time with Doujima and Nanako at the lake, he saw Yosuke get a girlfriend with Labrys (and held back the urge to tell her about his nurse fetish), and today, it was all about playing with Nanako. Doujima would be working a bit overtime tonight to try and smooth over the Adachi situation, so it was just going to be the two of them.
“I’ve gotten the groceries from Junes.” Yu says, putting the bags on the counter and patting her on the head. “Sorry I couldn’t bring you this time. Got some omelet and rice with soy, though.”
“Yay!” She cheered. She’d gotten a bit larger sense the last time he saw her, but she was still small and adorable, if not just a bit more hyper than the last time he saw her. Which Yu hoped to the good gods (like Marie) meant that she would stay this way. Because the gods help whoever tries to break her spirit. She runs over to the counter and starts to get all the ingredients out of the bag, storing them properly and getting out some of the cooking ingredients and bowls. “Can I beat the eggs this time?”
“Sure.” Yu says, taking one of the pans that she got out and moving it to the stove. “I’ll start stir-frying the chicken and onions.”
They immediately started to get into a rhythm, with Nanako getting on a step stool to start beating the eggs in the bowl, and Yu putting the oil on the pan to stir fry them. Before either could get too far though, they heard a knock on the door.
“Nanako, could you…”
“Yep!” Nanako leaned over on the stool to look out the window and see who knocked. Her eyes immediately lit up when she saw who it was. “Ooo, I think you’ll like who’s come to visit, big bro!” She jumps off the stool and runs to the door, throwing it open. “Your girlfriend is here!”
Yu turned his head around to see Chie walk through the door. Knowing what was coming, he dropped his spatula and got away from the stove, just in time for Chie to try and tackle him in a hug. He countered by grabbing her, putting an arm under her butt, pushing her up, and giving her a kiss.
“Hey Chie.” Yu smiles, putting her back down and giving a stunned Chie a pat on the head. “What’s my spunky dragon doing here?”
“…I don’t think you ever countered my jumping hug like that.” Chie laughs. “But I was wondering if you wanted to go out with me for a bit? Although with all this…” She gestures to all of the cooking supplies out.
“I’m sorry, Doujima’s out and I need to get Nanako dinner. But-“
“Can Chie-chan stay over?” Nanako quickly asks. “I like seeing you guys together. And Chie-chan can eat with us too!”
“That sounds great.” Yu smiles, looking over at Chie. “Any objections?”
“Nope! I’d love to have dinner with you guys!”
Chie pumps her fists, walking over to the stove. “Ooo, omelets? It’s just like our cooking competition! Except I’ve improved a lot since then. This should be easy!”
“…right.” Yu suddenly has second thoughts, especially because Chie had just tried to give Yu some homemade food 2 days ago for his welcome back. Now, Yu was able to hold back throwing up. The multi hour long stomach ache after the fact wasn’t something that could be healed back, and wasn’t something he wanted Nanako to get. How does he pivot this… “How about you look over Nanako beating the eggs? Just let me handle the rest.”
“Got it!” Luckily Chie is none the wiser. She walks over to Nanako and stands over her, watching her beat the eggs. “Wow, you’re a good cook, Nanako-chan!”
“Thanks!” Nanako smiles up at her.
“Do you need a stool to see the stove, Chie?” Yu teases.
“Shut up!”
Chie and Nanako finish beating the eggs pretty quickly, and they both go sit down at the table while they wait for Yu to finish making the omelet. He still needs to cool it and wrap it, so while he does that he keeps an ear out to listen to both of them talk. He heard the TV turn on behind him and heard Marie start talking about the weather. Nanako turns to Chie and tilts her head.
“Didn’t Marie-chan also like big bro?” Nanako asks.
“Oh, yeah.” Chie nods, crossing her arms. “A lot of people liked Yu. That’s because he’s so perfect.” She grins. “But don’t worry. I fought them all off and won over his heart. Like… hi yah!” Chie punches the air in front of her, then starts doing all the karate moves she mimics from the moves she watches. “And then your big bro just had to fall in love with me!”
“I didn’t know you were so strong.” Nanako laughs. “Big bro, did she really fight off everyone that confessed to you?”
“That’s not how I remember it…” Yu smiles as he begins to fold the omelets. “I remember that I was the one that confessed to Chie alone in an alleyway. And we all had to fight off Marie, not just us two.” For a separate reason, but it still counted.
“I fought off people in the alleyway!” Chie counters, blushing. “You’re right about Marie though. But I could totally beat you in a fight. So I can fight off everyone else.”
“I don’t know about that, honey.” Yu grins. “You’ve got some pretty big weaknesses.”
“She does?” Nanako asks, looking at Chie confused. “But you’re so strong. What weaknesses do you have with fighting?”
“No I don’t!” Chie pouts, her blush growing. “Your big bro is just lying.”
“Oh really?” Yu says, finishing folding the 3 omelets. “I’ll show you her weakness later, Nanako. Let’s just eat for now.”
Yu brings over the omelets and puts them all in place. After waiting for them to cool, they start to dig in. Yu sees both Nanako and Chie’s eyes light up as they dig into the food and knows that he did a great job.
“This is so good!” Nanako cheers as she finishes her omelet pretty quickly. “It’s even better than the one you made for the contest.”
“Mmm…” Chie looks over to Yu and grins with the food still in her mouth. “You better keep cooking like this when we move in together!”
“You guys are moving in together?” Nanako gasps, looking between the two of them. “I thought you needed to be married to do that! Did you get married without telling dad??”
“Of course not!” Chie says. “Well, not yet… but two people in a relationship move in together all the time. We were thinking about going to Tokyo, him becoming a detective and me being a police officer.”
“Oh, just like dad.” Nanako nods. “You’ll be a great detective, big bro.” She smiles. “And Chie can beat up all the bad guys really easily. So she’d be a great police officer.”
“Yeah!” Chie wraps her arm around Yu’s neck. “He’s going to find all the bad guys, and I’m going to kick their as- butts.” Chie changes her wording when Yu gives her a deadly look.
“Don’t worry, we’ll come by to see you Nanako.” Yu promises. “I’ll give you all sorts of presents from the big city.”
“Really?” Nanako says, her eyes lighting up even more. “Yay! You guys are like… like…” she moves over to the TV and switches between channels before finding what she’s looking for. It’s some romantic comedy anime with a female police officer and a male detective. Naoto sits on the couch and points at them. “You’re like them! But you’re together, instead of just teasing each other about it and not getting together.”
“Ooo, I’ve never watched that before.” Chie gets up from the table and drags Yu over to the couch. “Let’s see this. Maybe it will give an idea for what to do in the city.”
They all immediately go into a silence as they watch the anime. Chie takes a seat on Yu’s lap, and Nanako leans up against his side. They get pretty engrossed in the anime. When the episode ends and an ad breaks, Nanako looks up at Yu.
“See? You guys can be like that.” Nanako says
“I can see it.” Yu says. “Chie would need to grow a few inches to match her height though.”
“Yu, I swear…” Chie warns, giving him a few playful punches on the shoulder. “We go outside and you are absolutely getting rocked.”
“I’m sure.” Yu says, unphased. “But because you can’t do it here, I guess I’ll have to get my teasing in now. Speaking of which… Hey, Nanako…” a grin comes back to his face as he wraps his arms very tight around Chie’s waist to prevent her from escaping. “Do you want to see Chie’s weakness?”
“Ooo, yeah!” Nanako lifts her head off of Will’s body and looks at both of them. “What is it?”
“Yu, I swear…” Chie tries to threaten, but it’s immediately cut off by a gasp as Yu gently runs his hand across her stomach. “Yu… don’t…”
“She’s really ticklish.” Yu announces, his grin growing wider. “She was play fighting with me one time and got me pinned, and I did this out of desperation… and it turns out if I just…” Yu keeps one hand on her stomach and moves another to her shoulder, then slowly, gently, starts to tickle her.
“YU!” Chie starts to laugh as Yu’s hands work her body into laughter. “Y-you… I can’t breath.. I give up! I surrender!” Chie tries to throw up her arms after only a few seconds, but Yu keeps them pinned to her side until she falls on the ground laughing. Yu tickles her just a bit more for good measure, then looks up at Nanako, who was watching the whole situation with an amused grin on her face.
“Oh, Chie-chan does have a weakness!” Nanako says, leaning over and tickling her shoulder. “Now I can beat Chie-chan in a fight as well!”
“N-Now you’ve got your cousin on it…” Chie pants, completely out of breath after just a short time. “I need… to breathe…” She slowly raises herself up and pouts at Yu. “Now I’m all sweaty… I thought you said you wouldn’t do that in public.”
“I’m sorry, honey.” Yu leans forward and gives Chie a kiss on the forehead. “But I had to prove that I’d win in a fight to my sister. And Nanako can keep a secret, right?” He looks over at Nanako, who smiles and nods.
“I will! But she still looks upset, big bro. Maybe you can give her a hug?” Nanako suggests.
“Yeah, babe, I do still look upset.” Chie tries to say with judgement, but her voice tells Yu that she wasn’t that mad. “Maybe some nice love and affection from her dear boyfriend would soothe the aching wound…”
“Alright, alright…” Yu puts Chie back in his lap and gave her more kisses all over her face, then puts one arm on her head and another around her stomach. “I’m sorry for being so mean and evil, honey. I won’t do that again in public.”
“Hmm… I guess I accept.” Chie sighs, leaning into Yu’s body and his touch. “But you’ll need to cuddle me a lot more for me to forgive you fully. I heard that ‘in public’, by the way.”
“Well, I can’t lie in front of Nanako.” He grins. “Because you can bet I’m doing this again later.”
“Hehe… you guys are like the couple on TV.” Nanako laughs, sitting back down next to them and leaning against Yu. “Let’s watch some more anime while you give Chie her apology!”
And so, they did. They watched the weather again, they watched some Jojo: Battle Tendency that just came out (where both Chie and Nanako tried their own ‘Your next line is’, to little success), and eventually ended up on some game show they all liked. After some more of watching the show, Yu felt Nanako’s breathing slow down next to him. When he looked over, he noticed her eyes closed, and her using his arm as a pillow. He poked Chie and gestured over to her with his head.
“Look.” Yu whispered. Chie whipped her head over and smiles.
“Aw… that’s so cute.” Chie smiles. “She must be so tired because her big bro made her so excited, huh?”
“I hope so. Look at that grin.”
“Hehe. You made her the happiest little sister in the world.”
“I’m glad.” Yu moves one arm over to Nanako and wraps it around her. “Chie… do you think that’s what it will be like when we have kids?”
“I hope so. I want them to be as energetic as Nanako. You better not tell them about the tickling though.”
“Don’t you worry, they’ll know all about where to attack mom after a long day of work.”
“Well… I guess I wouldn’t mind that.” She moves up and grabs a blanket from the side of the couch, then wraps a blanket around all of them. “And we can fall asleep like this at the end of every day.”
“That would be great.” Yu says as Chie goes back into his arms. He pats her on the head and lays back. “I’m… really tired… so we can start that experiment now…”
“That’s sounds great…” Chie yawns. “Night, babe.”
“Night, honey.”
Doujima arrives at his house way later than he thought. Those detectives keep running around the facts of the case… at this rate, Adachi might as well just live at the holding cell.
He puts his coat on the coat rack and closes the door. At least he wasn’t worried about Nanako. Yu definitely took care of her. But when he went and peaked into Nanako’s room, he noticed that she wasn’t there. And Yu wasn’t in his room either. Confused, he decided to look around the house, and found out exactly where they were.
On the couch, Yu had fallen asleep sitting up, smiling even as he’s sleeping. Right on his side, he could see Nanako wrapped up in a cozy blanket, hugging Yu’s arm and mumbling in her sleep, also with a smile on her face. And he could just barely see Chie’s head peak up from the blanket, her face very content.
Doujima felt his dad instincts kick in, and he walked to the front of them. Making sure his flash was off (which Yu had taught him how to do just yesterday), he took a picture of them all sleeping together. He knew that Yu would love it and Nanako would probably be mixed about Doujima teasing her about it, which is exactly what he wanted.
He didn’t want to wake them up though. He decided to send a text to Chie’s parents about what happened, who immediately responded despite how late it was and said it was okay (this sort of thing has happened before). He puts an extra layer of blankets on them, then makes sure all the doors are locked.
“Goodnight.” Doujima whispered, shutting off the lights. He took one last look at all of them before going to his own room. He knew that Yu would make a great dad one day.
